What is a Virtue ????

A virtue is an acquired disposition that isvalued as part of the character of a morally

good human being and that is exhibited in

the persons habitual behavior.

For Example :-

Honesty is valued to as a character trait of a morally

good person.

A Moral Virtue must be acquired.

A Moral Virtue is praiseworthy in part because it isan achievement & its development requires effort.

Virtue Ethics: -

It may be identified as the approach that emphasizes

on the fact that Virtues or moral character are the

main basis of ethics.

Utilitarianism, Justice, Rights & Care look at the

ACTION EVALUATION whereas Virtue Ethics

concentrates on the CHARACTER EVALUATION

of a person.

Aristotles theory of Eudaemonia: -

There are three important concepts in AristotlesTheory of Ethics:

1.Arte (excellence or virtue).

2.Phronesis (practical or moral wisdom).

3.Eudaemonia (flourishing or happiness).

Eudaimon means a state of flourishing, or leading

a worthwhile life.

In order to reach this state of flourishing one must

possess the relevant Arte or Virtues.

The longer you practice, the more virtuous you will

become according to Aristotles concept of

practical/moral wisdom, Phronesis.

For Aristotle A moral virtue was the balance

between two vices, calculated by the GoldenMean.
