Monthly Meeting Minutes For September 9, 2015

1.- The Meeting was called to order by President Paul Green at 7:04 pm.

2.- 26 people attended including 3 guests. Our visitors included Sally Wentworth's sister Mary Bryant and the familiar faces of Scott and Mila

George. The Georges own a '63 Monza.

3.- Vic Howard reported a treasury balance of $643.95. 4.- Newsletter editor Vic suggested that future editions of the club

publication be sent out strictly via e-mail with no more hard copy

mailings. It IS the 21st. century folks! 5.- Happenings at the huge Hot August Nights event in the Reno/Sparks/

Carson City area were relayed by Marty Katz, Paul Bernardo, Jerry Chocek, and Harry Ransom.

6.- Major upcoming activities were outlined by Harry. 7.- Chuck Hanson next reported on the Brianhead, Utah car show where he

won the People's Choice Award (very large plaque) AND $500.00 cash for

the venerable Whale!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 150 cars made the climb to the 10,500

foot show site at the base of the ski lift. 8.- Prez. Paul relayed about an upcoming November open house at his friend's

fabrication shop in Henderson where they are finishing the diesel powered

Bonneville race contender for next year. 9.- The club decided unanimously to hold another Christmas party during the

December meeting. Wrapped gifts for the "White Elephant" exchange should fall into the #10.00 range. 10.- ONCE AGAIN, KEEP IN MIND THAT THE DECEMBER PARTY WILL SERVE

AS OUR LAST FORMAL MEETING IF NO ONE BELLIES UP TO THE BAR AND

VOLUNTEERS TO TAKE OVER THE REIGNS FROM VIC TO PRODUCE THE

CORSA MANDATED MONTHLY NEWSLETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

11.- A discussion then commenced about the road conditions for the "back

country" route to the G.W.F.B.Toss in Palm Springs Oct. 23rd-25th.

12.- Former club president Chuck Hanson was selected as this month's "victim"

to relay his life and interest with Chevy's Corvair. Chuck has entertained quite a "marriage" with the air cooled "Corvette." I'll just relay that he has

owned nine models with his first being a '62 900 that he purchased for a whopping $25.00! He says he can't imagine not owning or driving a Corvair -

especially something as unique as his Ultra Van which sports modern fuel

injection. You-da-man Chuck. 13.- Rob Henderson next outlined his incredible 7,000+ mile odyssey through

Chicago and other points east in his yellow '64 Monza convertible which is his

only car, and thus, his daily driver! Way to go Rob. Fantastic. 14.- Items for sale were next on the agenda. Many folks hawked their wares

including Marty with his "last chance" '63/'64 blue convertible. 15.- Howard Stoner initiated the monthly raffle with Prez. Paul winning big.

16.- The meeting was adjourned at 8:06 pm. whereby the crowd moved out to the

seven Corvairs in the parking lot while enjoying a temperature drop all

FROM THE EDITOR

I would like to remind you that I will no longer be preparing and distributing the newsletter after the December 2015 issue. I did have one member several months ago indicate he may be willing to take it on but I have heard nothing more from him to make the final commitment. I will have been doing this newsletter for six years, add that to the 6 yrs as club president and 3 yrs or so before that as club Treasurer and I think you will see I’ve done my part. It is time for me to just be an active member and time for others to step up to take on more of the club duties. I am more then willing to assist in the transistion as I did not have that from the previous editor. However, several club members did assist me in getting started and have provided articles and advice along the way. Bob Helt, Jack O’Shea and Harry Ransom were the leaders in this regard although others did provide help as well. I thank all of you for your support and encouraging comments along the way.

Santa Clara Utah Car Show

The 18th Annual Red Rocks Car Show took place on September 26 at Santa Clara City

Park, near St George, Utah, and the field of roughly 160 cars included three Corvair

powered vehicles.

Dirty Harry Ransom braved the heat and made the 125 mile drive up from Vegas in Cora,

his '67 two-tone Monza four door, Chuck Hanson rolled in with The Whale, his 1969

UltraVan class A motorhome, powered by the 3.1 liter EFI Corvair engine, and a

mysterious, beautiful red 1962 convertible was also present, but with no entry identification.

In the course of the day, a matching 62 Corvette appeared alongside the aforementioned

convertible, and I discovered that the owner of these also had his 60's red Camaro,

Chevelle, and Impala, all red in color, at the show. The owner, and also key sponsor of the

show, obviously has a penchant for red Chevys, and the '62 vert was in very good company.

At the end of the 100 plus degree day, Happy Harry emerged with the first place trophy for

'60's Stock, while Chuck Hanson's Whale took 2nd place in Specialty Class.

It was a great time, and also good to see long distance Vegas Vairs member Reid

Miermaster at the show.

WHICH CLIP IS THE RIGHT CLIP?

After fifty years of working on Corvairs, I thought that I had seen it all. But a

friend showed me a new problem. He brought over a LM Corvair with a

rough idle. Checking the idle speed and mixture gave somewhat mixed

results and showed nothing conclusive.

Then I noticed that even though the engine was fully warmed up the two

chokes were still slightly closed and causing the fast idle cam to engage the

idle speed. There was the problem. But why? A closer inspection found that

the wrong clip holding the choke rod into the choke lever arm was

installed….on both carburetors.

The first photo shows how the wrong clip contacts the choke lever arm

preventing it from opening completely.

The second photo shows the two types of clips. The upper clip is the wrong

one. The lower clip is the correct one.

Photo 3 shows the correct installation.

This photo was taken with the choke mostly closed. Notice that the top part

of the clip is contacting the choke arm. Now when the choke rod is pulled

down as the engine warms up, the choke arm will rotate clockwise in this

view and the top of the clip will hit the arm and prevent full movement of

the choke arm keeping the choke partially closed.

Two different types of clips. The one at the bottom of the photo is

the correct one to use.

This is the correct installation of the clip.
