Vision…
The school aspires to provide a unique combination of a comprehensive quality education and Islamic teachings to a varied expatriate student body, irrespective of their nationality and religion. This will be achieved in a secure, caring and disciplined environment by means of a challenging curriculum that is delivered by a dedicated and qualified teaching body. This faculty will endeavour to help each student to realize his or her intellectual, social, moral and physical potential while developing critical thinking skills.

Dear Parents, Assalamualaikum! At the Junior school, the ticking of time is perhaps a sound that is the loudest. Children rapidly reach milestone after milestone and that becomes evident in their ever growing interaction with the people around them, in their physical growth, in their academic output, so on and so forth. Progression in cognitive abilities has to be met with an equal academic challenge, as they grow. To make this process a productive exercise schools need to look at skill building more than the content. Most schools will run a program that on the surface seems fine, but how the content is handled and what its objective and purpose is, is not looked into deeply enough. This is serious business; for the foundational years of absorption are limited and there is much to be done. The important factor that needs to be addressed in the context of skill building is that of multiple intelligences. The system of education looks at all children with one eye glass, which is unfortunate. Human beings have been invested with abilities of a varied kind-intelligences are of so many types. Yet the system requires every child to do the one English, Math, Science exercise, and perform equally. How? Why? These rhetorical questions, need answers. Not every child needs to be, or indeed wants to be a doctor, an architect, or an engineer when he grows up. Each child has a right to education- education that brings with it a sense of enlightenment and fulfilment- not a sense of boredom & fatigue. Moving into the new campus coincided with our getting re-accredited. This year we have seen a huge rush for admissions. Educating children is perhaps the noblest of acts one can perform and one would like to include as many children in the process as one could, but it is difficult to do so; not just because of space limitations, but also because of conditions imposed by
the Ministry of Education for the hiring of teachers. Over these couple of years we have learnt to adapt to the changes required by the MOE. The beginning of this academic year gave schools some palpitations, leaving them wondering about working statuses owing to iqama issues. The situation is still not resolved and it is anybody's guess which way it will go. There is much reporting and speculation going on in the press and everyone is better advised not to believe everything they read or hear. The use of technology is an integral part of the working of organisations around the world, and we too begin our move this year, to an increasingly paper-less communication. This is why, this time you did not receive a hardcopy of the year - end newsletter. It has been uploaded for you to read. It is a printer friendly version, should you want to download it. Expect a lot of communication next year to be on the school website, including, homework, timetables, circulars and report cards that may be accessed using a password and user id. The school year 2013-14 has come to a close. Some of you have already travelled and some are preparing to do so. Ramadan is round the corner. Take a moment to remind children about the blessings that the Almighty has bestowed upon us; while in war torn countries, children have no life, no hope. May Allah send ease for them, and erase from their minds the agony they are, and have been suffering. I wish you a safe vacation and an extremely spiritually satisfying Ramadan! Best regards
Farozan Warsi Director Junior School

In its 8th
consecutive year, the immensely popular Mom & I art competition- a fabulous success with the mothers and students of Grade 1, was held on the 27
th of February 2014. This year’s theme was whimsical
art and the many pairs of mother and child created a wide range of artwork in the craft category ranging from puppets, an airplane on a runway and a toy box decorated with pistachio shells to varied paintings; a serene desert scene to a bright and colorful circus depiction in the painting category. The judges for the event were Mrs. Seema Ghias and Ms. Sarah Le Meknes. As always, exciting prizes were given out to the winners which were sponsored by Mehran Spices, Reel & Rom, National Biscuits and Confectionary Company and Pioneer Books. Ms. Alima Ali, our art teacher, and her team gave out sweets to the students after the prize distribution from a magical tree which bore sweets instead of fruits. Mothers were invited to write their comments on a bulletin board, all of which expressed joy and contentment for being part of this bonding event between mother and child.
Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.

Two words is all it takes to turn an ordinary day into one filled with merriment, joy, excitement and enthusiasm.......”FIELD TRIP!”
On 3rd March, 2014 the first graders had an opportunity to visit a really sweet place.......’Munch Bakery’. It was a fair Monday morning and all that the kids were concerned about was the time they would reach the bakery.
Reaching Munch Bakery put a start to our delicious food adventure. As we entered it, we sniffed what felt like the most amazing aroma in town. All around us were trays of unbaked cupcakes and cookies that gradually made their way into the hot oven. The kids excitedly tried out newly baked cupcakes and cookies. The workers prepared large chocolate cakes in front of the kids and skillfully iced them, leaving everyone in awe. After trying out marshmallows covered in chocolate, the kids joyfully put angry birds as toppings for their cakes. The journey continued as children moved on from making to eating some of the most deliciously made cookies ever.
As always...all good things must come to an end...and so did the trip to the bakery. The children returned to school with memories that they will probably treasure for a long time. The day concluded with an enjoyable meal from McDonalds.
It was a unique opportunity for the
students (KG 1 – GR 3 except GR 1) to visit
Al Fakeih Aquarium in the second term.
The children were thrilled and over
whelmed to see various kinds of sea
creatures like Starfish. Seahorse, Jellyfish,
shark etc. They enjoyed seeing divers
feeding stingrays. The “Dolphin and the
Sea Lion show” was the highlight of the
trip. The children watched with animation
clearly evident on their faces as dolphins
and sea lions performed. Visiting the
aquarium with the students was a great
way to bring education alive and learn
more about marine environment.

“Reach for the stars” was an obstacle race that was conducted on March 3rd
2014. Running obstacle courses build children’s cardiovascular health and
gross motor skills and helps develop the ability to remember multi-step
directions. Obstacles included a ladder to walk along, a tunnel to climb through,
a set of cups to balance, hula hoops to step in and a path of "curved lines" and
finally reaching for the stars hung on the finishing line. In short, an obstacle
course is a super skill-builder that is enjoyed by one and all!

Six plays……from six different parts
of the world…..that was the theme
behind the Grade 1 event “Around
the world in six plays" which took
place on the 19th of March 2014 on
the Junior school grounds.
Each section of Grade 1 performed a
short skit representing a country with
a message to deliver. Teachers
ensured that each child had a role to
play.
Grade 1A performed on the story ' The Prince' a folktale from Japan, followed by
Grade 1B performing a Mexican story ' The three brothers'. Grade 1C showed us
through their performance 'How the Brazilian Beetles got their coat'. After some
amazing performances by the boys it was the turn of the girls’ Grade 1D represented
Spain and performed on the story 'The Drum'. Soon after, there were girls from Grade
1E who chose a story from Netherlands- an emotional story called 'How wheat turned
into misery'. And finally we had the Grade 1F girls who performed on the story ' God is
Great' an inspiring story from Scotland.
The Junior school had an
opportunity to witness some
incredible narrators, and
many confident performers to
match with their colourful
attire. The event was a great
success with the audience
enthralled, fascinated by the
little performers.

Observation fortnight for the K.G 1s, 2s and 3s took place from the 6th April to
17th April 2014. Classroom observation has many valid and important
educational purposes. Mothers get an opportunity to observe not just how the
teacher teaches but also how her child responds in a classroom environment.
She gets a chance to watch her child interacting with his peers, discover
his/her interests and understand his/her needs. Great observations are
recorded by mothers and we thank several of them who have appreciated the
efforts of their child's teacher.
Model making is a hands-on way to help children learn different
concepts taught in class. The students of grade 3 made the dioramas
of the water cycle in groups of fours. They managed to make their
models as realistic as they could. As a result, we witnessed the
exquisite dioramas that looked exquisite and in the end the children
explained the whole process with the help of their models.
KG 2 and KG 3 –Germination
Activity
Parts of a plant were explored by the KG2 &3 children along with the planting activity. Mustard seeds were sown by the children themselves after checking the soil and watering it. When they saw the seeds sprout and the roots grow, their pleasure knew no limits. They also learned to read and label parts of the plant.

● ● ● ElEctric circuits….going with thE flow…..
Independent project work is as important as group projects. It helps
build self-confidence and allows children to achieve ‘hands on’
experiences of lessons learnt in class. On 17th March 2014 students
from Grade 3 made circuits individually and were ecstatic about
their work. You could actually watch “the real learning” happening.
Group projects can help students develop a host of skills that are
increasingly important in the competitive world. It breaks the
complex tasks into parts and steps and refines understanding
through discussion and explanation. Group projects can also help
students develop skills specific to collaborative efforts, allowing
them to establish a shared identity with other group members and
find effective peers to emulate. On 20th February 2014 Grade 3
students enthusiastically participated in a group activity where
they made beautiful clay models of different simple machines such
as models of lever, pulley wedge, wheel and axle. They exhibited
excellent artistic skills and their eye catching displays were worth
seeing!

Health Awareness week was
observed from 6th April to 10th April 2014 ( KG 1- GR 3). Many of the activities tied into the theme of the event. The goal of the activity was to expand awareness about healthy eating and healthy living. It brought into focus how healthy food and lifestyle choices have a positive impact on our health. During special assembly, Grade 3 students, Abdul Wali, Zain Waseem, Aashir Ahmed and Reem Hamraz spoke about the importance of eating healthy food rather than junk and its effect on the academic performance of the students. Grade 3 students actively participated in the activity wherein they had to identify and differentiate different food groups.
Speed Track:
Calculating speed and distance -Grade 3
Practical work helps in acquiring of
scientific knowledge and scientific
outlook; the twin main objectives of
teaching Science. It follows the basic
principle of Learning by Doing. The
students get an opportunity to actively
participate in the learning process. On
5th March 2014, Grade 3 students
participated in the “Speed Track Race”.
The children were divided into teams of
four .The purpose of this activity was to
analyze the relationship between the
two components, distance and time......
thus calculating speed. A fast paced
activity, students explored how fast they
could run and calculated their speed
themselves.
Application of scientific models created a lot of
buzz among the Grade 3’s this year. Models
provide an environment for interactive student
engagement. Evidence from science education
research shows that significant learning gains
are achieved when students participate in
the interactive engagement activities. Working
with models can enhance systems'
thinking abilities and are useful for helping
students learn quantitative skills. Students were
shown the models of Teeth, Eye and Ear and
they were seen thoroughly engrossed in the
activity.

MULTIPLICATION WEEK-GRADE 2
Sunday 16th to Thursday 20th February 2014 saw the Grade 2s participating in a week long marathon that involved various activities, and all of them related to multiplication. These stress free activities motivated the children to review their tables and understand multiplication exercises in a fun and entertaining way. The marathon concluded with ‘Racing for Numbers which was a relay race. Learning need not be monotonous, it can be fun too. Four groups of five children each.....one objective; run to the table with the basket as fast as possible, pick a slip with a math problem, solve it, give it to the person in charge and run and tag the next team member. All children participated in the relay and they had three rounds. The team to finish first with all answers correct was declared the Math champion.
Fun with Fractions- Grade 2
In this activity, children brought foods that they liked and divided them into equal
parts. Children made different fractions with the eatables and shared them with
friends. Although the lesson objective here was to learn about fractions, dividing and
sharing taught children not just the math concept, but also helped them build
relationships with their peers.
Perhaps few are aware of the hadith that brings into focus importance of a green Earth. The Prophet of Islam, Peace be upon him, is known to have said that if the earth is shaken to its core, and you are, at that time holding a sapling in your hands, then plant it immediately. Guided by this philosophy, we are encouraging children to move towards a greener school too. The KG 3's were out in full force planting saplings in the environment. They followed the planting process as well learnt the botanical name of the plants they planted.

Visitor in the Classroom
As children grow in age, their ability to express their thoughts in writing advances and becomes more mature. They learn to be more descriptive, and have a wider range of vocabulary to choose from and their knowledge of various grammar concepts enables them to have better writing styles. Having unusual visitors or situations to tickle their creative minds, is nothing new here and children who have older siblings know about the previous visitor who have been brought in. So when the teachers informed the children about the unusual visitor this term, many said, “We know! A turtle....a baby!.....a cat!” Finally, they were all taken to the audio-visual room and there they found a lady in a white coat. “A doctor!” they shouted. She then introduced herself as Dr. Tahira Anjum....a dentist. She spoke to the children about herself, how she became a dentist, what her profession requires, what the children need to know about tooth care and finally, she showed them a video about how dentists helps take care of our teeth. Grade 1s, 2s and 3s then got down to writing about this unusual visitor. Each grade level seemed to have deciphered the information age appropriately and their writing is a display of that. Writing projects become stimulating when they have unusual and exciting elements to write about. It is an exercise children take up as stress free activities.

Logical reasoning enables us to go
beyond the information given and
use our observations and thought
processes to predict possibility vs.
impossibility. The students of Grade
3 were given an opportunity to put
their heads together in groups to
pack a raw egg any way they liked.
The objective of this exercise was to
get their reasoning abilities ticking.
They needed to ensure that the egg
was protected such, that it did not
crack when it was dropped from a
height. Children had the thrilling
experience of being in charge! This
required deliberate brainstorming,
extensive planning, and spot on
execution. Most of them nailed it
while some just missed. It was a
great learning experience that
taught the children the importance
of decision making and taking on
the responsibility of the
consequences that followed too. The
sense of triumph and
accomplishment on their faces was
worth watching.

With scorching temperatures this summer,
cooling off with some water games was
just the fun we needed at kindergarten.
Children were all set and ready to get wet
and soaked on 21st April 2014! For the
event there were a variety of water stations
set up in the playground. The first station
was for “Bubbles” where children enjoyed
blowing bubbles to their hearts content! In
Water Balloon Toss teachers divided the
children into two groups and made them
stand across each other. Children had to
toss a water balloon back and forth,
stepping further back with each toss. In
Wet Relay and Wet Sponge Relay four
buckets were filled with water, four empty
cups, and four large sponges (like car
wash sponges) were used. Four teams
were formed. Each team made a line next
to a bucket filled with /water. When the
game started, the first member of each
team had to put the cup /sponge in the
water, hold it and run towards a bucket at
the other end of the ground. They had to
squeeze/ transfer the water into the bucket
and run back. This continued on with the
rest of the players. The first team to fill the
bucket won. In Splash children had to wet
the sponge and throw it through the cut out
picture.
It was not just another morning
at school on 28th April 2014; it
was a special day.....the Grade 1
“Word Dash”! In this activity,
each student came up to the
podium to find jumbled letters
which they then arranged into
a word. It was an engaging
exercise that saw children use
their intellectual capacities to
form their words within a set
time limit. There were no
winners or losers......just a bunch
of happy excited children
learning the English language
through play.

Grammar Parade……….
The main objective behind this event was to strengthen the concept of the various
parts of speech done by the K.G 3s. The Grammar Parade consisted of six groups i.e.
Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Opposites, Singular/Plurals and Punctuations. A Tall Green
Witch hosted the parade and announced each part of speech with its description
and.... out walked the ‘Nouns’ with models, ‘Adjectives’ dressed as Describing words,
‘Verbs’ in action, while the ‘Opposites’ and ‘Singular/Plurals’ marched in pairs. The
parade was followed by delightful songs by each group and the event came to an
interesting end with an interactive session with the audience as they helped the K.G 3
children standing with placards, unscramble a couple of jumbled sentences. What an
innovative way of learning grammar!
My Portfolio (KG1-KG3) “My Portfolio" was scheduled for Thursday, May 15, 2014. A portfolio is a
compilation of student-teacher selected work. It is the culmination of the entire work
the child has done through the year, duly saved and compiled. Mothers are invited to
take a closer look at the children's progress throughout the year and share in the
pride of their child’s accomplishments.

PowerPoint Presentation- Grade 3 In this techno-savvy world, children learn to use technology even before they learn life skills. So it was no surprise when the Grade 3s did an engaging exercise of creating their PowerPoint Presentations. Each class was divided into groups of five preparing a presentation on a variety of topics like Endangered Species, Underwater Creatures, Solar System, Sports…etc. The process of researching, preparing, executing and refining their work were all done at school. All students had an opportunity to view the PowerPoint done by the rest of the teams. To view these excellent pieces of work, visit the school website and click on ‘Events and Activities.’
Perceptions-Make a Picture (K.G 3, Grade 1,2,& 3) In our effort to try to get children to be better readers who not only comprehend what they read, but also process what they comprehend, the children are provided with many reading opportunities. We try to cultivate careful reading in children so that they learn to maintain focus on their writing tasks when they are required to do so. And yet, each child has his/her own perceptions where they read the same text and decipher it so very differently. This activity aimed at merging Reading with Art. The children read instructions given and created a picture accordingly. Each child made a picture the way he/she comprehended the text. Children and adults always seem to see the world in different ways. That goes for what we read and how we perceive things that we read. Truly, exceptional works of art!

Creativity is the freest form of self-expression. There is nothing more satisfying and fulfilling for children than to be able to express themselves openly and without judgment. Learning can be imposed and become unpleasant and burdensome, or it can be creative and actually become a source of immense pleasure. Creativity is a simple term that permits the human mind to generate ideas, hypothesize, examine and apply various outcomes. This venture was to bring together various schools of the community. All schools have the same objective; to provide children with a safe and stimulating learning environment, and to give them opportunities that help them excel. Al Waha conducted an Inter-school Creative Writing Competition titled "Pen Your Imagination" on 9th March 2014. The three schools that participated besides the host school were: Manarat International School Yusr International School Pakistan International School

Grade 3 Graduation
Junior School Graduation for the Grade 3s was held on 22nd May 2014. This year’s
graduation class consisted of 105 students, each one with a personality of his/her
own. Mrs. Fazeena Zacky kindly agreed to grace the occasion with her presence as
the chief guest.
As always, the event commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran and its
translation. This was followed by the song, ‘I am a Promise’ performed beautifully by
the Grade 3 students. It was a sight to behold, as all 105 children stood together and
affirmed their trust in Allah and their belief that they could be whoever they wanted
to be with Allah’s help.
An interesting highlight of the day was the Grade 3 debate on the subject of whether
or not homework should be given to students. Each team consisted of seven students.
Mrs. Rubab Azad (Academic Director, Al Waha International school, Senior Section)
kindly agreed to do the most difficult of jobs- the judging of the debate. She
applauded the effort of both the teams and said that she found their debating abilities
very impressive.
Then came the distribution of diplomas. Year after year we watch with a sense of
gratification, as children walk the red carpet with muted anticipation to collect their
diplomas while their mothers watch with unimaginable pride and pleasure. It's a
moment when we realise that all the sweat and tears have borne fruit.
The graduation reached its peak with the declaration of the winner of the Roll of
Honour. Abeer Asif was the winner of the Roll of Honour for the year 2013-2014.
Following close behind were Abdul Wali, the first contender and Aashir Ahmed, the
second contender. The other two finalists were Areej Mamdouh and Reem Hamraz.

Time is of the essence........ The most valuable resource provided to us by the Almighty is 'time'. That, unfortunately is also the resource that is squandered the most. And what's more, we know that we will be questioned about how we used our time on earth. Teaching children the value of time is never one of the priorities in our agenda as we nurture our kids. Is the time that is available to us during the day being utilised appropriately? Strange as it may sound, some parents will ask the school to provide the children with extra homework to keep them busy. Would it not be nice to draft a plan for the holidays that incorporates a variety of activities that can keep them productively engaged. Reading varied literature should be the top of this list. www.kid-at-art.com (The Imagination Factory) is an awarding winning website you might want to visit to find activities for your children. We suggest that you make these summer holidays a time that is accounted for as being fruitful in more ways than one.

The ultimate goal of rewarding children is to help them
internalize positive behaviours so that they will not need a reward. Eventually, self-
