Join us as we are making a case for Christ

this Lenten season. Both weekend sermons

and Wednesday Lenten services this year are

focusing on the readings of a book study we

are offering this year: The Case for Christ. It

is a longer book compared to the Lenten

studies we have done in previous year but it

may be just what you need at this time of

your faith journey. The biblical texts we

have selected for worship services will

invite us to ask critical questions of our faith

and to find encouraging answers.

Making a Case for Christ

Did Jesus really exist? Did he really do miracles? Is it scientifically possible for him to defy

death? How reliable are the sources, including the Bible, that we have of him? It is a good

thing to ask questions of one’s faith in Jesus. Asking questions with persistence puts us on a

journey, and even if we don’t find the answers we were expecting, the quest for them shapes

us.

The area of Christian Apologetics has been a part of the Christian faith journey from almost

the very beginning. Apologetics means to make a case for something, to use rational

arguments to justify something – in this case: our faith. When Christianity emerged as a new

expression of faith in the 30s AD it had to defend itself, make a case for itself, and for the

One from whom Christianity got its name.

In places where, over time, Christianity became the majority-expression of faith, the need

for apologetics naturally diminished or changed. As we live today in an age in which

following Jesus becomes less of the cultural norm, it is a natural occurrence that new forms

of Apologetics occur.

We are invited to read the book “The Case for Christ” by Lee Strobel this Lenten season

which I consider to be a classical apologetic piece of literature. For some of us this field may

be a “new land” since the majority of us grew up in a time when defending the Christian

faith was not typical since it was often taken for granted.

I wish for us to find God in new ways as we learn about the story of a journalist was making

his own case for Christ. The way how he made a case for Christ may be different from the

way you would do it; but I do want you: Make your own case for Christ and for what it

means to you to follow a crucified and risen savior.

Truly yours,

Pastor Markus

We are officially in the time of Lent. A time where

some change lifestyles for 40 days. A time where

church is every Wednesday. A time where we

contemplate our humanity through the eyes of

Jesus.

This Lent we are reading a captivating book.

Completely different from our contemplative

Advent Study, “The Case For Christ” is one of

questions many of us ask with answers from

biblical and historical experts. The investigation

that the author holds, turned him from Atheist to

Christian. Doesn’t that make you want to read it?!

In this time of Lent, it is important for us to draw

together as a community to embrace our time

together as well as look to our God to see the love

that is exhibited towards us. How will you do that

this Lent?

With God’s love,

Pastor Liz

Health Weekend

Being a greeter at First Church can change a stranger into a

friend, in just a few seconds. Greeting is a wonderful way for

long time members of First Church to meet new members and is

an opportunity for new members to get acquainted with their

congregation.

The current greeters are amazing and dedicated but additional

people are needed to expand the group. Think about joining the

ranks of existing greeters. There are opportunities for greeting

at the 5:30 service on Saturday evenings and the 9:00 or 10:30

services on Sunday.

If you are interested, please sign up on the You Can Count On

Me sheet in the bulletin or add your name to the sign-up sheet

across from the Welcome Desk.

Annual Musical Celebration of Pentecost

The Festival Choir and Orchestra of the First United Methodist Church will present Dan Forrest’s LUX: The Dawn from On

High on May 17, 2020 for the church’s annual musical celebration of Pentecost. This is one of the composer’s newest

(2018) major works, a five-movement work, following in the same vein as his Requiem (2013) and Jubilate Deo (2016),

both of which have previously been presented here at First Church. This masterwork encompasses ancient chant,

shimmering light, unconditional love, heavenly joy, and deep peace in its setting of five texts about Light in darkness. You

won’t want to miss out on this special music presentation, so mark your calendars now, May 17, 2020 for a combined

morning worship service at 10:00.

Your help is needed in order to make this event a success! You are invited to become part of the Festival Choir for this

occasion. Rehearsals have begun, but it isn’t too late to join us. Join us in the choir room at 6:45 on Wednesday

evenings. All who like to sing from high school age through adult are welcome to join in. Please contact Bob Butler,

Director of Music Ministries, if you have any questions.

My name is Denise Anderson. I have been a member

of First Church since 1988. Over the years I have been

involved in many areas of our church such as: Grace,

Sanctuary and Festival Choirs; Volunteer in Mission

Team; Counting Team; Welcome Desk Coordinator;

Caring Ministries Chairperson; and Liturgist; to name a

few. In spring of 2019, I began the path to becoming a

Certified Lay Speaker in the United Methodist Church.

I hope to finish the remaining courses this spring. As

part of this designation, I will be giving the sermon

from time to time. My first sermon in our church was

in December 2019. My second sermon will be during

lent, on Wednesday, April 1st. I am very excited for

this opportunity and hope to see you there!

Women’s Retreat 2020

51 women of First Church enjoyed a fantastic weekend at

Pine Lake United Methodist Camp February 7th-9th for our

annual Women’s Retreat! The weekend focused on the Fruit

of the Spirit and was full of laughter, fellowship, and our

deeper calling from God! Women also had the chance to

learn some sign language, make a prayer bead bracelet,

create 2 different cards, walk a snow-filled prayer walk,

travel on a biblical scavenger hunt, and watch a movie about

grace among many other things. We hope you enjoy some of

our pictures from the weekend!

Based on the our Lenten study book A hard-driving journalist, Lee Strobel was exactly where he

expected to be at work: on top. His award-winning

investigative reporting recently earned him a promotion to legal editor at the Chicago Tribune. But things weren’t going

nearly as well at home where his wife Leslie’s newfound faith

in Christ went against everything Lee believed—or didn’t believe—as an avowed atheist. Utilizing his journalistic and

legal training, Lee begins a quest to debunk the claims of

Christianity in order to save his crumbling marriage. Chasing down the biggest story of his career, Lee comes face-to-face

with unexpected results that could change everything he

knows to be true.

Prayer is one of the greatest gifts one can give to another, but it also provides comfort and strength to those in need. This

meaningful ministry is in its third year and we ask you for your continued support. Each day in 2020 we want a member

of our congregation praying for our pastors, staff, ministries, and members. We invite children, youth, and adults to sign

up under Gift of Prayer for Our Church at www.appfumc.org

We would also like to inform you of other prayer opportunities our church has available. The Prayer Chain is a weekly e-

mail that posts joys and concerns of our congregation who are in need of prayer and support and are shared only with

those who sign up to receive the e-mail. Prayer Cards are located in the Sanctuary and the Chapel. They are available to

write down any prayer requests that you may have and can be dropped in the offertory plate or the prayer boxes located

at the Welcome Desk and outside the Library.

If you have any questions or concerns, need suggestions on what to pray for, or would like to sign up for the Prayer

Chain, please contact Allison Schottmuller at [email protected] or (920) 450-4387.

With Gratitude and Praise

I love the quiet of the early morning! I breathe deeply of all the gifts God has given me as I begin

my day with gratitude. There are birds singing, rabbits munching, a hot cup of coffee to savor, a

warm puppy snuggling on my lap, and work to do for God. I walk to my Prayer & Meditation room

to share myself with God, while soft music plays and candles glow. This is my special time to read

my Devotionals and Bible, talk with God, & most importantly to listen for His words to me.

What is it that God desires of me? Often, its to listen to others with compassion & understanding, to love and encourage

them in their spiritual journey. I must be devoted in sharing my love of Jesus, because my desire is to love others, as

Jesus has proven He loves us. Perhaps my expression of love today will be to help a young mother carrying an infant

with a toddler in tow. Maybe it will be reaching high on the shelf in the grocery store to assist an elderly man. Or, maybe

there’s a friend or family member in need of a listening ear or prayer. I could run an errand for someone, volunteer my

time at a food pantry, or rescue a fellow traveler who ran out of gas or has a flat tire. There are so many ways to reach

out with love to people in our lives and even strangers who God places in our path.

What about you? What are you grateful for? How do you express your gratitude to God and for others?

Talk with God. Listen for His reply. Feel the joy in your heart when your prayers are answered and, praise God for the

answered prayers!

Heavenly Father, Jesus, thank you for your presence in our hearts and messages we receive with love. Thank you for

your continued guidance and for carrying us when we are too weak and too hurt to carry ourselves. Our desire continues

to be, to honor you always and to be in your loving, warm arms in your perpetual glory. Amen.

May God Bless You in Your Spiritual Journey,

Befriender, Jill Kesler

I am grateful for my church family at FUMC, where I was confirmed, married, and my sons

were baptized and confirmed. First Church is my home, the place I come to for my spirit to

be filled with the "food" required to sustain me through good times and difficult times. I am

giving thanks for the spiritual wisdom and understanding God has given me, and as a

Befriender, I am able to reach out to others in need, encouraging them in the peace and joy

found in the Holy Spirit. Father God, let our only aim be to become more and more like

Jesus. Amen. Jill Kesler.

We have the opportunity to introduce you to the Torzala family. Dale Torzala was born and raised in South Milwaukee with

two younger brothers, Tom and Mike. He attended South Milwaukee HS and graduated from UW-Oshkosh with a Bachelor

of Science degree in Operations Management and a Masters of Business Administration. He works at Kimberly-Clark Corp

as a Supply Chain consultant. His hobbies include biking, running, swimming and home improvement projects.

Renee Torzala was born and raised in Manitowoc, graduated from Manitowoc Lincoln HS and UW-Oshkosh with a

Bachelor Degree in Journalism with Advertising/PR emphasis, and an English Minor. She is the Community Relations

Manager at Faith Technologies. She also likes running, hiking, reading and spending time with family. Renee has an older

brother Dan and a twin sister Julie. She regularly volunteers for Bubolz Nature Preserve as well as the Boys & Girls Club,

Riverview Gardens, Lifest, Make a Difference Day and the Warming Shelter. They met in college and were married in 1992

at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Manitowoc.

Daughter Morgan is a junior at UW-Madison studying to be a Physical Therapist. She likes sports, paying the guitar, plays

club basketball for UW-Madison and is a member of Cru (a campus Christian organization). She has volunteered for an

Adapted Fitness program for individuals with special needs, leads Bible study and programs for Cru, and raised funds for

Dessember, an organization that partners with International Justice Mission to fight human trafficking.

Son Justin is a senior at Kimberly HS. He plays piano, composes music and is involved in musical theater and singing in the

choir. Justin is planning to pursue music composition in college and was recently cast as the lead in the school musical

“Chicago” He attended a mission trip to Detroit with the FUMC youth.

The Torzalas joined First Church in 1996 because it had a strong Sunday school program and were referred to First Church

by other members. The Methodist slogan “Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors” really resonated with us then and still

does. It reflects the type of church community that they wanted to be a part of. Renee has served on the Board of Trustees,

and helped with Sunday school programs when the kids were young. She also served as an adult leader for three of the

youth mission trips and also went on a week-long adult mission trip to Iowa. She is currently serving on the Concern &

Action Ministry Team. Dale has served on the Board of Trustees and participates in volunteer activities for the Concern &

Action Ministry Team.

Dale and Renee are currently participating in a Bible study with a small group of friends and are trying to set aside more

time for prayer. Their spiritual journey is constantly evolving as they study and learn among those with different theology

and interpretation of the Bible. Their ultimate wish is for the church to be a safe place for all people to be accepted,

welcomed, loved and treated equally as a blessed child of God. Well said!
