DIY Mortarboard It isn’t graduations without wearing a mortarboard. Make your own ‘Grad Hat’ and add your ANU flair with some of our printable decorations. And then celebrate, till it’s ‘Hats off’!

You will need: > Access to a printer > Scissors > A ruler > A pencil > Cardboard or foam board > Hot glue gun or strong glue > Decorations of your choice > Embroidery floss or pre-made tassel

How to make the DIY Mortarboard

1. See pg 5 for the printable mortarboard. Print onto an A3 card or just use the measurements as mentioned to draw out directly onto a cardboard or foam board. Cut out the cap section.

2. Next step is to attach the tassel (see across for tassel instructions). Punch a hole in the centre of the cap (use a sharp pencil or safely use a nail/screw to push through) and thread the tassel ‘tail’ through until it hangs at the desired length. Attach the thread to the reverse of the cap with glue, and cover with one of the tassel buttons in the template.

3. Use the remaining tassel button to cover the thread on the top side.

4. With the tassel attached, now is the time to decorate. You can use your own creative flair or the decorations provided in this pack; whatever you create, we can’t wait to see it!

5. The head band (pg 6) of the mortarboard is in two sections. Glue the two pieces together on one end, find the perfect fit for your head, and then glue the remaining open ends of the band together.

6. With the cap section lying flat on a table (with the back or un-decorated side facing up), fold and glue the dark grey tabs at the top of the head band, and gently place on to the back of the cap, pressing down on the glued tabs. Let this sit for as long as glue takes to dry.

7. Once the glue is dry, your very own DIY mortarboard is complete.

How to make the tassel

1. There are a couple of things you can do for the mortarboard tassel. You can easily buy one pre-made from a local fabric store (Lincraft, Spotlight or Hobbey Sew in Australia all stock tassels in a variety of colours) and buy matching embroidery floss to make the ‘tail’ (that attaches the tassel to the cap), or to make one from scratch, follow the below instructions.

2. Buy two pieces of embroidery floss (thread) from any fabric store.

3. Remove the paper covering the thread of one of the pieces but be careful to keep the thread as is.

4. Fold the thread in half, then using thread from the other piece, wrap this around the folded section of thread to create a loop, knot the thread but leave a length of thread to attach to the cap.

5. Cut the loops at the bottom of the tassel (there should be two sections under the part just tied off in an upside down ‘v’ shape) so they are all now loose – this is the fringe of the tassel.

6. Attach the remaining long piece of thread to the cap at the length that you wish.

Decorations Celebrate your success, wherever you are. Set up decorations for your big day with help from friends and family. Why not bake a cake and adorn it with one of our cake toppers?

After you have printed and cut these out, you can attach them to toothpicks or wooden cooking skewers (both available at your local supermarket) using clear tape or blue tack.

Celebration buntings

Pages 10-13 contain easy to cut celebration buntings. After you have printed and cut these out, use a hole punch to create holes for a ribbon or string in the top two corners. Feed the ribbon or string through the first hole (going behind the flag) and back through the second hole. Secure the ribbon/string with clear tape on the back once you are happy with the placement of all the flags.

How to change your Zoom background

Change your Zoom background on the desktop app

1. In the Zoom app, click on your profile in the top right corner (this is an icon with either your picture or initials), and click Settings.

2. On the menu to the left, click Virtual Background.

3. You’ll see a few default background options provided by Zoom, such as an outer space scene or blades of grass. You can choose one of those by clicking on it. You will see your background change automatically. If you have a green screen, you can choose the option to use green screen. For more information on green screen, click the question mark icon next to this option.

Using an ANU Zoom background

4. Download the images from this pack (found here https://bit.ly/3juJuG8) that you want to use, and save to your computer.

5. In the Zoom app, on the Virtual Background Page, click the + icon next to Choose Virtual Background. A box will pop up allowing you to upload a photo from your computer. Click on the image you downloaded, and it will appear alongside the other pictures as an option for you to choose from.

6. To remove any images you upload from Zoom, tap the X in the top left corner of that image.

1. When you log into your account and join a meeting, tap the three dots at the bottom right of the screen to open the More menu.
