Service Learning

CYC staff and AmeriCorps members conducted 11 service learning-oriented programs in 18 sites around the Des Moines area.

Examples of 2014-2015 projects: Students completed 20 hours of service work to create an

environmental movie and then showcased it to the community with over 100 students in attendance.

Students worked lunch periods to engage the entire student body in writing compliment cards for their teachers. Each teacher and faculty member received at least two cards.

CYC ACCOMPLISHMENTSLaunching the Youth Service Momentum AmeriCorps Program Housed at CYC

In FY2015, 13 AMERICORPS MEMBERS served a total of 16,500 HOURS

of service at 6 SITES around Des Moines. In the 2014-2015 program year, goals

were surpassed ahead of schedule and members mobilized a total of 376 ADULT VOLUNTEERS that contributed 3,681 HOURS back to the community.

TOP (Teen Outreach Program)

CYC ACCOMPLISHMENTS, CONTINUEDMAP (Mentoring Advantage Program)

Over a three-year period (2012-2015), student absences decreased. Percentage of students absent less than 10 days increased from 58% (2012-2013) to 72% (2014-2015).

Over a three-year period (2012-2015), the average number of behavioral referrals decreased from 9.25 (2012-2013) to 1.94 (2014-2015).

One student decreased number of behavioral referrals from 24 (2013-2014) to 0 (2014-2015).

73% of mentees maintained or increased their average GPA from the 2013-2014 school year to the 2014-2015 school year.

14% decrease in the number of teens reporting course failure.

5% decrease in the number of teens reporting school suspensions.

24% decrease in the number of teens reporting failing grades in general.

19% decrease in the number of teens reporting cutting classes.

CYC provides training and technical assistance to our own facilitators as well as to other youth-serving organizations and educators. FUTURE PLANS

Double the capacity of the MAP career-based mentoring program to support 120 students annually. Strengthen parent and student programming that serves families within the King-Irving neighborhood. Increase access and programming in the Youth Exploration Center (YEC) at CYC to respond to community needs. Launch Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) as a strategy to engage older youth in volunteerism and support local Silver Cord programs. Establish an annual fundraising event to build the agency’s endowment.

In May 2014, CYC moved into our current ‘Forever Home’ at 1446 Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway in Des Moines. Along with making the building more sustainable by replacing the 1980 HVAC system with high efficiency units, adding insulation to the roof, and upgrading all lights to LED, we hope to mirror sustainability in our programming and in our community. Here are our plans for FY2015:
