1.Design Phase

Principle To increase effectiveness with designing better workp

laces by integrating verbal and behavioral feedbacks from nurses.

Evidence 28.9% of nursing staff time was spent walking (Burgio

et al. 1990) the impact of unit layout on the amount of time spent

walking (Shepley 2002; Shepley and Davies 2003; Sturdavant 1960;)

Solution Nurses are randomly assigned to different units. They are asked to explore the unit and perform several medical tasks. The distances and time used, and their verbal feedbacks are collected.

Principle Maximize way-finding transition. Improve process efficiencies and reduce errors.

2. Build Phase

Solution Nurses will be trained to perform medical tasks with the

optimized routes before they move into new building. Different nurses may have different tasks/ destinations.

A nurse in ICU will be trained to locate key locations of

•Medication room

•Support room

•Equipments

•Certain people etc.

3. Occupancy Phase

Principle Provide transparency of the environment to patients and

visitors. Solution Users can use the virtual environment to know how to

find key locations in the hospital. Destination: ED
