Henricus Historical Park, located in the Dutch Gap Nature Preserve near Richmond, Virginia re-creates the second successful English colony in America. It brings to life what it would have been like in Virginia 400 years ago with period-dressed English and Indian Interpreters living, working and interacting near each other on the historic James River.

Currently, the Park houses 14 colonial buildings and Powhatan Indian structures and numerous sub structures in this fully functioning site. Tours and school programs are provided for grades Pre-K - 12 to show cultural interactions and to introduce the evolution of economic and social revolutions in early America.

STEM Education and Project-Based-Learning are EXPANDING at Old Henricus! How does a history museum provide ways to teach STEM education? By tracking science and technology advances over time and by seeing how these affect cultural, economic and governmental changes. The Age of Exploration and colonization became possible in the 17th century through new or improved inventions in navigational tools and weather knowledge and through enhanced firearms and medical tools. Join us for our new middle school programs: 17th Century Sciences, Math & Mapping the James River and Colonial Cultures of the James River. All elementary level programs – Voyage to Virginia, People of the River: Powhatan Indians and Success of the Citie: Henricus -- compare and contrast Indian and English technology through the trading of ideas and materials.

Project-Based Learning allows students to delve more deeply into controversial topics, ask questions, problem solve and then create a project to share with others. Henricus Historical Park offers training sessions for students and teachers on how to use our programs and primary sources and to create these projects.

Frontier Culture MuseumThe Frontier Culture Museum tells the story of the thousands of people who migrated to colonial America, and of the life they created here for themselves and their descendants. These first pioneers came to America during the 1600s and 1700s from communities in the hinterlands of England, Germany, Ireland, and West Africa. Many were farmers and rural craftsmen set in motion by changing conditions in their homelands, and drawn to the American colonies by opportunities for a better life. Others came as unwilling captives to work on farms and plantations. Regardless of how they arrived, all became Americans, and all contributed to the success of the colonies, and of the United States.www.frontiermuseum.org

Predict the weather with coffee, tea or

cocoa!

Here’s a way to determine basic barometric pressure using a hot cup of coffee, tea, or cocoa. When you

pour the coffee into the cup watch the bubbles - if they move to the edge of the cup quickly, expect clear skies for the next 12 hours; if they hang out in the center expect rain in the next 12 hours and, if the bubbles move slowly to the edge, you may get a bit of weather, but it will clear soon.

Virginia State Parks - The American Civil War in Virginia

Virginia has some of the most expensive land in the United States — it was purchased with the blood and lives of Americans during the four years of the Civil War. Virginia saw more battles than any other state and paid a steep price, both on the field of battle and on the home front.

Over the next year and a half, as the nation commemorates the sesquicentennial of the end of the Civil War and the liberation of 3.9 million enslaved Americans, Virginia State Parks are a natural choice to learn about Virginia’s role in the war and the impact of the war on Virginia.

While Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park, High Bridge Trail State Park, Staunton River Battlefield State Park, Leesylvania State Park and Sky Meadows State Park each saw battles, engagements or encampments, there is a broader story of the lives of Virginia’s women, men and children, both free and enslaved, during the four years of the war.

It’s a story of survival, freedom and endurance; of changing lives and changing roles; of overcoming adversity; of dreams realized and hearts broken. These stories are written across the landscape of Virginia and in every community. These stories and more are being told in every state park through programs, encampments and activities now through 2015.

For a list of upcoming state park activities, visit: www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/civil-war-150.shtml.

To convert cricket chirps to degrees Fahrenheit, count number of chirps in 14 seconds then add 40 to get temperature.

Example: 30 chirps + 40 = 70° F

To convert cricket chirps to degrees Celsius, count number of chirps in 25 seconds, divide by 3, then add 4 to get temperature.

Example: 48 chirps /(divided by) 3 + 4 = 20° C

On the Old Farmer’s Almanac website you can hear a cricket chirp change speed depending on the temperature you choose. Listen here: http://www.almanac4kids.com/outdoors/index.php.

Learn how to tell the temperature by counting the chirps of a cricket!
