Visa and Immigration Guideline
International student has to be aware of all immigration procedures regulated by the Thai
Immigration Bureau, for example, obtaining a Non-Immigrant Visa (Category "ED"), notification of
residence, visa extension, notification of staying over 90 days, re-entry permit, and etc.
To determine which immigration procedures you have to follow, first identify your
student status whether you are an international student in a degree program or in a short-term
study program.
1) Student in a degree program such as a Bachelor’s Degree student, a Master’s
Degree student and a Ph.D. student
2) Student in a short-term study program such as an exchange student, an
internship student, a research student

Importance!
1) Tourist visa is unacceptable and cannot be changed to a Non-Immigrant Visa
(Category "ED") which is for educational purposes. The Non-Immigrant Visa can
be obtained only from a Royal Thai Embassy or a Royal Thai Consulate-General
outside of Thailand.
2) The international student holding the Non-Immigrant Visa (Category “ED”) is not
permitted to work.
3) After you complete your study program, your Non-Immigrant Visa (Category "ED")
will be terminated, even though the period of stay is still available.
4) To certify a true copy of original document such as a copy of passport, a copy of
student card, a copy of health insurance card, etc., you have to sign your
signature at the right bottom of every page.

1. Obtaining a Non-Immigrant Visa (Category "ED")
International student is required to obtain a Non-Immigrant Visa (Category "ED") from a
Royal Thai Embassy or a Royal Thai Consulate-General before traveling to Thailand.
To apply for the visa, submit following documents in person;
1) Visa application form (available at the Embassy)
2) Passport with validity not less than 6 months
3) (4 x 6 cm) photographs of the applicant, taken within the past 6 months
4) Letter of acceptance from Walailak University
5) Visa Fee; 2,000 Baht for single entry and 5,000 Baht for multiple entries
However, the required documents will be varied as determined by each Royal Thai Embassy
or each Royal Thai Consulate-General. Please inquire further information at the Royal Thai Embassy
or the Royal Thai Consulate-General where you intend to submit your application.
The validity of visa is a period when the visa can be used to enter Thailand. In general, the
validity of visa is 90 days and is displayed on the visa sticker. Do not apply for the visa earlier than
90 days of your traveling date to Thailand.
The period of stay for the Non-Immigrant Visa (Category "ED") is not exceeding 90 days
from the arrival date. The period of stay granted by the immigration officer is displayed on the
arrival stamp. The student who has a study program longer than 90 days has to apply for an
extension of stay.

2. Notification of Residence
The University, as a house owner, has to report a notification of residence for international
student who resides in on-campus dormitory. According to section 38 of the 1979 Immigration
Act, the house owner has to notify the local immigration authorities within 24 hours from the
arrival time of the foreigner.
To report the notification of residence, on your arrival at the campus, you have to contact
IAO and submit a copy of passport, every used pages including a departure card. Once the report
procedure is done, the report slip will be sent to you to be kept with your passport.
Please note that for each of your traveling out of Thailand and returning to the Campus,
you have to redo your notification of residence. Fail to do so, you have to be responsible for all
fines charged by the Immigration Office. Consequently, you may be unable to extend your period
of stay.

3. Visa Extension
Since the period of stay for the Non-Immigrant Visa (Category "ED") is not exceeding 90
days from the arrival date, the student whose study program is longer than 90 days has to apply
for an extension of stay.
The period of stay can be extended to a maximum of 1 year depending on your study
program and the period approved by IAO. However, the extended period of stay will be not
exceeding the passport validity. If the student wishes to extend the period of stay for 1 year, your
passport has to be valid at least for 1 year.
To extend the visa, the student is required to contact IAO at least 30 days in advance of
the visa’s expiration date and submit following documents:
1) TM. 7 Form - Application for Extension of Temporary Stay in the Kingdom
2) STM. 2 Form - Acknowledgement of Terms and Conditions for Permit of
Temporary Stay in the Kingdom of Thailand
3) Consent to Disclosure of Information Form
4) The Acknowledgement of Penalties for a Visa Overstay Form
5) A copy of passport, every used pages including Departure Card and Residence
Report Slip
6) A copy of acceptance letter
7) A copy of student card
8) A student testimonial letter
9) A transcript record
10) 4 photos showing your study
11) A copy of health insurance main page or card
12) University map
13) 2 recent photo (size 4 x 6 cm), taken within the past 6 months. One of the photos
to be affixed on TM.7 Form
14) Fee; 1,900 Baht
15) A valid passport
Importance!
- Form no. 1) - 4) and document no. 12) are available online at http://iao.wu.ac.th/
- Document no. 8) - 9) can be requested through http://ces.wu.ac.th/. It costs 50
Baht/document. In 2 days after your payment, these documents can be received
at a counter of the Center of Educational Service, located on ground floor of
Thaiburi Building.

Within 7 days, you can receive all the documents back, together with the facilitation letters
issued by IAO. Next, submit all documents in person at the Immigration Office of Nakhon Si
Thammarat as soon as possible.
Importantly, the student is solely responsible for checking their visa validity and taking
necessary steps to extend the visa. Overstaying the period granted by the Immigration Office
results in a fine of 500 Baht per day up to a maximum of 20,000 Baht. Overstaying more than 90
days will be result in banning from re-entry to Thailand. For more information about re-entry

4. Notification of Staying in the Kingdom Over 90 Days
International student staying in the Kingdom of Thailand over 90 days has to notify the
Immigration Office. The notification has to be done every 90 days, within 15 days before or 7 days
after the due date.
To do the notification, submit following documents in person at the Immigration Office
of Nakhon Si Thammarat:
1) TM. 47 Form for Alien to Notify of Staying Longer Than 90 Days (available online
at http://iao.wu.ac.th/)
2) A valid passport
In case that you are not in Nakhon Si Thammarat during those times, the notification can
be made at any Immigration Office throughout Thailand. In addition, if the student leaves
Thailand and re-enters, the due date for the notification of staying over 90 days is recounted
from the 1st arrival date.
Staying in Thailand over 90 days without notifying the Immigration Office or later than
the specified due date results in a fine of 2,000 Baht. In case of being arrested, result in a fine of
4,000 Baht.
5. Re-entry Permit to Return into the Kingdom of Thailand
International student holding a single entry visa and having a plan to travel outside of
Thailand and return by the Non-Immigrant Visa (Category "ED") has to apply for a re-entry permit
before departure. Traveling outside of Thailand without the re-entry permit, your Non-Immigrant
Visa (Category "ED") will be ended.
The re-entry permit can be applied at any Immigration Office or Immigration Checkpoint
throughout Thailand. Except for Suvarnabhumi Airport Immigration Checkpoint, the application
will be available only for some cases under the consideration of Immigration Officer.

Office or Immigration Checkpoint:
1) TM. 8 Application for Re-Entry Permit to Return into the Kingdom (available
online at http://iao.wu.ac.th/)
2) A copy of passport, every used page including Departure Card and Residence
Report Slip.
3) A recent photo (size 4 x 6 cm), taken within the past 6 months
4) Fee; 1,000 Baht for single entry and 3,800 Baht for multiple entry
5) A valid passport
