The purpose and importance of visual identity and brand standards at Selkirk College:

We are all Selkirk College communicators.

Through the stories we tell, we are all communicators and ultimately brand ambas

sadors of Selkirk College.

When we all adhere to the College’s brand standards and visual identity guidelines,

our collective messages become stronger and clearer to our audiences. A consistent

and appropriate public image that is trustworthy, timeless and stable maximizes the

potential of every story that is told about Selkirk College.

To ensure this consistency is delivered, all departments, schools, units and groups are

expected to adhere to the graphic standards in this visual identity and brand guide

line for all internal and external communications including print, electronic, mer

chandise, signage and any branded items.

Elements of the LogoThe Selkirk College logo is constructed using elements of the crest

(using Deep Red: PMS 202 and Gold: PMS 124) and the institutions name (Slate: PMS 417).

Primary LogoThe Selkirk College core logo consists of a shield and a wordmark, which should always

appear together in one of the combinations outlined below. This is the College’s only logo.

It is considered a visual identifier of Selkirk College. This is compared to a major design

element which is available in two formats – horizontal and vertical.

VERTICAL

Restricted for use on College stationery and reports however, on occasion, it can be used in

situations where horizontal space is limited and where an insignia or badge is required.

HORIZONTAL

The primary format, this is for the majority of uses especially where vertical space is

limited and where legibility/name prominence is needed.

CREST

‘SELKIRK’ TO THE LEFT AND ‘COLLEGE’ TO THE RIGHT ARE THE WORDMARK OF THE

CREST TO CREATE FULL LOGO

Logo Size, Spacing and ColourSIZE

The shield element must never be reproduced at less than 0.375” in height. For readibility it

is best to use the horizontal logo at smaller sizes.

.375"

CLEAR SPACE

To ensure the maximum impact of Selkirk College’s logo, in any format, a rectangular clear

space must be left around the logo. The minimum distance around any logo element is

equal to 1.5 x the Capheight of the Wordmark (shown in the blue safe zone below).

COLOUR

The logo may be reproduced in black and white, Cool Grey 11C or reversed out of a solid

colour. If reproducing on a colour background, the reverse version is preferred for contrast.

Logo – Things to Avoid

PLEASE AVOID THE FOLLOWING

The College’s logo is a valuable resource that is a vital visual identifier. The logo must only be

used in a manner that respects the original design. Please DO NOT

 condensed or expanded

(if you need to resize, hold the Shift key whilst resizing)

substitute the wordmark with another typeface

use the logo at too low a resolution

use previous versions of the college logo (such as the coloured tabs or the 50th logo)

add special effects to the logo (such as drop shadow)

change the colour of the logo

reproduce the logo on a background that does not provide adequate contrast

use the logo on a background that results in a clash of colours

Typography

WHY ARE FONTS SO IMPORTANT?

Typography plays an important role in helping to create a distinct

identity. Having consistency in typography is very important. It

ensures that our visual communication materials are always clear

and concise and never cluttered. Good typography that is on

brand helps to convey a professional image.

Not only is the typeface (font) of importance, but also how the

type is used as it is set in the leading, kerning, the case and the

style. Selkirk College has two distinct typefaces:

Milo and Myriad Pro.

Milo is always used in display type: headlines, taglines, oversized

introductory paragraphs and pull quotes. Myriad Pro is used for

body text and small print elements. For body text a good measure

would be 9.5pt/13pt.

In substitute of Milo, Freight Sans Pro (https://typekit.com/

fonts/freightsanspro) is always used in display type, headlines,

taglines and pull quotes on Selkirk College’s website and online

applications. CamingoDos Web (https://typekit.com/fonts/

camingodosweb) is used for italicised oversized introductory

paragraphs. In substitute of Myriad Pro, Calibri is used for all web

body copy and small text elements online.

SUGGESTED TYPOGRAPHIC COMBINATIONS

Selkirk College Entrance Scholarships Provide Financial BoostThe affordability of a close-to-home education is enhanced by the Selkirk College Board of Governors Entrance Scholarships that are available to learners entering this coming Fall. The deadline for applications for the $1,500 awards is March 31.

High school students from around the region starting their post-secondary

journey close to home have the opportunity to benefit financially with a

Selkirk College Entrance Scholarship.

At the start of each academic year, the Selkirk College Board of Governors

presents 40 scholarships to high school students and those attending post-

secondary for the first time. Each scholarship is worth $1,500 and available to

learners who have graduated with a minimum overall average of 75 per cent

on select Grade 11/12 courses who plan to study at college full-time.

2. Introduction message – a medium weighted font in italics

(Milo Medium Italic)

3. Body content – a regular weight font ( Myriad Pro Regular)

Tagline of the LogoThe Selkirk College tagline comes from our mission statement

“Together we build remarkable futures.”

The tagline is used with the logo on posters, letterheads and other material. The tagline has

two designs. The first is in Milo Regular Italics to the left or right of the logo depending

on logo placement. The second is in Milo Extra Bold as a wordmark that is predominantly

applied to recruitment collateral and used in recruitment oriented events.

MOUNTAIN ELEMENT

A mountain graphic was taken from the College crest and applied as a cutout to posters,

ads, social media badges, website and other promotional materials. This graphic speaks

to our region—the Selkirk Mountains—as well as creates an additional visual identifier for

the College. The preferred treatment is for the mountains to be reversed out in white, and

placed as a notch in the bottom right corner of the layout. This has the added visual benefit

of finishing the layout similar to the way a period ends a sentence.

Logo Usage

CORRESPONDENCE CORPORATE STATIONARY

The logo and typography is applied to all corporate stationary.

Shown here are business card, envelope, and letterhead.

EMAIL SIGNATURES

As we engage with our local, provincial, national and international contacts, it is

important to maintain the value of our overall brand. Our standard unit signatures will

identify you as being clearly part of Selkirk College without diluting the brand. The

primary logo should be the only style of logo used in email signatures (see below).

Selkirk College acknowledges the traditional territories of the Sinixt (Lakes), the Syilx

(Okanagan), the Ktunaxa, and the Secwepemc (Shuswap) peoples.

Strategic Plans & Reports Hierarchy

Strategic documents and reports are assigned a visual cover treatment that can

place them where they belong in the hierarchy of the document matrix. These reports

are being shared widely with the broader community. Branding provides a cohesive

look which lends credibility to the message.

Colour – The Corporate Palette

Selkirk College Corporate & Administration colours—burgundy and gold – reflect our

history. These colours are to be used in all corporate and department materials, but are

not intended to limit the choice of colours used in communications in general.

The Neutrals palette is used to compliment both Selkirk College Corporate &

Operations and the school/program extension colours (see The School Palette).

Pantone (PMS) - Pantone swatches are “spot” colours and are used for offset printing.

Offset printing will consist of CMYK (4 colour process) but can also be specific spot colours

(Pantone). For accurate colour standards, refer to the current edition of the PANTONE Colour

Formula Guide. PANTONE® is a registered trademark of Pantone, Inc. Please note that colour

swatches are only accurate when using Pantone spot colours on a printing press. Variations in

paper, coated or uncoated, and tone effect the ink color.

CMYK - When producing full colour documents, CMYK is the standard. This is a four colour

process that uses Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and black (K). This applies to both offset and digital

printing as well as digital colour outputs (desktop printers).

RGB - (Red/Green/Blue) is the standard for the web/screen applications. It can also be used

for six colour large format printing to preserve a larger colour gamut.

Hexadecimal is also the standard for the web/screen applications.

Colour – The School Palette

The Selkirk College School palette allows specific schools and their programs to showcase their individuality

while still adhering to brand guidelines.

Brand Extension – Wordmarks

Brand extension wordmarks consist of the College logo combined with a

wordmark of the faculty, department, division or research unit name. These

wordmarks are intended as visual identifiers, not as department logos.

A note on extension wordmarks: Each extension wordmark has a specific Pantone colour,

but because of the way different printers are calibrated and the way colour will show

up on different types of paper, the wordmarks won’t always reproduce the exact same

colour. The same is true of the way the colour will appear on different computer screens.

ANNUAL TUITION COMPARISON EXAMPLE

Source: Comparisons are based on data collected by the Ministry of Advanced Education, 2018/19 Tuition for BC Public Post-Secondary Institutions.

Promotional Materials – Photography

Images should tell a story and be engaging to the viewer.

They should reflect one of the lists below:

- Diversity and Inclusion

- Learner Success

- Excellence in Education

- Community Development

- Healthy Workplace

- Facilities, Technology and Operations

Photos should be real, natural and direct. Not manipulated

or contrived. The images should be accurate and represent

the Selkirk College experience. Images should not mislead

or falsely represent Selkirk College.

Keep the story of the images personal – a student’s view

of all aspects of college life. Capture authentic moments –

fresh, well-composed, and up to date.

For portraits, the images should be direct and honest with

subjects looking at the camera or slightly off to the side.

For groups of people, they should be interacting with

each other. Show the College as a living, breathing space.

Subjects should be engaged in activity, and should

include distinctive features so that they are not

mistaken as stock photos.

Photos should NOT:

- be out of focus

- poorly exposed

- low resolution

If a photo has a weak composition and does not represent

the professionalism of our brand, we should not use it.

Promotional Materials – Digital Signage

Digital signage at Selkirk College consists of the common area flat-panel tv screens

on campus used for the distribution of information and strategic messaging to the

Selkirk College community. Digital Signage at Selkirk College is intended to provide

campus-wide communication as well as act as an emergency notification system.

The format for digital signage must be 1920 x 1080 pixels and have a resolution no

less than 150 dpi and be created as a jpeg.

Digital signage rotates every 8 seconds so copy must be kept short and easy to

read. Always leave a clear space around the edges of the digital slide so that the

message will remain clearly visible.

Requests from departments and school should consider the following:

- What message are you trying to promote to the campus-wide community?

- Who is your audience?

- What is your key message?

- What is your call to action? Is it impactful enough to capture people’s attention?

- What elements must be included (e.g. logos, wordmarks, photos,

graphic elements)?

There is limited space. To ensure a variety of the messages and announcements are

seen, each school and department may be limited on the number of slides

in rotation.

Promotional Materials – Web Events

Web events are created to promote an event on Selkirk College’s online calendar so

that students, staff and the community are aware of what is taking place on campus.

It is very important to provide relavent information that includes the date, time,

location, any special instructions or established methods for registration.

Web events should be created first as our stategy is to drive traffic to our website as a

valuable source to get all information about campus activities for staff, students and

community.

Web events should have a visual

included in the event listing as well as

any relevant links.

Promotional Materials – Social Media

Social media consists of using Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter as the three main

plateforms for promoting digital content to employees, students, and the community.

Social media makes it easy to spread the word. It is cost-effective and allows Selkirk

College to to present authentic content and engage with a wide range of audiences.

It is a great way to be sustainable and reduce on print waste.

For promoting on certain social media platforms like Facebook, the image used will

contain few words. Any details will be written in the post so that it is searchable online.

This might change depending on the social media platform.

It is important to use #hashtags and direct traffic to selkirk.ca or the respect links.

Instagram Stories

Instagram Stories are used to convey a short-term message as they

appear for 24 hours in the stories feed. They are a great way to promote

an upcoming event or share a series of photos that tell a cohesive

story. They are also valuable in event coverage. Instagram stories. It is

important to have a strong image, use #SelkirkCollege, @SelkirkCollege.

In promotion, have a clear call to action. In all, direct back to selkirk.ca

in a simple easy to follow way. No long URLs as they aren’t clickable on

Instagram. Keep content within the outer icons found in the Instagram

app. For Instagram stories the size should be 1080px x 1920px but they

do not need to be branded.

Instagram

Instagram is the platform for a strong visual image and shorter written

message. Content is used to evoke a positive emotion about Selkirk

College. Use #SelkirkCollege and direct back to selkirk.ca in a simple

easy to follow way. Do not use long URLs because they aren’t clickable

on Instagram. Instagram image size is 1048px x 1048px and images do

not always need to be branded.

Facebook

Facebook is the platform for sharing Selkirk College news and events.

With it’s clickable links and photo album capabilities, it’s the place to

tell a more dynamic story still using #SelkirkCollege and directing to the

website. Branded images are most used here in the size 1200px x 630px.

Images should contain minimal text with details shared in the post.

Promotional Materials – Print

Print materials consist of posters, rackcards, handouts, brochures, postcards,

bookmarks and any other material that can be used for recruitment and

promotional purposes.

Before printing:

- Is the information on the web and social media first?

- How many copies do you think you need?

- How many copies do people actually take?

- How many end up in the garbage?

Environmental Sustainability is one

of Selkirk College’s fundamental

commitments. We are working hard

are moving to an online strategy where

employees, students and community

social media, the events calendar and the

digital signage around campus.
