Session 1 (June 22-June 26, 2020) - 1 Week

Theme: Fun With Improv

Module 1 (10 AM-11 AM): Acting Out a Story

Using Improvisational techniques, students will learn to create original stories and act them out with their whole bodies.

Module 2 (11 AM-Noon): Puppetry

Students will create puppets out of common household items and use them to develop original skits.

Module 3 (1 PM-2 PM): Improvisation

Students will be introduced to a variety of theatre games and improv techniques emphasizing creativity, spontaneity, and using your body and voice.

Session 2 (June 29-July 10, 2020)

Theme: World Traditions

Module 1 (10 AM-11 AM): Acting

Students will learn about theatre in different cultures and develop short performances based on Eastern, African, and Caribbean folktales.

Module 2 (11 AM-Noon): Music and Dance

Students will learn songs, rhythms, and movement traditions from around the world and practice dance routines in a raucous daily movement party.

Module 3 (1 PM-2 PM): Hands-On Theatre Making

Students will use household objects to create masks, costumes, and instruments and use them to explore theatre traditions from a variety of cultures.

Session 3 (July 13-July 24, 2020)

Theme: Mysteries


From acting out detective stories to searching for buried treasure, students will use mysteries as a jumping-off point to develop acting, improvisation, voice, and movement skills.

Module 2 (11 AM-Noon): Puppetry

Students will create a variety of puppets and use them to develop “mystery theatre” stories.

Module 3 (1 PM-2 PM): Character Party

Students will develop a variety of characters and meet in a daily party setting to explore whodunnits, mysterious happenings, and special surprises!

Session 4 (July 27-August 7, 2020)

Theme: Shakespeare


A fun exploration of the actor’s process through theatre games and activities—from creating a character to finding power in your body and voice.

Module 2 (11 AM-Noon): Fun with Shakespeare

A lively introduction to the great stories of Shakespeare culminating in a (very) abbreviated performance of one of the Bard’s most beloved works.

Module 3 (1 PM-2 PM): Music and Dance

From learning classical movement to hip hop and singing songs of all kinds, this class will explore a variety of music, movement, and dance styles as students create their own “performance piece.”

Session 5 (August 10-August 21, 2020)

Theme: Devised Theatre - Heroes and Villains


What does the character want and what do they do to get it? These are the core principles of modern acting, and this module dives into “objectives and actions” through exciting games and activities. This class includes lots of focus on the body, voice, and imagination as students create characters and scenes featuring heroes and villains.

Module 2 (11 AM-Noon): Acting Out an Original Story

Using improvisation and scene-building techniques, students will create original short plays involving villains, superheroes, and everyday heroes.

Module 3 (1 PM-2 PM): Character Crafts

From magic wands to masks to tin foil hats, campers will create costumes and props to bring visual life to original characters they create.


Theme: Comedy

Module 1 (10 AM-11 AM): A Funny Thing Happened….

Students will learn the basics of comedy and timing and act out short comic stories.

Module 2 (11 AM-Noon): Improvisation

Students will use improvisational games and techniques to create comic sketches and scenes.

Module 3 (1 PM-2 PM): Puppetry

Students will explore Commedia Dell’ Arte and other comedy forms as they make puppets and perform comic puppet shows.

Encores Entering 3rd and 4th Grade (Fall of 2020) REGISTER NOW

Session 1 (June 22-June 26, 2020)-1 Week


Module 1 (10 AM-11 AM): Improvisation

Students will explore a variety of fun and fast-paced improvisational techniques and theatre games, focusing on developing plot, working with scene partners, and thinking on your feet.

Module 2 (11 AM-Noon): Character Creation

Students will create original characters and stories through improvisational techniques. From developing unique voices to inventing circumstances and settings, this class is for anyone who likes to role play.

Module 3 (1 PM-2 PM): Using Your Body as an Actor

This is an “on your feet,” movement-based class featuring actor’s warm-ups, improv exercises designed to evoke large physical choices in the creation of scenes and characters, and games focusing on spontaneous actions.

Module 4 (2 PM-3 PM): Making Theatre from Household Objects

Taught by one of the area’s top prop designers, this class will help students create costumes, props, sets, and more from simple objects around the house. Students will then use their creations in improvised scenes and stories.

Students will be introduced to techniques in acting for the camera, using scripts from TV and film scenes from around the world. All kids will be recorded and get to watch themselves in playback.

Module 3 (1 PM-2 PM): Movement for the Actor

Using theatre and movement traditions from around the world, students will learn to increase physical expressiveness and make strong choices with their bodies as they develop characters, act out stories, and create performance pieces to music.

Module 4 (2 PM-3 PM): Puppetry

Students will explore puppetry traditions from around the world, including shadow puppets, bunraku, and Britain’s Punch and Judy. Using common objects found around the house, students will create their own puppets and puppet shows.


Theme: Mysteries

Module 1 (10 AM-11 AM): Close-Up Magic

One of the area’s top magicians teaches sleight of hand working with cards, coins, napkins, string, and other common household objects. In addition to performing magic tricks, students will create their own “magician persona.”

Module 2 (11 AM-Noon): Improvisation: The Whodunnit Version

Using a variety of improvisational games and techniques, students will focus on creating storylines that involve unanswered questions and mysterious happenings. A deep dive into the who, what, when, where, and why of dramatic structure.

Theme: Mysteries

Module 3 (1 PM-2 PM): Prop Making and Storytelling

What’s a mystery without the clues left behind? This class will focus on creating props and costume pieces that give a physical dimension to any good hair-raising tale—and then create and perform a story using those props.

Module 4 (2 PM-3 PM): Acting

From acting out detective stories to re-enacting ancient quests, students will use mysteries as a jumping-off point to develop acting, improvisation, voice, and movement skills.


Theme: Shakespeare


A lively introduction to the great stories of Shakespeare culminating in an abbreviated performance of one of the Bard’s most beloved works.

Module 2 (11 AM-Noon): Movement and Dance

From pantomime to street styles, this class features a wide variety of movement and dance training designed to get kids moving and increase their comfort level with making strong physical choices. Students will apply their movement and dance skills to some of Shakespeare’s most vivid lines.

Module 3 (1 PM-2 PM): Costume Design

From creating flower garlands to making swords and tunics to fashioning a Shakespearean ruff, this class will help students design costumes for their own Shakespearean characters using items they already have at home. Students will rehearse using these costumes in scene work.

Module 4 (2 PM-3 PM): Object Theatre

An exciting art form akin to puppetry, object theatre teaches students to bring “found objects” to life through voice characterization and prop manipulation. Students will work with different objects throughout the course, animating them to create characters and scenes from Shakespeare and other famous stories.

Students will learn techniques in acting for the camera, using scripts they develop with the help of the instructor. All students will be recorded and get to watch themselves in playback.

Module 2 (11 AM-Noon): Acting

This course will focus on developing and performing original scripts devised through improvisation and short writing exercises.

Module 3 (1 PM-2 PM): Set Design

Students will work with the instructor to design a set for any story or play that captures their imagination. From creating a shoebox model to arranging whatever is in their physical environment, this class lets students’ imaginations run wild as they learn what it takes to create the world of the play. Students will have the option of writing and/or acting out scenes on their sets.

Module 4 (2 PM-3 PM): Mystery Party

Students will develop a variety of characters and meet in a daily party setting to explore whodunnits, mysterious happenings, and special surprises! Every day has a different party theme (could be dinner in a castle, a trip on the Orient Express, or a reunion of the World’s Greatest Detectives!) and requires a different character. This class is for anyone who loves to role play and solve mysteries!


Theme: Comedy

Module 1 (10 AM-11 AM): Puppetry

Students will explore Commedia Dell’ Arte and other comedy forms as they make puppets and perform comic puppet shows.

Module 2 (11 AM-Noon): Music, Dance, and Physical Comedy

Create dances and sing to some of the most fun and funniest songs ever created, and learn some basic skills of physical comedy and timing.

Module 3 (1 PM-2 PM): Character Party

A daily dinner party gathering celebrities, characters from popular fiction, aliens, and more who interact through a series of wild and fun improv exercises. Everyday has a different party theme (could be a luau, a birthday party, or a marshmallow roast!) and requires a different character. This class is for anyone who loves to role play!

Module 4 (2 PM-3 PM): Improvisation

Students will use a variety of high-energy improvisational games and techniques to create comic sketches and scenes.

An introduction to stage combat and sword play with safe techniques you can try at home. Taught by one of DC’s best-known fight directors, this class is specifically designed to allow students to create “stage fights” on the digital platform.

From exploring given circumstances, to developing specific habits of speech and movement, to creating an external appearance, this class allows students to take on a variety of Shakespearean and other famous characters, creating costumes, props, and short improvised scenes to bring these characters to vivid life.

Get off the couch and celebrate the potential of your body in space! This class features exercises drawn from yoga, mime and character movement, dance, and aerobics to get hearts pumping, minds focused, and students enjoying their complete range of motion as theatre artists.

Taught by a master of comedy improv, this class teaches the principles of comedic timing and how to tell a comic story with your body. The course uses both improvisation and scene work to explore physical comedy styles and, yes, how to do the perfect pratfall!

Session 2/3 (June 29-July 24, 2020)-4 Weeks

Musical Theatre Workshop

(culminates in a fully-produced digital broadcast)

Module 1 (10 AM-11 AM): Musical Theatre Workshop*

Students will gain acting, singing, and movement skills as they rehearse and perform a showcase featuring scenes, monologues, and musical theatre songs. Each student will perform at least one musical solo and one scene in the showcase as well as participate in collaborative numbers. Students will be working with professional theatre directors and music directors to choose the material and develop the showcase. Each day will feature a combination of acting training and musical theatre skill development in small ”breakout groups” as well as physical and vocal warm-ups and social “green room” time. Students performances will be recorded throughout the session and the final product will be broadcast as a watch party for students, friends, and family from near and far. Please note: If your student was especially looking forward to Oklahoma, they are welcome to perform material from that show in the showcase.

Module 1 (10 AM-11 AM): Shakespeare’s As You Like It *

An exploration of one of Shakespeare’s greatest comedies culminating in a full production! This intensive program will give participants the tools to create and perform the Bard’s beloved classic about transformation in the Forest of Arden, a dream-like world full of delightful characters, intrigue, romance, and much more. Each day will feature a combination of acting training in small ”breakout groups,” play rehearsal, and social “green room” time. As You Like It will be filmed on the Zoom platform and broadcast on the final evening as a “watch party “for students, friends, and family from near and far.

Co-taught by one of DC’s best-known fight directors and a professional juggler, this class is specifically designed for the digital platform (even the “stage fights!”).
