Morning Arrive on a Thames Clippers boat from central London. Arriving by river is special! Start your day with a wander around the baroque magnificence of the Old Royal Naval College, the Chapel and the lavish wall and ceiling paintings at the Painted Hall.

Mid-morning Amble up the hill in Greenwich Park to the statue of General Wolfe. The panoramic views at the top are well worth it! Visit the beautiful Royal Observatory and stand astride the Meridian Line as you wait for the time ball to drop at 1pm each day.

Lunch Time for a late lunch at Greenwich Tavern, just outside the gates of Greenwich Park.

Afternoon The National Maritime Museum, where you can see Nelson’s Trafalgar uniform and find out about Britain’s amazing maritime history.

Mid-afternoon Just time for a stroll through Greenwich Market – you will want to take home all the beautiful arts and crafts!

Evening Take the Docklands Light Railway back to central London from Cutty Sark station. It only takes 22 minutes and the trains are driverless, so if you get the front seat you can pretend it’s you!

You really can’t see everything Greenwich has got in only one day, so book a room and stay the night. There are fantastic hotels and other accommodation choices to suit everybody and you’ll be relaxed and ready for your sightseeing, shopping and general good time.


If you’ve only got a morning or an afternoon in Greenwich then you need more time! But you can still enjoy yourself, get a feel for the place and plan what you’re going to see the next time you visit.

1 hour Take a stroll through the grounds of the incredible Old Royal Naval College and admire the wonderful architecture. Make sure you take a peek inside the Chapel and the Painted Hall – even if you only take a few minutes you have to see this!

1 hour Off you go up the hill in Greenwich Park to visit the Royal Observatory and stand astride the Meridian Line, with one foot in the western hemisphere and the other in the east. It’s worth going inside too, you’ll see some amazing astronomical and nautical devices.

1 hour Come on back down that hill (it’s much easier going down!) and find your way into the National Maritime Museum for a look around. Make sure you see Nelson’s coat from the battle of Trafalgar.

30 mins Just time for a wander around Greenwich Market. It’s easy to browse for hours here so you’ll need to come back again soon.

That’s it! You’ll need to head off to Greenwich Pier to pick up one of the last City Cruises boats back to central London. There’s so much you’ve missed so come back soon and spend some more time here – it’s really worth it.

Morning Take a relaxed trip down the river from Westminster Pier with City Cruises and get the chance to see a different aspect of London’s landmarks from the river. Arrive at Greenwich Pier and enjoy the amazing architecture of the Old Royal Naval College from the water, then check into your hotel.

Mid-morning Find out all about the history of Greenwich at the Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre and pick up a map and some useful tips at the Tourist Information Centre.

Lunch Grab a light lunch at the Museum Café in the National Maritime Museum then take your time finding out about Britain’s glorious maritime past in the Museum itself.

Afternoon Browse the independent shops and stalls in Greenwich Market. Pick out amazing gifts like the intricate hand drawn panoramic views of Greenwich at Arty Globe.

Late-afternoon Rest your tired feet and try a pint at a riverside pub.

Dinner You’ll find some excellent seasonal British and European cooking at the Rivington Grill and at Inside, two of Greenwich’s favourite restaurants.

Evening Relax at your hotel. It’s going to be another busy day tomorrow!

Morning Get to know Greenwich a bit better with a stroll round the town centre, stopping by St Alfege church, and ending up in the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College.

Mid-morning Coffee at The Old Brewery in the grounds. They brew their own beer here – look around you for the evidence – and don’t miss the Painted Hall!

Welcome yourself aboard Cutty Sark, the fastest tea clipper of her day. You can even walk underneath the ship’s incredible burnished copper hull.

Lunch How about some outstanding street food from Greenwich Market for lunch? Whatever your favourite international cuisine might be, they’re bound to have it here.

Afternoon Climb the hill in Greenwich Park to the Royal Observatory and the Meridian line. Visit the Octagon room and see where our early astronomers watched the skies.

Mid-afternoon Take the short hop on Thames Clippers down to Greenwich Peninsula and a flight on the Emirates Air Line, UK’s first urban cable car. Look at those people climbing over The O2 arena at Up at The O2! Wouldn’t you like to try that?

Evening Of course you would! Suit up in your climbing gear and boots, take a deep breath and take a sunset walk over one of the most recognisable roofs in the world. Truly magical.

There are a wide variety of transport options to get around Greenwich, and some can be unique experiences in themselves.

The Emirates Air Line cable car spans the River Thames between Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks. Connecting with the Docklands Light Railway and the London Underground. It is open seven days a week. The cars are accessible for wheelchair users, pushchairs and cyclists (two bicycles per gondola).

Greenwich town centreGreenwich town centre is a mad and exciting mix of heritage, culture, markets, museums and the river reflecting the future as well as the past. Greenwich Market is at the centre of everything with the stunning buildings of the Old Royal Naval College to its right and the green lungs of Greenwich Park behind. The National Maritime Museum, Royal Observatory and the Queen’s House dot the Park with history and the whole place is a beautiful thing unlike anywhere else in London. Royal historyGreenwich has been a magnet for Royalty for over 500 years – there was a Tudor palace on the riverbank until 1661. Henry VIII was born here, as were his daughters Elizabeth I and Bloody Mary. Henry loved jousting at the palace until he fell off his horse in January 1536 and knocked himself out cold. He was unconscious for over two hours and never jousted again.

In the navyGreenwich has a long maritime tradition which began with the Tudor obsession with ships that could explore the world and bring back booty for the British crown. Sir Francis Drake was a great one for plundering and was knighted by Elizabeth I in Deptford for his efforts, which annoyed Philip of Spain considerably, seeing as Spanish territories bore the brunt of his thievery.

Eccentric villageWandering around Greenwich is always fascinating and often rewarding. Look out for the two cats who like to sleep on top of each other in the window of a house in College Approach, the motto inside the Market, the odd Georgian post-box and the gravestone-filled church gardens. It’s really not a bit like any other part of London.

Space to breathLondon is an incredibly green city with parks and open spaces in almost every other street, and Greenwich is no different. There are places to stretch and breathe across the whole area ranging from small squares and neighbourhood parks to great stretches of nature like Greenwich Park, Woolwich Common, Maryon Wilson Park and the glorious Oxleas Woods. Grab the dog, it’s time to take a walk.

Greenwich PeninsulaIf you take a Thames Clippers catamaran down the river from Greenwich Pier to Greenwich Peninsula you sail forward in time from a centuries old maritime heritage to the 21st century at its brightest. See Attractions on p27 See map on p8-9

Since the former Millennium Dome re-opened as The O2 arena in 2007, other attractions have sprung up to complement the most popular entertainment venue in the world.

The pop, comedy and sports stars that make The O2 rumble can now take a flight across the river in the Emirates Air Line, or walk over the roof of the gigantic venue at Up at The O2. And so can you, of course – there are some absolutely amazing views out across Canary Wharf and the City, and down the river to the Thames Barrier and beyond.

Charlton

Charlton has grown from a tiny Tudor village surrounding the manor house to become home to one of the engineering marvels of the world – the Thames Barrier. See Attractions on p28 & 29 See map on p8-9 Stand next to the Barrier and you can imagine how the vast bulk is able to keep London safe from the unpredictable river and its surging spring tides.

Charlton House, in the village up the hill, past Charlton Athletic football ground, is a gorgeous Jacobean house built in the early 1607-12 and set in pretty grounds. You can visit the tea rooms inside, or wander the parkland and imagine yourself ruffed up and rouged – as all proper Jacobeans were, of course.

1 Open air swimming is available at the Charlton Lido, great for the summer or for the braver in the winter!

2 St. Lukes Church in Charlton has very attractive gravestones and details like this angel head and wings on the door.

3 Home to Charlton Athletic. This family club welcomes all to its stadium – The Valley.

4 Maryon Wilson Animal Park has some more striking inhabitants as well as pigs, sheep, ducks, deer and more – great for little ones and grown-ups alike.

Woolwich

These days Woolwich is a busy and characterful part of London which retains a lively atmosphere. A century ago it was jammed full of workers as the Royal Arsenal, constructed weaponry and ordnance for the war in Europe.

At the height of the First World War the Arsenal employed over 75,000 people doing dirty and dangerous work with metal and high explosives. There were, of course, accidents. The wonderful Greenwich Heritage Centre and Firepower – the Royal Artillery Museum are there now, and the Arsenal itself is reclaimed from its industrial past. You should definitely go and have a look.

Eltham

Stephen and Virginia Courtauld built their outstanding Art Deco house next to the ancient, and mostly ruined, Eltham Palace where Henry VIII spent his childhood and it’s now open to the public so you can compare Medieval with 1930s elegance. See Attractions on p29 See map on p8-9

When you visit you can see the Great Hall, just about all that’s left of the old Palace, and the splendidly decorated house and gardens including Virginia’s really rather indulgent gold-plated bathroom. A little way down the road is the pretty-as-pie Well Hall Pleasaunce, where E Nesbit, author of The Railway Children had a house. Visit for the woodland glen, the ornamental garden and the Wisteria arch. There’s also a Tudor Barn here, one of the few buildings left from nearer Henry’s time, which is now a restaurant and bar. Eltham is easy to reach from Greenwich town centre by bus or from London Bridge by train.

Blackheath

Blackheath stretches across the very top of south east London from Greenwich Park into the cosmopolitan, choc-box-pretty village. It’s often a bit breezy across the Heath so it’s a favourite spot for kite flyers and wind-skateboarders and dashing dogs. See map on p8-9

There’s an exciting urban myth that Blackheath was named that way because it was a plague pit in medieval times! Unfortunately that’s not accurate and it was probably called Blackheath after the colour of the soil, which isn’t nearly as interesting. Today it’s a busy little hub of café-culture and the home of an excellent Sunday Farmer’s Market. From the perfectly English All Saint’s Church opposite the excellently traditional Clarendon Hotel on one side of the village, to the Conservatoire and Blackheath Halls on the other, it’s a gentler and more pacific alternative to the clamour and excitement of Greenwich town centre across the Park.

Stand at the start of time

The Royal Observatory at the pinnacle of Greenwich Park dominates Greenwich, and the Park and Observatory are must-see spots for any Greenwich visitor. Take your time exploring – and say hello to the deer!

Greenwich ParkTake a walk around Greenwich Park, one of London’s oldest Royal Parks and full of beautiful flowers, trees, ancient monuments and glorious places to picnic. Stand next to the statue of General Wolfe and enjoy his view across London – it’s amazing. See p53 for more info

to see the red Time Ball drop

at 1pm Royal Observatory Greenwichpart of Royal Museums GreenwichVisit the Royal Observatory and stand on the Meridian line. John Harrison’s clocks, which set the standard for measuring longitude at sea, tick away here (although they’re at the National Maritime Museum until January 2014) and the red time ball drops at exactly 1pm each day, so that sailors can set their watches.

The Planetarium, next to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park is now the only one in London. Travel to infinity and beyond several times a day at one of the thrilling and enthralling shows for all the family.See p47 for more info

Cutty Sarkpart of Royal Museums GreenwichOne of the things that made Cutty Sark so special was her sleek hull, which sped the ship faster than any other on the tea trade routes to China. Today, unbelievably, you can walk underneath that hull! It looks like it’s made of gold.

Old Royal Naval CollegeOriginally the Royal Hospital for Seamen, the Old Royal Naval College opened to the public in 1997 when the Navy left. The Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre will introduce you to the calm of the Chapel and the stunningly frescoed Painted Hall, which took 18 years to complete.

Standing in line along the banks of the Thames, Cutty Sark and the Old Royal Naval College make arriving in Greenwich by boat especially elegant and impressive. Behind them the National Maritime Museum and Queen’s House hold a treasure trove of naval artefacts and paintings.

Queen’s Housepart of Royal Museums GreenwichThe Queen’s House was originally built for James I’s wife Anne as an apology gift for losing his temper with her when she accidentally shot his favourite hunting dog. Designed by the revolutionary architect Inigo Jones, this perfectly proportioned masterpiece now contains some of the National Maritime Museum’s art collection.

St Alfege ChurchThere’s been a church on the spot where Archbishop of Canterbury Alfege was martyred, for over 1000 years. This St Alfege church is the third one, built after the second began to sink rather gruesomely into the mud produced from digging too many graves!

Eltham PalaceThis Art Deco house, one of the loveliest in the country, was built next to the remains of Henry VIII’s childhood home in the 1930s. Visitors can take a jealous look at the gold-plated bathroom and see

where, unusually, the family lemur used to sleep.

Charlton HouseCharlton House was built in the early 1600s for Sir Adam Newton who tutored Prince Henry, James I’s son. It was used as a hospital during the First World War and bombed during the Second but still stands today, a reminder of Jacobean

architecture at its best.

Every part of London has its secrets – oddball buildings, unusual locations, extraordinary artefacts and mad plans gone haywire in hidden woods and streets. Discover some of ours.

Discover General Wolfe’s BehindTake a look at the back of the statue of General Wolfe in Greenwich Park. Do you see all those little pockmarks and bashes that make it look as if someone’s been at it with a hammer? That‘s shrapnel damage from the Second World War inflicted when a bomb exploded right next to the Royal Observatory. It’s kept as a reminder of those dangerous days and nights.

Queen Elizabeth OakThe remains of a giant Oak tree that grew in Greenwich Park for hundreds of years and sheltered Elizabeth I with its branches. Her father, Henry VIII is also believed to have danced beneath the Oak with Anne Boleyn. In its later life it was used as a lock-up for people who broke Park rules. So watch out. Foot and Mouth

MemorialDown on the river bank near the Cutty Sark pub is a strange little memorial to the animals who died during the Foot and Mouth epidemic of 2001. Built privately in a tiny scrap of garden, and with no fanfare, the memorial is well known to Greenwich locals, but missed by visitors.

Severndroog Castle“A dramatic eighteenth-century gothic tower built by a heartbroken widow in a clearing, high on a hill, in an ancient bluebell wood” That is a very good description of the peculiar Severndroog Castle, a folly in Oxleas Woods, a few miles from Greenwich town centre. It’s been recently renovated, beautifully, so go see it!

Greenwich has been a hotbed of entertainment since the early 19th century, when the disgraceful Greenwich Fair was in full swing. Charles Dickens loved it – “Imagine yourself”, he wrote, “in an extremely dense crowd, which swings you to and fro, and in and out, and every way but the right one”. It’s just like that today!

Hands onThe All Hands gallery at the National Maritime Museum and the Astronomy Centre at the Royal Observatory and Discover Greenwich at the Old Royal Naval College all have plenty to keep kids busy, with maritime and spacey hands-on games and puzzles for all ages. You can even sail a ferry on the giant simulator! Try not to run aground in New York harbour – it’s embarrassing for everyone.

EatingThe first stop for a hungry horde of kids has got to be Greenwich Market and its collection of street food from all over the world. This is the Usain Bolt of fast food and far more fun than McMickeys, or wherever. Try churros, or falafel, or Vietnamese noodles, or big bowls of pasta or sausages on sticks. And they can eat it with their hands! Or try London’s finest Pie and Mash, with liquor (that’s parsley sauce to you) at the century-old Goddards at Greenwich. Take them a bit more upscale to the Rivington Greenwich where kids eat free during the week 12.00-7.00pm!

Emirates Aviation ExperienceThe Emirates Aviation Experience is located at the Greenwich Peninsula Terminal of the Emirates Air Line. The Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval CollegeAdmire the magnificent wall and ceiling paintings, which took Sir James Thornhill 19 years to complete, at this fine dining hall originally used by Greenwich Pensioners and where Nelson lay in state after his death at the Battle of Trafalgar.

The Painted Hall is free to visit and has starred in a number of blockbuster films including Pirates of the Caribbean. The outstanding building sits within the King William Court and is the jewel in the crown of the Old Royal Naval College.

The Chapel at the Old Royal Naval CollegeExperience the tranquillity of this neoclassical Chapel designed by James ‘Athenian’ Stuart. Greenwich Pensioners were obliged to worship here daily and today it hosts a regular Sunday service. Its excellent acoustics make it perfect for concerts and recitals.

The Chapel, completed in 1789 sits opposite the Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College and like the rest of the site is free to visit on daily basis.

Thames River ServicesThames River Services are the oldest established passenger sightseeing company on the Thames. Boats range from the very modern ‘Sarpedon’ to the more traditional ‘Hollywood’.

Tickets can be purchased either online or at Westminster, Embankment, Festival, Bankside, St Katharine’s and Greenwich Piers for boats going to Greenwich and the Thames Flood Barrier or returning to Westminster from Greenwich.

Buy ticketsYou can buy tickets for the Royal Observatory, Cutty Sark and exhibitions at the National Maritime Museum from our staff at the information desk.

Travel ticketsWe sell tickets and Oystercards for travel on tubes, buses, trains, the Docklands Light Railway and Thames Clippers, City Cruises and Thames River Services boats. We also sell Emirates Air Line boarding passes and coach tickets for National Express.

London ticketsSave yourself some time and pick up tickets to some of London’s major visitor attractions including Madame Tussauds, the Tower of London, the London Eye and London bus tours. You can also buy tickets for West End shows.

Guided walksGuided walks around Greenwich leave the Tourist Information Centre every day at 12.15pm and 2.15pm. There are also tickets for half and full day tours of the area including pub tours!

Maps and guidesWe stock a wide range of maps and guides including cycling and walking maps.

Accommodation and accessWe can help you arrange a place to stay in Greenwich and also provide up-to-date information about disabled access accommodation.
