Visitors’ Guide

Welcome to

the

2013 CELC Symposium

Welcome to all of our presenters and participants in the 2013

CELC Symposium. Now that you are here, you may have many

questions not directly related to the presentations.

This guide aims to anticipate some of your questions and to serve

as a quick reference for you. The following pages contain information

on transportation, communication, dining, shopping, and entertainment

options. For those accessing this through a computer, tablet or smart

phone, the Visitors’ Guide includes both internal and external links for

ease in gathering information.

In addition to this Visitors’ Guide, when you arrive at the

symposium, you will receive a copy of Your Quarterly Guide published

by Where Singapore and the Singapore Tourism Board in your

symposium welcome bag. This STB publication contains current

information about events, shopping, dining and other attractions in

Singapore.

At the end of this Visitors’ Guide you will find a brief section on

what to do in the event of an emergency. We would like to suggest that

you take a few minutes to peruse this page. Should you fall ill or need

assistance while you are attending the symposium, please seek out our

representatives at the Hospitality Table located outside of the auditorium

and they will do their best to get you the help you need.

We hope that your time here at the CELC 2013 Symposium is

both professionally and personally enriching.

General Information for Visitors

For those who are visitors to Singapore, welcome! As you may already know,

Singapore is a vibrant multi-racial city-state-country. We hope your stay here is a

pleasant one.

The Singapore Mindset: Singaporeans have achieved a great deal in the last 45

years and while you are here you will enjoy the benefits of their efforts. From the

establishment of a water management system that provides clean tap water for both

residents and visitors, to a network of public transportation that efficiently moves people

around the island, Singapore’s successes reflect the unique values of Singaporeans.

Singapore has a well deserved reputation as a clean city. With this in mind, please be

considerate of the following during your stay here:

1. Treat water as a precious resource, which is not easily replaced.

2. Please ensure that your rubbish finds its way into a dust bin.

3. When in public spaces, please be respectful of those around you and keep your

voices at an appropriate level.

All water flowing from taps is drinkable and on campus you will find water dispensers

which offer both hot and cool water. Please feel free to fill and refill your own water

bottle at these dispensers.

We strongly recommend that, as a visitor, you avail yourself of the public transport

system if you are visiting some of the sites of the city. It is efficient and efficient.

Having stated this, all forms of transportation in Singapore can become quite congested

especially during peak hours. If you do not need to travel during these time frames, try

to avoid them. If you do not have a choice, just keep a positive attitude and remember

that you are experiencing the “real Singapore”. If you are traveling to the airport during

a peak travel period, it is recommended that you leave for the airport a bit early to avoid

traffic and that you refrain from riding the commuter trains or buses with luggage.

As stated previously, Singapore is a multi-racial, multi-cultural society which highly

values harmonious co-existence. While you are here, we encourage you to forge new

friendships with those attending the symposium and enjoy the variety of cultural

exchanges you will have with your fellow participants. Savor the unique encounters

which emerge within this amazingly diverse collection of World English speakers.

Singapore Botanic Gardens The efforts to create the Singapore Botanic

Gardens date back to the time of the early

days of Singapore and Sir Stamford Raffles.

In 1859 the Gardens were established at

their present location and over time they

became the locus of successful horticultural

research. Located within the Gardens is the

National Orchid Garden. While there is a

charge for admission, the fee is nominal and

the beautiful orchids are well worth the

cost.

Exercise

NUS is a great place for outdoor exercising. If you are staying on campus you may wish to use the

athletic field or the footpaths for brisk walking or jogging. There are many stairs and hills that can

assist you in your cardio-workout. Please be mindful to proceed at your own risk. Some of the

roadways are very narrow in NUS and traffic travels at a brisk pace. In addition, the weather here can

serious affect those exercising. Please plan for hydration during and following your workout. Lastly,

for your safety and assistance, we urge you to exercise with a partner.
