things to see and doMohegan Colony Storytelling Festival, August 14

Documentary Series Spotlights Musicians

For the 10th Annual Mohegan Colony Storytelling and Music Festival, audiences will gather ‘round Saturday, August 14, 2010, for an entire day of storytelling and musical entertainment.

The festival is supported by an Arts Alive Grant from ArtsWestchester. These grants are funded by the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts.

This year’s festival kicks off at 12:30pm with a parade, and runs until 10:30pm. The evening’s final performances will feature a selection of ghost stories (from the creepy to the humorous).

Storyteller, producer, and teacher Judith Heineman pioneered the event ten years ago when the Mohegan community struggled with the decision of fixing or tearing down the local schoolhouse and pavilion. To save the structure, Heineman set

out to create an event that would spotlight the historic venue that, once upon a time, featured the likes of Pete Seeger, Paul Robeson, Theodore Bikel, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. “I have to give Judith the credit,” says Ellen Monten, co-producer of the festival whose jazz band “Nostalgia” showcased the very first year and will return this anniversary for a reprise. “It is her desire and energy that keeps the festival going.”

The event will feature storytellers and musicians with national and international reputations. Featured performers include The Oracle Award-winning storytelling tandem The Storycrafters, Peninnah Schram, Michael Parent, Carol Birch, Karen Chace, and Joy Kelly, among others.

The festival boasts a wonderful range of performances, including everything from Gina Bergamini mesmerizing audiences with her traditional belly

dancing - to Jonathan Kruk returning in costume to share his beloved Hudson Valley tales.

The Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) presents “Sounds of Summer,” a new music documentary series that is sure to indulge music junkies of all genres. From July 1st through August 5th, film goers can expect a multitude of screenings featuring some of the most iconic names in the music industry. “Sounds of Summer” will include documentaries on the Talking Heads, The Doors, The Beatles, pianist Glenn Gould, as well as more recent groups such as The White Stripes.

The “new” in the series’ title refers to the fact that, of the sixteen films that will be shown during the series, thirteen were made in the last three years.

The "Sounds of Summer" opens on Thursday, July 1st with Eric Darmon’s new film “Steve Reich: Phase to Face,” showcasing Steve Reich, who many consider to be America’s greatest living composer. Reich will be present for a pre-screening Q&A with John Schaefer, WNYC’s producer and host of radio show “New Sounds.”

“Music films have always played well at the Jacob Burns Film Center,” says Adam Leon, Special Events Programmer and one of the creators of “Sounds of Summer.” Leon is especially looking forward to sharing two of his favorites with JBFC audiences. These include “Miroir Noir,” an artistic documentary that captures the essence of the band Arcade Fire, and “Wetlands Preserved: The Story of an Activist Nightclub,” which

tells a nostalgic tale of a neo-hippie rock club featuring concerts and interviews with Dave Mathews and Phish.

Be sure to arrive early to catch some of the most innovative and artistically strong music videos of the last 10 years screening before each film. “The music videos are a nice little addition to the series,” Leon explains. “It puts audiences in the mood for what they are about to see.”

The musically adventurous will also enjoy taking in the off-beat ukulele strains that make up the soundtrack of “Mighty Uke," as well discovering lesser-known Jamaican musicians in “Rise Up.” Adam Leon declares “Rise Up” a must-see of the festival as it was one of the initial films to spark the creation of the entire “Sounds of Summer” series.

Dedicated to presenting the highest caliber of independent, documentary, and world cinema to the community, the Jacob Burns Film Center expects nothing less of its documentary presentations. “This is meant to be a fun series,” says Leon. “We hope that audiences have a great summer and rock out.”

For directions, ticket information, and the calendar for the entire “Sounds of Summer” series visit www.burnsfilmcenter.org or call 914-773-7663.
