THE PREZ SEZ:
The St. Patrick's day parade is over, "Vegas Vair's" was well represented.
Eight Corvair's including the "Whale" were there. Harry was first out with the movie
star Corvair Chuck with the Whale and Paul with the Corsa stayed for the Car Show.
Here is a list of the members appearing in the parade, in the order of appearance:
Harry G. Ransom
Paul and Lea Green
Jack O’Shea
Jerry and Jan Chocek
Jay Chocek and his friend
Marty and Bertha Katz
Mel Jackson
Chuck and Cynde Hanson
A special thanks to Chuck and his wife for the way they show the Corvair Whale to the
lookers,You would think it was at an "R V " show by the traffic in and out of their Motor
Home.
I talked to one person who was looking for a 65 Corvair to restore. I talked to another
who needs info where to get parts for the Corvair he is building. He didn't think the
Corvair owners would be helpful because it is V8 powered.
I invited both of them to our picnic on April 19th
. I hope to see all of you there.
Vegas Vairs Prez,
Paul Gree

VEGAS VAIRS - CORSA CHAPTER #891
Minutes - Regular Monthly Meeting - March 12, 2014
1. - New President Paul Green called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm.
2. - Members present in alphabetical order included the following: Paul and Vicki Bernardo,
John Charaska, Jerry Chocek, Lea and Paul Green, Chuck Hanson, Vic Howard, Mel Jackson (a
big welcome back), Marty Katz, John Merrick, Jack O'Shea, Harry Ransom, Sylvia Raymark,
and Arlon and Suzan Sibert. Two guests from Arizona were the grandchildren of Ingrid and
Vic Howard. They were Dylan and Emilie Porto. Welcome.
3. - Vic Howard gave the Treasurer's report for Ingrid: our balance is $659.07.
4. - Prez Paul distributed handouts for the upcoming Wild Bill's car show along with route
maps for the Sons of Erin Parade in Henderson on Saturday the 15th.
5. - The parade logistics were reviewed in great detail. We should have at least eight cars
representing both early and late model 'Vairs.
6. - Paul Bernardo volunteered to be the second state required club Director along with Bob
Helt.
7. - Next, much discussion centered upon the upcoming spring picnic. Originally we had
decided upon using Sunset Park. HOWEVER, on Thursday, the day after this meeting Prez
Paul scouted out Sunset and some other parks and determined that none were really viable
choices. He and Lea decided to volunteer to host the picnic AT THEIR HOME instead. Map
to follow.
ALSO, THE PICNIC DATE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO APRIL 19TH!!!!!! ALSO, THE REGULAR
CLUB MEETING FOR APRIL HAS BEEN CANCELLED!!!!!! TAKE NOTE! GOT IT?
Picnic Assignments:
Paul & Lea - Meat and buns and maybe paper plates
John Merrick - Potato salad
Marty Katz - Ambrosia
Paul & Vicki Bernardo - Cole slaw
Mel Jackson - Baked beans and charcoal briquettes
Steve & Sally Wentworth (they were volunteered!) - club paper plate and utensil box
Chuck Hanson - Drinks
****** NOTE, EVERYONE BRING THEIR OWN CHAIRS!!!!!!******
8. - Since few had seemed to notice, I hawked my article in the Communique.
9. - Marty Katz relayed info about a new car show on the Discovery Channel dealing with (wait
for it - - - ) car hoarders. Really.
10. - Prez Paul gave a tech talk on how the length of connecting rods determines the amount
of stress generated on internal combustion engines and the resulting lifespan of those
motors. The stroke length and average rpm range determine the piston feet traveled (swept)
per minute. Corvairs with a tiny 2 15/16" stroke have a low rate just like diesels even though
those oil burners typically have long strokes they also have low rpm levels. Paul distributed
handouts so that we might remember these interesting facts.
11. - At the end of the raffle Mel Jackson won the50/50. Hey dudes, you can't win if you don't
attend the meetings - and, of course, buy tickets.
12. - The formal meeting was adjourned at 7:58 pm though some of us hung around until 9:15
talking about, would you believe, cars?
13. - NOTE: With all the concentrated talk about pending club activities during this
aforementioned meeting a planned statement of thanks was overlooked for our outgoing
president Chuck Hanson. He did a fantastic job during the previous year and our club owes
him a large debt of gratitude. Way to go Chuck. Many, many hanks.
- - - - Minutes submitted by G. Harry Ransom - OUTGOING recording secretary.

RUSS THULEEN’S 1961 SHORTY LOADSIDE
For those who don’t know Russ Thuleen, he lives in Chelsia, Alabama but lived in Las Vegas
many years until, due to his wife’s failing health, he moved to Alabama. Russ was one of the
longtime members of Vegas Vairs and was one of those who were instrumental in re-starting
the club back in the early 2000’s. He has a five acre property with a large garage he uses to
store and restore is collection of Corvairs. This loadside was purchased by him along with Rudy
Scheindt, also a longtime (and present) member of Vegas Vairs. The loadside had a V8 engine
which Rudy took and Russ took the truck.
Russ has “restored” the truck to a Corvair powered vehicle and as you can see has made it a
patriotic one. It presently has the Stripes and in a few weeks he plans to put the Stars on it to
make it officially a rolling flag. Russ has taken the truck to various car shows in the Southeast
region of the country.
I thought it would be interesting to see it as it sits now and as Russ sends me photos of it I will
add them to our website.
