Keeryong Choi and Cathryn Shilling 6 September – 16 October Keeryong uses techniques inspired by ancient pottery-making to produce vessels which are highly decorative but also rich in meaning. Cathryn makes both sculptural and decorative work inspired by the qualities of glass, especially fluidity and intensity of colour.

Scott Benefield and Jonathan Harris 18 October – 27 November Scott Benefield is inspired by the ancient techniques still used in Murano, Venice. Primarily working with coloured glass canes, he builds his work up using layers of pattern and colour to form wonderful vessels. Jonathan Harris uses Cameo and Graal techniques to layer patterns and imagery in the glass whilst still hot. His classical glass combines these hot glass skills with a love of engraving, creating very distinctive pieces.

Max Lamb and Philippa Beveridge 29 November – 8 January Max Lamb has worked with many well known artists and designers including Thomas Heatherwick, Peter Layton and Danny Lane. He is based at Salt Glass Studios in Norfolk and makes everything from sculpture to domestic pieces. Philippa Beveridge works primarily with architectural glass and sculpture using surface decoration to give her pieces narrative and meaning. Glass is used like a collage building up pattern and text.

Magdalene Odundo Transition II 11 October 2014 – 11 January 2015

Magdalene Odundo is known as one of Britain’s leading artists working in ceramics. In recent years she has explored the potential of glass within her artistic practice, culminating with the installation Transition II, to be shown, for the first time, at National Glass Centre. The installation of one thousand handmade glass forms was developed with the support of James Maskrey, an artist specialising in hot glass and produced in association with Berengo Studio in Murano and Devereux and Huskie Glassworks in Wiltshire. It combines inspiration taken from Ancient Egyptian ear studs, the life sustaining role of the River Nile and the Op Art of Bridget Riley.

Magdalene Odundo Metamorphosis and Transformation 27 September 2014 – 11 January 2015

James Maskrey In His Own Works 20 September 2014 – 4 January 2015

Magdalene Odundo began her exploration of glass during a residency at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington in 2011. It was here, and at Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle, that she created the installation Metamorphosis and Transformation now recreated for display at National Glass Centre. Also drawing on inspiration from the River Nile and the people of East Africa, this work marks a key transition in Magdalene Odundo’s work between her ceramics and her current work in glass.

James Maskrey is a highly skilled and respected artist who works in hot glass. He is based at National Glass Centre where he works as part of a team teaching hot glass making to BA, MA and PhD students. Maskrey has worked with Magdalene Odundo over a period of three years supporting the introduction of glass to her practice. Using a Venetian technique called Filigrana the two artists have worked together to perfect the glass unit used for Transition II in the main gallery. James Maskrey went on to either make or oversee the production of the one thousand units making up the art-work.

Maskrey’s work is included in the collections of the Crafts Council and the Victoria & Albert Museum. Always beautifully executed, his recent work has drawn on his fascination with the Polar explorations of Scott and Shackleton. This exhibition provides the opportunity to enjoy examples of James Maskrey’s own practice.

North Lands Creative Glass Curated in association with James Maskrey 15 September 2014 – 30 August 2015

North Lands Creative Glass was established in Lybster, Caithness on the North East coast of Scotland almost twenty years ago and has come to be known as a centre of excellence for artists working in glass. As well as hosting an annual conference, North Lands Creative Glass offers a series of master classes led by artists of international standing who regularly donate an example of their work to the organisation’s collection. A selection of works from this collection will be shown at National Glass Centre until the end of August 2015.

Little Artists Every Saturday, beginning 13 September

In 2013 National Glass Centre was awarded a grant from the Gillian Dickinson Trust to engage young people with the arts. We worked in partnership with Southwick Neighbourhood Youth Project, Education and Services for People with Autism, Herrington Burn YMCA, Springwell Dene, Portland and Barbara Priestman Academies to deliver a 20 week outreach project to over 130 young people resulting in this exhibition of work. All the ideas, themes and content has been created by the young people with support from professional glass artists Sue Woolhouse, Zoe Garner, Joanne Mitchell and Catherine Forsyth. The exhibition will tour to NGCA in December 2014.
