The paragraphs below are part of a paper I wrote a few
years ago during the Presbyterys CRE program I have
brought them out before to share with the
congregation but I find it appropriate to review these
words once again before we come together for our
Maundy Thursday service When we gather as a
community on the night that recalls the Last Supper we
will once again find ourselves together as disciples at the
table of the Lord anticipating both the misery and the
joy of the days to follow We should remember what
occurred that night and what those events have come
to mean to the church in the years after the
Resurrection
We take communion in recognition of the covenant
made to us by God through Jesus Christ which is the
very foundation of our faith During every communion
service we quote the words of Jesus when he said to his
disciples ldquoThis cup is the new covenant sealed in my
blood shed for you for the forgiveness of sinsrdquo It is our
belief in this new covenant that defines us as followers
of Christ it is a promise from God that our sins will be
forgiven in the shedding of Christrsquos blood We partake in
the Lordrsquos Supper as ldquothe sign and seal of eating and
drinking in communion with the crucified and risen
Lordrdquo because Jesus ldquocommended breaking bread and
sharing a cup to remember and proclaim his deathrdquo (The
Book of Order Presbyterian Church USA Directory for
Worship W-20000) As we are also Disciples of Christ
we break bread and share a cup together in worship
service to remember Christ and proclaim his death and
the good news of his resurrection
Remembering the sacrifice of Jesus as he commended
and sharing the Lordrsquos Supper together as a
congregation are not just a routine that we go through
a few times a year ldquoDuring his earthly ministry Jesus
shared meals with his followers as a sign of community
and acceptance and as an occasion for his own ministryrdquo
(The Book of Order Presbyterian Church USA Directory
for Worship W-20000) We share the Lordrsquos Supper
also as a community as a sign of acceptance as an
occasion for ministry and in remembrance of him
