Carson Road. The sound of live music adds to the aesthetically pleasing ambience, and artists’

works can be purchased beginning at 4 p.m. that evening during a live auction.

after St. Jerome, the patron saint of the Pueblo, it was originally a fall trading festival at which

neighboring tribes would gather. After Spanish colonization San Geronimo Day was

institutionalized and incorporated the original rituals with those of the church. Among the

ceremonies that have always been a part of San Geronimo Day are the morning races (around

7:30 a.m.) and the mid-afternoon pole climb. Food and drink vendors are open throughout the

day. No photography is allowed. Parking fee. All times are approximate; for more info, call

(575) 758-1028 or visit the Pueblo's website at taospueblo.com.

Recipes, a Cookbook, edited by Gourmand International award-winning Taos author, Bonnie Lee

Black on Oct. 5. The cookbook features recipes with stories by 84 friends of SOMOS –

storytellers from a variety of backgrounds who love to cook as well as eat. Many will read at the

book launch party and the public is welcome to taste samplings from the recipes.

Finally, on Oct. 6 and 7, the 29th

Annual Taos Wool Festival weaves a 400-year-old wool

tradition into the community as fiber artists and breeders throughout the Southwest gather for a

weekend of fun. The family-friendly event features a handspun yarn show and contest; garment

and home accessory contests; vendor booths; live animals such as llamas, rabbits, alpacas, and

goats; silent auction; demonstrations of shearing, spinning, dyeing and other skills; fleece show;

Then on Aug. 31 from 6:30–8:30 p.m., Taos Youth and Family will also host a “Back to School Teen Dance” for teens ages 13 and older at the Taos Youth and Family Center. Taos Pueblo Tops Budget Travel’s List of ‘Places Every American Should See’

Taos, NM Featured on Fox News, Trip Advisor & Travel Channel

TAOS, NM — One of Taos, New Mexico’s crowned jewels, Taos Pueblo, is at the top of another enviable list, this time being named one of the top ten “Places Every American Should See,” according to national travel magazine, Budget Travel, and as reported by Fox News.com. Budget Travel editors spent weeks narrowing down their top ten list from hundreds of prospective U.S. cities and towns, taking into consideration destinations that were not only historic, but were beautiful, and iconic as well. “The list we arrived at is no American-history textbook quiz ... historic sites are there, along with a sampling of cultural, nostalgic, and guilty-pleasure spots that, we think, evoke the kaleidoscopic American experience,” wrote Budget Travel editor Sean O’Neill. As the article noted, Taos Pueblo contains the largest collection of multi-story pueblo dwellings in the country—well worth its UNESCO World Heritage status—and provides an uncommon insight into the culture of the first Americans. Visitors can witness a ceremonial, traditional dance such as the San Geronimo Day Pole Climbing and morning races on Sept. 29 and 30, 2012 at the Pueblo. San Geronimo, or St. Jerome, is Taos Pueblo’s patron saint. Cameras are not allowed during the event. Parking fees apply. Call 575-758-1028 for more information or visit taospueblo.com. Among the other sights that made the list: Yellowstone National Park, Wyo.; French Quarter in New Orleans, La.; Highway 1 in Calif.; Times Square in N.Y.; Grand Canyon, Ariz.; South Beach in Miami, Fla.; Pearl Harbor in O’ahu, Hawaii; Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas, Nev., and the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The Budget Travel article is available at http://www.budgettravel.com/feature/places-every-american-should-see,8823/ or as mentioned on Fox News.com at http://www.foxnews.com/travel/2012/07/28/20-places-every-american-should-see/. Budget Travel.com receives over 2.5 million page views per month. Fox News.com receives more than 432 million page views per month from nearly 14 million unique visitors. Travel blog, Mike’s Road Trip, named Taos as one of the top ten “Towns Not to be Missed This Summer” in their August edition at mikesroadtrip.com/ten-10-road-trip-towns-2012/. Taos’ thriving art scene, great accommodations, innovative dining options

and unlimited outdoor activities (hot air ballooning, biking, horesback riding, skiing, rafting and more) were mentioned as impressive attractions in the Town. In a recent August episode of the “Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern,” the Greater World Earthship Community was visited and featured when Zimmern ate a meal with ingredients used from an organic Earthship garden. Taos, NM is the headquarters for the Greater World Earthship Community, which are energy-efficient homes, composed mainly of used automobile tires, dirt, recycled aluminum cans and glass bottles. Earthships live “off the grid,” meaning that they are completely self sustaining. The Travel Channel also featured a story on Earthships in 2010. The eco friendly structures also garnered national attention recently after they made TripAdvisor.com’s top ten list of “Quirkiest U.S. Lodging Properties.” TripAdvisor.com called Earthships, “part accommodation, piece of art and science project ... the structure itself is just beautiful, the creativity combined with science is truly amazing.” Average nightly rates for Earthship rentals range from $75 to $295 per night, and most include modern amenities such as television, WI-FI, and on demand movies – all powered by the sun, wind and rain. To read more, visit TripAdvisor.com at http://www.tripadvisor.com/PressCenter-i5296-c1-Press_Releases.html.

To take a tour of an Earthship, visit the Earthship Visitor Center in Taos, located 1.5 miles past the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge on US Highway 64 West. The visitor center is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the summer; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in winter. Self-guided tours are $7; children 12 and under are free. Guided tours for groups of ten or more are $12 per person. Call 575-613-4409 for guided tour. To learn more about Earthships, visit earthship.com or call 575-751-0462. The customized “Taos Alternative Technologies Tour,” offered in Taos, includes a stop at the Greater World Earthship Biotecture community. The 2 day/2 night program is available now through September, and includes a stop at Taos Pueblo among other sustainable living communities. For more information about upcoming events in the Town of Taos, along with self guided and customized tours, visit http://taos.org/ or call 575-751-2001.

Fiber Artists Dyeing to Blast Taos, NM with

Yarn Art Installation Project Before Oct. ‘Wool

Festival’

TAOS, NM — To weave the beauty of fiber arts into the community of Taos, New Mexico, a

group of fiber artists who call themselves “Craftistas” are blasting an array of colors onto

ordinary objects as part of the “Taos Temporary Yarn Art Installation Project” – a yarn

installation project whereby knitters cover light poles, bike racks, benches and common objects

with colorful knit. The Yarn Art Installation Project, also known as “yarn bombing,” will be on

display throughout Taos from Sept. 17 through Oct. 14, 2012.

“Yarn installations (yarn bombing) have been gaining popularity in recent years in various parts

of the country,” said Teresa Loveless, Yarn Art Installation Project organizer and owner of

Weaving Southwest. “We think Taos is perfect for this type of art installation – it is part of New

Mexico's rich fiber history, and is also well know for artwork. Displaying this artwork during the

popular Grand Fall Arts season is just another excuse to visit Taos in one of the most culturally

rich and colorful times of the year.”

According to Loveless, yarn installations range from small – such as by covering just one sign

post – to large – 99 trees by the Blanton Museum in Austin, Texas were covered with yarn.

Knitters from throughout the State will be participating in the installation process, which will be

visible on everything from light posts, sign posts and bike racks to fences, trees, benches and

some businesses in Taos. The knitting will be sewn in a non-invasive fashion which can be easily

removed. Fire hydrants, crosswalk signals and parking meters will not be covered.

After the installation is removed, volunteers will reassemble the yarn into blankets to be donated

to local charities.

The “Taos Temporary Yarn Art Installation Project” is scheduled during the popular 29th annual

Wool Festival – one of the largest annual events in Taos that weaves a 400-year-old wool

tradition into the community as fiber artists and breeders from throughout the Southwest gather

for a weekend of fun.

The Wool Festival, produced by the Mountain Valley Wool Association, takes place Oct. 6 and

7. The family-friendly event features a handspun yarn show and contest; garment and home

accessory contests; vendor booths; live animals such as llamas, rabbits, alpacas, and goats; silent

auction; demonstrations of shearing, spinning, dyeing and other skills; fleece show; and

numerous workshops. Over 40 intense, hands-on workshops are offered during, before and after

the public fair on topics from felting to weaving to spinning. Visit

www(dot)taoswoolfestival(dot)org or call 800-684-0340 for details.

The Taos Fiber Marketplace, now in its second year, will also bring fiber artisans together April

19 through 21, 2013 at the Taos Convention Center for a weekend of classes, workshops, and

booths selling items from artists. Visit http://taosfibermarketplace(dot)com/ for more

information.

For details on the “Taos Temporary Yarn Art Installation Project,” contact Teresa Loveless at

575-758-0433.

The Town of Taos has more weaving studios, knitting groups and fiber artists compared with any

other town or city in the State.

TAOS, NM — Taos Center for the Arts’ (TCA) 12th annual Quick Draw event will now expand beyond the TCA campus to four new sites including: the historic TCA courtyard and Stables Gallery; Bent Street at the John Dunn Shops; LeDoux Street at the Blumenschein Home and Museum on South Plaza; and on Kit Carson Road. The free Quick Draw event takes place on Saturday, Sept. 29 from noon to 3 p.m.

Quick Draw will showcase 30 artists who will create two and three dimensional art in a variety of mediums for art lovers to see. Mediums include: oil paintings, watercolors, acrylics, drawings, mixed media, sculpture, and jewelry. Art lovers will have an opportunity to interact with artists as they work, and be able to purchase the art later that evening.

Art lovers can relax at the TCA courtyard and enjoy musical entertainment while artists complete their work and set up for a live auction of the created pieces in the Encore Gallery of the Taos Community Auditorium that will take place at 4 p.m.

All artists' works created at the sites are for purchase by bid at the spirited auction. Those that wish to attend the auction can find free registration and bidder paddles at the entrance of the Taos Community Auditorium beginning at 3:00 p.m. With bidder paddles comes a reception with wine and cheese and viewing of the auction items.

Proceeds from the auction benefit both the artists and the Taos Center for the Arts. A list of attending artists is available at www.tcataos.org. The TCA is located at 133 Paseo Del Pueblo Norte, Taos, NM just north of the Historic Taos Inn. For information call 575-758-2052.

Taos Art Glass Invitational & Walking on Glass Tour Brings Top Artists to Taos, NM Sept. 14–Oct. 7

TAOS, NM — The Taos Institute for Glass Art (TIGA) continues to attract top artists from the national and international art glass scene to one of the original art colonies in the United States – Taos, New Mexico – many, who will be participating in the fourth biennial Taos Art Glass Invitational and Walking on Glass Tour, Sept. 14 through Oct. 7, 2012. The Taos Art Glass Invitational offers a diverse sampling of artistic excellence along with inspiring experiences through glass art. The premier Invitational Exhibition represents invited artists and top juried artists from around the world. The Walking on Glass Tour features glass art from a variety of galleries that are reflective of Taos as a contemporary glass arts center.

“This prestigious exhibition takes place during the most enchanting time of the year when golden aspens and cottonwoods abound amidst pleasantly warm days and cool nights and all arts in Taos swing into full bloom,” said Delinda VanneBrightyn, Founder and Director of the Invitational, and President of TIGA. “Fall is the time when collectors make Taos a destination. The air is enlivened with the varied hues of fine art and the possibilities of newly found treasures to take home.”

Coinciding with both the Town of Taos’ educational theme, “Remarkable Women of Taos,” and the 50th Anniversary of Studio Art Glass in America, the Invitational will feature a special educational and historical exhibition of artworks and narratives titled, “Bold Women: Translucent Expressions” – artworks from the remarkable women who have pioneered the studio art glass movement in New Mexico. Some of the artists expected in the exhibit are: Mary Shaffer, Emily Brock, Ruth Dobbins, and Lucy Lyons, Elodie Holmes, and Bonnie Duntz-Burke. The exhibition runs from Sept. 14 through Oct. 7. Only in Taos can visitors see a live installation art project unfold, in celebration of ISEA2012‘s Machine Wilderness event. The project called, “Recycling Light,” will take places at TIGA’s studio located at 2010 Salazar Road.

Then on Sept. 28 from 7-10 p.m., get an illuminating look at glassblowers at work as they create their masterpieces live at Taos Plaza during TIGA’s “Light up the Night” event.

For an exclusive and personally guided view of the Invitational, TIGA’s Collectors’ Tour presents a unique opportunity to meet exhibiting artists Sept. 20–23 with ARTOURS . The package includes: making your own glass art; guided tours by Invitational artists; private viewing of Invitational exhibition and private gallery reception; dining with exhibiting artists at Taos’ premier restaurants; and being included in this year's many exclusive, private offerings. Space is limited and reservations should be made before Sept. 5. TIGA recently closed their global call for artists working in glass or glass combined with other mediums. Esteemed juror Ann Landi, writer for Art News and contributing editor for the Wall Street Journal, will be one of two jurors along with Mareen James, owner of Glass Art Magazine and The Flow. Awards will be presented for Best in Show, Juror’s Choice, Collector’s Choice, and Honorable Mention. This year, the studio glass movement celebrates its 50th anniversary. Special events including gallery openings, lectures, demonstrations, workshops, artist studio tours, and unique art experiences are scheduled throughout the Invitational.
