Barbara Weaver’s idea came to her in a dream. She had felt the pull at her heart to dosomething for the BOLD women of Metro District during the long, and often scary time ofthe more than 50 days of lock-down during the pandemic. Plans and activities across theMetro District had been cancelled this spring, and she felt a huge void in her heart. Shecalled upon her leadership team to tell them that she had an idea that she wanted to runby them - a Metro District Virtual Mother’s Day Tea. hearts of the women in Metro District, but it had to have the secondary purpose to benefita local organization involving women and children.

The team got together on a conference call and mapped out the details. The agendawould reflect an in-person Metro District UMW meeting – greeting, recitation of thePurpose of UMW, sharing the day’s Mission Focus and birthday from the Prayer Calendar,Joys and Concerns and so on. But it had to be held in a “virtual” environment. Barbarawas up for the challenge to host on Zoom. She said the pandemic has brought newlearning opportunities to her unlike at any other time.

The team knew that a musical piece had to be included, and it did not take long to callupon Rose Taylor of Walnut Hill UMC, who readily accepted the invitation. The Tea Partywould follow the etiquette of “low tea”, that is, an afternoon tea served between 3:00 and5:00 PM with scones and sandwiches. The women would be encouraged to “dress up”,wear a hat, and bring their teacup and saucer to their laptop, computer, or personaldevice. A sense of competition was added to the details; to recognize the best hat andmost exquisite teacup.

The decision to honor the Dallas Bethlehem Center as the target of fundraising cameeasily. The Dallas Bethlehem Center is a mission focus for the Metro District UMW.Chelsea White, the executive director has said ‘the first words of our mission are: “Inpartnership with South Dallas/Fair Park children and families.” To me, that’s what makesDallas Bethlehem Center so special. We’ve been a beacon of this community for morethan 70 years, so there’s a sense of generational ownership. We are intentional aboutworking shoulder to shoulder with the neighborhood residents. Several DBC programs, such as our food distribution program and our four annual community events, arecommunity-directed.’ The pandemic crisis hit South Dallas quickly and it hit hard. DBC is afirst responder to the community and they need the love offerings during this challengingtime.

The Virtual Tea Party was a huge success. Held on Saturday, May 9 using the Zoommeeting format, and Barbara Weaver was at the helm. As it was the day before Mother’sDay, Juanda Wallace of Warren UMC UMW and Metro District’s Social Action chair shareda special tribute to mothers during the party. There were 57 participants from 18 MetroDistrict Units. The Hat Parade was a visual feast of elaborate hats bursting with color, flowers, ribbons, and bows. Rose Taylor constructed her own hat for the event. She isrecognized in the best hat category alongside Wendy Campbell, Robbye Williams andFannie Smith. Honorable mention to Joyce Whiteley. Teacup Challenge winners are LisaCairy of FUMC Duncanville UMW, Zuri Woods of St. Luke “Community” UMC, RoseTaylor, Walnut Hill UMC and honorable mention to Dr. Thalia Matherson, Warren UMCUMW. Thank you to all who wore their hats and brought their teacups!
