Some Very Basic Features in

Virtual Reality – just to give

some startup images and ideas The “reality” that you see in virtual location is comprised of shapes and textures that are either displayed (rendered) or saved in inventories; avatars and objects can have scripts and programming within them that can let them interact and perform actions

For simplicity, these features are shown through the Second Life Viewer on a Second Life island but you will find these same features in most viewers an on other virtual reality venders too

We will learn much more in the course about virtual reality. And, there are online tutorial on building on the web too. You can play with build in sandbox areas and in the locations that you will be getting for yourself after the next class. Although some of the interfaces have been updated since these tutorial were made, you will find basic building / navigating skills here and you will find some more advanced building skills here – make adjustments for slight menu differences.

Things to do with your land• But pay attention to “land impact” – you have a limited number

of items you can have in use at one time

• Experiment and save things in your inventory

• Take Snapshots & Machinima to show all your different creations; even if they aren’t all viewable at one time

• Display some of the images in your buildings

• Whenever you visit other locations, gather ideas for your own buildings

You have Inventories with many objects that belong to your avatar –you can purchase more and you can make more (when you make objects, you save them in your inventory); the orange slides show you some inventory features – landmarks to clothing

Inventories and

editing can relate to

your avatar

The next group of

dark blue slides show

some of the things you

can do with your

avatar through

inventories and

through direct

adjustments

Learning about land ownership is important; it can tell you about how land is set up and about what you can do on this piece of land

Right click the land > click About Land to learn some features

The green slides show you some of how land and land rights work

31

Use the Objects tab to learn about the “capacity” of a parcel; you only have a limited number of items (now called impact) –you’ll have to keep your capacity in mind when building

32

On the Options tab you see what is allow in terms of building, flying, moving objects in, etc.; this land parcel indicates that everyone can build – thus, a sandbox (on other tabs the owner says for how many minutes objects can stay)

33

On the Sound tab, you set up if and how far voices can travel –important if you are setting up meeting spaces

34

If you are the owner, the Access tab lets you restrict or ban particular avatars – you don’t have to allow annoying avatars even if you have a public land (like ESC) – you can purchase private lands too

36

It helps to understand how to understand how to interpret objects . . . and how to set parameters on objects that you create. The cloth-textured slides provide some information about objects and ownership

Objects can have colors, textures, scripts (programming) and can even display websites & YouTubes

38

The owner of an object (you perhaps) can set up cost structures and can determine if purchased or shared objects can then be modified or copied

40

These purple slides show some fun with Karts – they are in your inventory – in land you own or in sandbox areas you can ride them

Review these slides to learn more. And, look at the scripts in them too to see something about the programming you can do

The Tracker lets you know about visitor-- you will get this and other materials from your instructor
