Each school day, with few exceptions, we need volunteers to help in the cafeteria and monitor recess on the playground. In the cafeteria, volunteers assist students with condiments, utensils, and clear tables. On

the playground, volunteers (family members of students K - 8) assist school staff with supervision and help to maintain a safe environment for the school children to play. Students love it when family

members come in and show interest in their school day! Please see the Sign-Up Genius site to volunteer! ALL VOLUNTEERS MUST BE E3 CERTIFIED before volunteering. Thank you!

‘We’re back: Now what? St. Joseph School families are invited to join Dr. Nolan on September 22 at 7pm to hear her perspective on parenting during the pandemic, conflict in our communities, going back to school, and the uncertainty that has plagued us over the last 18 months. Many of us are worried about how to move forward as we once again enter a school year that will likely be influenced by the pandemic. In this session we will bring it back to the basics of sound, practical parenting. What to attend to, what to let slide, how to protect our child’s mental health without “snowplowing” away the experiences they need to become strong and resilient.

Availability of Uniform 1/2 zips, crewnecks, and school pride wear Many of you school families have probably experienced shortages or

supply-chain issues with items that you've ordered or tried to purchase. This has been a problem industry-wide in recent months. And

unfortunately, Donald's, our uniform supplier, has been experiencing the same issues in procuring some of our items from the distributors. The

order that was placed very early August, is currently being embroidered and we expect to receive it soon. Another order, placed in late August, is

being put together for the embroiderers, but there are some items on back order. However, once we receive that later order, we should for the

most part, be able to fill the current orders submitted so far. Also, because of the scarcity of some items, distributors are raising prices on

some, but Donald's is trying to keep as low as possible. As parents, this is what we ask for any future order you wish to place.

Please use the red or green order forms that were included in the summer packet (or obtain from school). Be sure to include your email

address or phone number. Don't include a check until we can verify if the item you are ordering is available. You'll be notified of the order status,

and if the item is available, you'll receive an email/or call with the amount due. At that point, you can give the go-ahead or not. If you have any

specific questions, please direct them to [email protected]

Thanks for your understanding of this, hopefully short, glitch in the ordering process.

Sunday Readings and Backgrounds

Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading I : Wisdom 2:12, 17-20 God will take care of him.

• The poetry of the Book of Wisdom was written for Jews suffering persecution.

• The just individual is persecuted by the wicked for trying to live faithfully to God's law.

• The first reading compliments today’s Gospel in which Jesus tells of his own suffering and death. Reading II : James 3:16-4:3 Where does conflict among you originate?

• James is very clear about the qualities that we can use to judge the source of a person's wisdom.

• Jealousy and disorder are not in accord with God's righteousness.

• James describes the proper conduct of those who try to live in accord with God's ways. Gospel : Mark 9:30-37 All who wish to be first must make themselves the servants of all.

• Today's Gospel begins with Jesus foretelling his suffering, death and resurrection. The disciples do not understand.

• Then Jesus sits down to teach about serving others.

• Jesus welcomes a child into his arms to teach the disciples that to rank first, one must be the last of all.

Activities of the Week Choose one of the following activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings:

• Jesus teaches that “Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and the servant of all.” When do you want to be first in line or first to do something fun? When do you want to be the first one to help someone in need?

• As a family, view one of these movies: Gandhi, Mission, Romero, or Schindler’s List, all available on DVD or Blu-ray. Talk about the kind of service the movie illustrates.

• How good are you at serving others? Rate yourself on a scale of one to ten. Share with family members why you gave yourself this score.

• Write the names of each person in your family. Tell how that person serves your family. Decide as a family how you will serve one another this week.

Family page information can be found on the Lifelong Catechesis page of Our Sunday Visitor. OSV’s mission is to help Catholic fulfill their calling to discipleship, strengthen their relationship with Christ,

deepen their commitment to the church, and contribute to its growth and vitality in the world.
