Study objective: assess the business value of Vista and Office 2007• To support the evolution of the desktop management strategy

• To provide insight into the most appropriate licensing option (EA, Select Agreement, Software Assurance)

This study assessed the costs and benefits (ROI) of: • Windows Vista

• Software Assurance, including Vista Enterprise features

• MDOP (Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack)

• Office 2007 Professional Plus

• MOSS (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server) 2007

The study was 4 weeks in duration (2 weeks on-site)• Completion of questionnaires

• On-site interviews

• Product demonstrations

• Business benefits workshop

• Analysis/presentation of results

Methodology/approach• Transparent and objective as possible

• Utilized industry-standard techniques/analysis, including 3rd party tools/research (IDC, Gartner, Alinean, Forrester, Wipro, etc.)

7. Analysis

Actual results (e.g. ROI) may be significantly different (higher or

lower) than results estimated in this study

Many of the results are based on estimates (especially for Office

benefits) - very little actual research/customer cost/benefit data

exists for Office

Care was taken to ensure objectivity

• Employee involvement and validation of all aspects of the study

• Use of most appropriate known data, tools, and methodology

Security Development Life Cycle — Microsoft's development process is best in class. Although we still expect some critical security flaws, code quality should be improved.

Windows Services Hardening — Windows services have reduced privileged levels and can only alter necessary parts of the system. This will limit the amount of damage that a service can do if it becomes compromised.

UAC — Our base model assumes that users will continue to run with administrator credentials on their own PCs (removing these credentials is a best practice), but assuming the defaults are used, most applications will run as standard user, and the user will be prompted for elevation when an application needs to run as an administrator. Although many users will always press OK, some exploits will be prevented. Training should include information about these prompts.

Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) — IE7 includes many security improvements, such as antiphishing. It also will run with lower-than-standard user credentials, even when the user has administrator privileges. Since many attacks have historically come through IE, outages should be reduced.

Firewall and Windows Defender Anti-Malware — Both of these are on by default.

Shadow File Copy — This keeps copies of older versions of files. With training, users can restore old versions without doing regular backups.

Address Stack Layout Randomization (ASLR) and Heap Defenses— This technology is built into Windows Vista and randomizes memory areas used to run certain code each time the operating system boots. Previously, attackers could learn what memory areas were used and write attacks specifically against code. ASLR means that an attack against a specific memory address would be successful against some PCs, but not others.

Desktop Search — Integrated desktop search will likely reduce end-user operations.

7. Analysis

UAC — Standard User— Microsoft has fixed many technical issues that prevented organizations from moving their users from standard to administrator under Windows XP. Applications that write to protected areas of the file system or registry that failed under XP will run by writing to virtual areas under Windows Vista. Microsoft also took a fresh look at what a standard user should be able to do (such as change the PC's time zone) and enabled use by nonadministrators. They also created a facility to allow users to install approved printer drivers, which could even enable notebook lockdown. These will all make it easier for users to run with administrator privileges, but there are still some technical issues (there is no way to allow a standard user to do specific tasks that require administrator privileges that the organization has deemed safe), and technology cannot overcome organizational policy and culture where users expect the ability to install software.

Group Policy Objects (GPO) — Microsoft has created more than 600 new GPOs, so more components can be centrally managed.

Central Administration of Firewall — It's possible with GPOs, but companies may not do it, so we do not include it in our base numbers.

BitLocker — Volume encryption (which can also protect data on PC disposal) is only in the Enterprise version of Vista, which requires the purchase of Software Assurance.

Multilingual User Interface (MUI) — The MUI function is only part of Windows Vista Enterprise. MUI enables a multinational company to build a single image for worldwide deployment with all required language interfaces.

Deployment tools — WinPE and Business Desktop Deployment functions are included at no additional charge, but organizations may use other technologies.

Data Protection with Windows BitLocker™ Drive Encryption

• Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption locks out unauthorized users, keeping them from accessing sensitive data and intellectual

property. It achieves this by providing real-time encryption and decryption of all data stored on the hard disk. BitLocker Drive

Encryption helps reduce the security risk if a computer is lost or stolen. It also helps reduce the risk of data being stolen when a

computer is recycled or refurbished.

Four Instances of a Virtual Operating System

• When your organization is using mission-critical applications, it can be costly to rewrite them so that they work with a new

operating system. Virtualization technology is one way you can reduce the costs associated with upgrading your operating

system. Virtualization enables you to run multiple operating systems on a single computer and switch between them as

necessary. To use virtualization, you need a license for each virtual operating system, and these are typically charged

separately. However, Windows Vista Enterprise includes the rights to four virtual operating systems for no additional cost. Now

you can continue to run your applications in their current state on their original operating system while still taking advantage of

the latest improvements and enhancements in Windows Vista Enterprise.

Subsystem for UNIX-Based Applications

• Subsystem for UNIX-Based Applications is a Windows component that provides platform services for UNIX-based applications.

This component makes it easier to integrate Windows and UNIX/Linux environments. By recompiling UNIX-based applications on

Windows, Subsystem for UNIX-Based Applications helps you take advantage of in-house UNIX skills and overcome many

barriers when you move your workloads to the Windows platform.

Worldwide Deployment with Multilingual User Interface

• Multilingual User Interface enables you to configure a single worldwide image by including any user interface language that your

global business operations may need. Windows Vista Enterprise supports multiple language configurations on a desktop, and

you can easily switch between them. A total of 35 languages are available.

Remote Boot for Diskless Workstations

• A diskless workstation runs Windows but does not store the Windows operating system or data locally because it does not have

a hard disk. When you use diskless workstations, you can store data, applications, and the operating system on centralized

storage hardware such as a Storage Area Network (SAN) while still maintaining the local computing characteristics and

experience of a personal computer. Running diskless PCs requires third-party technology in addition to the license provided with

Windows Vista Enterprise.

Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack for Software Assurance

Microsoft SoftGrid

Application

Virtualization

Enables you to deploy software applications that are never installed to

minimize regression testing, yet follow users anywhere, on demand. It turns

Windows applications into centrally managed virtual services that are

delivered to any desktop or laptop client worldwide. It can also be

integrated and managed within Microsoft SMS.

Microsoft Asset

Inventory Service

Reduces application management lifecycle TCO through advanced

software inventory scanning and by translating inventory data for more than

430,000 titles into useful, admin-friendly information. The tool is an easily

administered, Internet hosted service.

Microsoft Advanced

Group Policy

Management

Helps IT take control of the desktop through effective change management

and roll-backs via GPOs and a robust role-based administration and

delegation model.

Microsoft Diagnostics

and Recovery Toolset

Allows you to quickly repair unbootable or locked-out systems, restore lost

data, remove malware from infected systems while the system is safely

offline using existing antivirus software, and diagnose system and network

issues.

Microsoft System

Center Desktop Error

Monitoring

Enables you to proactively manage problems with applications and system

components that crash or cause live PCs to hang. This is an enterprise-

ready, scalable, low-cost deployment solution for granular error filtering and

alerting. It identifies the impact, probable cause and resolution for

failures—making desktops more stable and reliable.
