What’s New for 2011

The days are getting longer and the water is getting

warmer. Summertime is fast approaching and the 2011

VBBFC events calendar is set. As the club grows and

evolves, our events follow suit, and this year is no

exception. We have welcomed Rodney Bowles and

Joe Desormeaux to the board recently and have gained

from having their fresh outlook on our usual issues.

The annual membership meeting is being held at the

Knights of Columbus Hall this year to ensure that we

have plenty of room to do as we please. Our speaker

is coming straight from the VMRC to speak primarily

about the Striped Bass regulations we have come to

know. He is informed and ready to speak on many

other topics as well so please email your questions to

Karen Feller beforehand to ensure the speaker is

prepared. This has been a great event in the past, so

plan on attending and bring potential new members

who you would like to introduce to the club.

Get your tickets early for the “Inlet Escape Cruise” in

May, as we expect to sell out well in advance.

Proceeds from this and the Fall Oyster Roast, benefit

HOF-NOD. Don‟t let sea-sickness keep you at the

dock this year! If it‟s rough outside, we‟ll stick to the

Website Gets Facelift!

The official club website has been Joan Rivers-ized!

The new site is up and running thanks to Tony

Spangler of www.vbsf.net and our board members.

The new site, www.vbbfc.org , will be your source for

upcoming events, membership information, and all

Club news.

A few things that we‟ve added include a photo page,

where you can upload photos of your catch. You‟ll

also be able to check weather, enter Fishing Frenzy

catches, and soon be able to shop our Club‟s Ships

Store which will be full of logo apparel.

The VBBFC is really excited about the new site and

want to thank all involved in the new page, including

Capt. Dave Wessner and once again tony Spangler.

So get out there and catch „em up!!!

inlet where it is nice and calm.

We are always looking for volunteers, so please

contact a board member if you are interested in getting

involved with the club and events. With jobs ranging

from writing for the newsletter to filling your bra with

$20‟s, we can find a way for you to put your particular

skills to work. Our brand new, built from scratch

website is up and running so be sure to give it a look.

Fishing Frenzy entries will be made on the new site

this year and they must be entered within 30 days of

the catch. This contest can involve the whole family,

so check out the website for the full rules and

tournament categories. Be sure to update your

membership information with Judy Wilder if you have

had a change of address, boat, or spouse.

2011 is looking like another great year for the club.

Please don‟t hesitate to contact me if you have any

ideas or suggestions for the future. As we grow, the

club continues to change but let‟s not lose sight of

what has brought us all together. When introducing

potential new members to the VBBFC, find people like

us that have an enthusiasm for fishing the blue and

green waters off Virginia Beach. That is what this

club was founded upon and why it has grown to where

it is today.

President of the VBBFC

Vela, Vela, Vela!!

To shake the cold and blues of the Virginia Beach

winter, Bill Gooch organized a trip to Guatemala. The

10 players included four members of the

VBBFC…Bill, Bob Stephens, Robert Bosley and

Allen Palmer. Casa Vieja Lodge would play host to

the cast as they readied to fish on center stage the rich

waters off Guatemala.

Bob Stephens sent me an email with the complete

story. Here‟s Bob‟s side of things…

” We fished three days out of Casa Vieja Lodge and

the club group fished an extra day out of sailfish Oasis.

The first day of fishing for the group was slow. The

sailfish were not aggressive and would rise to the

teaser only to drop out of sight. The fish that did hit

were biting short and that‟s tough with circle hooks.

“The next two day the fishing turned insane (could be

the full moon turned them on), all three boats boated

over 20 sails. The last day was absolutely sick. Allen,

Robert and I teamed up fishing on the "Circle Hook"

(ex Chaos, ex Waterman) with Captain Eddie and will

probably never have another day like that one. We

raised 77 sailfish, hooked 69 and released 50 along

with several dolphin to 40 pounds. The mates were so

busy rigging additional baits that we not only were

catching the fish but running the cockpit as well.

Numerous double and triple headers caused some cut

offs and Allen "zing-pow" Palmer managed a couple

nice bird nest. The over runs were not really his fault,

the Shimano reels had a tendency to have the drag

adjustment knobs work loose and go into free spool.

That's Allen's story and he is sticking to it. continued on page 4

“Robert was kind enough to take a break from

sailfishing and caught a nice dolphin which was turned

into lunch; however we did not have time to eat. The

group spent the last day of the trip in the ancient city

of Antigua nestled in the mountains among the

volcanoes. What a beautiful place and so much history

and sights to see. Needless to say it was a great trip,

fabulous fishing, great food and good friends. If you

want to travel to a simply fantastic fishing destination,

put Guatemala on your bucket list.”

Bob…it‟s number 4 on my Bucket List!!!
