Journal- Week1

With this week lecture given by Paul Poh, we were introduced to the virtual representation of patterns in nature, helping us to see the world in a different way. We also learned that there are rules for every pattern in nature. We focused on analytical, an abstract style of drawing. At first glance, the drawings might seem to be a set of random lines and shapes, but in fact they are the basic elements broken down from the original image. The purpose of this is to help us see clearly the relationship and connection between each part of the object.According to Kadinsky, there are three stages to the approach of the analytical drawing:1st stage: break down the object into its geometrical shapes.2nd stage(also called the “development of the structural network): develop a network by first identify and emphasize the principle tension of the object3rd stage(also called the “translation stage): simplify the structure further, using only lines. After completing these three stages, the drawings become unrecognisable, only the connection between each part of the object remain clear.I’ve attempted to adopt these three stages to create my analytical drawings. I broke down my pattern into layers of different sizes squares (its geometrical shapes). As squares are symmetrical shapes, my drawing also possesses this characteristic. To create a balance analytical drawing, I used the same method as the symmetrical drawing. As there are more squares towards the centre point of the drawing, I’ve decided to increase the thickness of the squares as they get bigger. That way, the drawing won’t seem to be too concentrated in the middle. To create movement within my drawing, I’ve created a network using dots (vertices of the leaves) and connect them using lines. Like the second drawing, I increase the thickness of the lines as they stretch out. However, unlike the second drawing, I did so to emphasize the focal point, giving the perception that the lines are twirling towards the centre,.My analytical drawings can be found on the next few pages.
