Visitation of Our Lady Church Fourth Sunday of Advent ~ December 19th, 2021
December 19, 2021 Fourth Sunday of Advent 2
4th Sunday of Advent, Year C
Today is the fourth and last Sunday of Advent. This Saturday will ring in the celebration of the
Nativity of the Lord and the Christmas Season. As we get near to Christmas the readings shift to describe
events that immediately preceded Jesus’ birth, as recorded in the Gospel. We are now in Year C of the
Sunday readings, which focuses on St. Luke’s Gospel.
Today we hear about what happened on the day we refer to as the Visitation, when Mary visited her
cousin Elizabeth, which our parish is named after. This event only appears in St. Luke’s Gospel. This is
significant for so many reasons. This is the context of Mary’s great song of praise called the Magnificat,
prayed every evening by priests and religious.
What is notable for us, so close to celebrating the Christmas Season, is that Jesus is at the heart of the
Visitation. It was John the Baptist’s encounter with Jesus that caused him to leap for joy in Elizabeth’s
womb, which made Elizabeth so joyful. Encountering Christ brings transformative joy. We are changed
when we meet Jesus, or at least there is real potential for change. What lacks is us and our receptivity to
grace. God is always there with His life and grace, but are we always open to receive it?
Jesus is at the heart of the Christmas Season. He is the cause of our joy. The music, gifts, and
everything else that comes with the season are to point to the joy that Jesus became one of us. These
things are not ends in themselves. To do so would make us like the secular world that refuses to see why
we do this. The Christian heart of Christmas has been slowly eroded away.
May we never forget the Christian heart of these feasts that we will soon celebrate. May its joy change
our hearts forever. And like Mary, may we never be ashamed to publicly proclaim the greatness of the
Lord.
