VisitingVisiting timesVisitors are welcome on wards between 2pm and 8pm every day, including weekends. This allows consultants to complete ward rounds and for staff to look after patients and care for their needs.

We try to accommodate the needs of friends and families, so in certain circumstances you may be able to arrange a visit outside of these times. For example if your relative or friend is unstable or if death is imminent. Please speak to the nurse in charge of the area if you want to arrange visiting outside of the usual time.

A maximum of two people only are allowed by the bedside at any one time.

Young visitorsChildren are allowed to visit on some wards. You may need to consider whether a child should visit their parent or close relative. If you feel unsure about this, please discuss with the nursing staff, or talk to the child. Young children will need to be supervised while on the ward, and you may wish to bring something to occupy them during the visit.

Our wardsThe wards are locked to protect the safety of both patients and staff. On arrival to the ward you will find an intercom system outside the entrance. Press the buzzer and when someone answers, please say who you are and who you are visiting. Please be patient as you wait, as staff may be busy attending to patients on the ward.

Infection controlInfection control is extremely important. There are a number of waysyou can help us with this:

• Pleasemakesureyoucleanyourhandsonenteringandleavingthe ward by either washing your hands or using the alcohol hand gel placed around the ward

• Pleasedonotbringflowersorplantsintotheward.Flowersandseeds can spread infection to the patients.

Please speak to a member of staff if you have any queries about infection control.

Supporting the patientVisitors are often worried about touching patients who are surrounded by equipment. Their level of consciousness may make communication more difficult but please feel free to talk to, reassure and touch your relative or friend.

Holding their hand will not interfere with their care, and talking about shared experiences of holidays and good times may make you feel better too. Sometimes reading a newspaper or favourite book helps patients. Some relatives find it helpful to be more involved in caring for the patient as they may have done at home. You may be able to help by doing things such as brushing their teeth or massaging or moisturising their hands and feet.

Internet accessWe provide paid Wi-Fi access to the internet. WiFiSPARK is the external supplier.

Communicating with the ward teamMaking enquiriesWe often care for patients with large families and many friends. You can help us by choosing a family member or friend to be the main contact. Although we will do our best to talk to anyone who asks, we suggest that a nominated person contact the ward to get a progress report. They can then pass on information to other family members.

We always aim to give you up-to-date information and answer any questions you may have when you visit your relative or friend.

Please note that staff cannot provide detailed information about your relative or friend over the telephone; this is to protect patient confidentiality.

There are often many different doctors and nurses caring for your relative or friend. There may be small differences in what you hear from different members of our team. If you are concerned by anything you hear, please let us know. Good communication and continuity of care are really important to us when looking after your relative or friend.

A patient’s condition can sometimes change suddenly during the day or night. The ward team will try and keep you informed as much as possible if this happens.

Meeting with the ward teamOn the wards, families of patients will often be invited to meet with membersoftheteam(thismayincludemembersofthePalliativeCare Team) who are looking after their relative to discuss their condition, on-going care and progress.

These meetings are a good opportunity for you to share any concerns you may have about your relative and ask the team questions. Meetings like these may help to reassure you about your relative or friend’s condition, or help to prepare you for what may happen next.

Ifyouneedaletterofsupport(forexample, travel, workorbenefits)because of your relative or friend’s hospital stay, please ask a member of staff who will arrange this for you.

Interpreting servicesIf you speak little or no English and you would prefer things to be explained in a language you are more comfortable with, we can arrange for you to have a professional interpreter. We can offer you interpreting in any language and urgent translations by phone.

Page 6: Visiting a patient at Princess Royal University Hospital … - 673.1 - palliative care...Visiting a patient at Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) 2 Visiting Visiting times Visitors

6

If you need an interpreter or you know someone who does, please contact the ward team in advance so we can arrange this for you.

Making decisionsPatients are sometimes unable to make decisions about their care. They could be unconscious, or it is a side effect of their condition or injury.Ifapatient’sconditionchangesordecisionsneedtobemadeabout their care or treatment, but they are unable to help us make those decisions, the doctors may consult you about how the patient would want to be treated. This may involve continuing or stopping treatment and resuscitation.

Looking after yourselfHaving a relative or friend who is very unwell can be a very traumatic experience. It may effect your emotional and physical health, and cause anxiety, stress and even depression. Therefore, it is essential that you look after yourself as well as your relative or friend.

Visiting a relative or friend in hospital can be very tiring. Taking a break will give you and your relative or friend time to rest.

You may have difficulty sleeping and not feel like eating, but it is important that you continue to eat, drink and rest regularly so that you can care for your relative or friend. You will not be able to provide support if you become overly tired or ill.

It is understandable to be worried about your relative or friend. One of the ward staff will contact you straight away if there is any change in their condition.

Staying overnightWe strongly recommend you go home to try to get some rest, but if your relative or friend is very unstable or getting worse, you may want to stay overnight. Depending on space, we do have folding beds which we may be able to put in your relative or friend’s room. Please speak to staff to check availability.

There are limited visitor washing facilities. We can provide a small comfort pack which contains a toothbrush, shower gel and shampoo. Please speak to a member of staff for further information.

Visitors’ waiting rooms are available for you to use in most of the wards areas.

Not all services in the hospital will be open during the night. Forexample,placestogethotfoodarelimited(seepage9).

If you have had to travel a long distance to get here, you may need accommodation locally. Please speak to a member of the ward team or visit www.kch.nhs.uk

Counselling and support servicesThe experience of coming to hospital can cause many different emotions for patients, relatives, carers and friends. If you are finding it difficult to cope with your relative or friend dying, you may feel that you need some counselling or psychological support. Speak to a member of staff on the ward as they may be able to recommend a local service. Alternatively you can make an appointment with your GP who will be able to assess you and refer you to a specialist.

If you feel unhappy about the way we have handled your concern please talk to the ward manager or matron. Please be reassured that if you do make a complaint, it will in no way affect the quality of care for your relative or friend.
