    on: Optimal Wellness.

    We often hear you talk about OptimalWellness what does this mean to you?Optimal Wellness is a state of being.

    When someone asks How are you?we might reply I feel good we look atwellness as the way we feel, but itisnt about feeling: its about being. Youcan have the physical capacity to dosomething without feeling the energy todo it. For example, this morning I didntfeel like working out at 6:30, but 10minutes into it I felt great. Optimal

    Wellness isnt an arrival, or a destinationpoint. I would define Optimal Wellnesslike this:

    Physically, it is having the vitality andenergy to do the things you need andlove to do.

    Emotionally, it is when our lives arefilled with positive emotions love,gratitude, forgiveness, acceptance. Itsreally an Optimal Wellness response

    you are having to both external andinternal conditions.

    Spiritually, it is being connected to Godand His purposes for your life.

    Optimal Wellness in my opinion is thehighest quality of life a person can liveas it does not depend on external

    conditions or feelings in the way youlive your life. It is internally-driven.

    As our TriVita community knows, weadvocate practicing the 10 Essentialsdaily to help people live more joyful livesthrough better physical, emotional andspiritual health (see page 2). This is thefoundation we use to build OptimalWellness. Optimal Wellness means

    So does Optimal Wellness mean livingthe 10 Essentials?In pursuit of Optimal Wellness, thereshould be a plan a plan for you toreceive something we all need every day.The 10 Essentials are a road map to get

    you to Optimal Wellness. Perhaps this isa huge concept for people to accept butthey are the essentials to wellness. Do

    you realize that 9 of the 10 Essentials areabout nurturing? Of course, its vital forus to receive all the nutrients our phys-ical bodies need; most people do not getthem from food, so that is why we offertargeted nutrition through our nutritional

    products. But the larger question is,How do I nurture myself every day so Ihave the health and wellness to fulfill mylife purposes? The 10 Essentials arethere to guide you.

    Has your idea of wellness changedover the years?Absolutely. My views are much morefocused on the nurturing, emotional sideof wellness now. Ive come to understandthe significant role that positive emotionplays in our wellness, including ourphysical wellness. For example, if yourlife is filled with anger or hostility, thiscreates a chemical imbalance in thebody. It weakens the cells, and sets us up

    for illness. Or look at the impact of stress.Stress can lead to overeating, whichleads to obesity, which we know contrib-utes to so many health problems.

    Remember, were not human doings, buthuman beings. Optimal Wellness is aboutfinding and living in that state of beingwhere you nurture yourself.

    How has your experience leading TriVita

    affected your view of wellness?I recognise how challenging it is to leadpeople in changing their attitudes andbehaviours. We in North America havebeen influenced significantly by atreatment mentality: If you have ahealth problem, you go to a doctor andtake a pill. Please understand: I thinkhealthcare professionals are important,

    and provide vital services for us all. Butask almost anyone in the medicalcommunity what the solution is to ourcurrent health crisis, and theyll tell youthat the answer is living healthier: gettingthe nutrients and nurturing that we needphysically, emotionally and spiritually.

    When we live the 10 Essentials, we can

    be internally-driven to make the bestchoices for ourselves. Without the selfnurturing from the 10 Essentials, weremain externally-driven, and subject tooutside influences. Food marketers, forexample, are brilliant at using ourappetites for sugar, salt and fat. But thesethings in excess do not promote OptimalWellness. So, we have to identify some-

    thing thats bigger than those appetites.

    Maybe that something is your childrenor grandchildren, for example. Theyreimportant to you, so youll do the thingsthat give you Optimal Wellness so youcan be with them, doing the things theylove to do while being an example fortheir quality of life.

    setback from time to time, and it isntabout arriving at an ultimate place. Itmeans youre giving yourself the vitalityand energy needed to fulfill your lifepurpose, to optimise your internally-driven life.

    What obstacles to Optimal Wellnessshould we be aware of?Everything centres around attitudes andbehaviours, and how we respond toexternal influences. The key is aware-ness: if were aware of these influences,then we can be internally driven by ourvalues and our purpose.

    What final thoughts would you like toshare about Optimal Wellness?Its not a destination its a journey. Itsnot about feeling its about being. Itsabout being connected to those thingsthat are important in helping you fulfill

    your life purpose. Its about filling yourlife each day with vitality and energyfrom proper nutrients and nurturing, andfeeling connected to God for His purposefor your life. If you have all this, you haveOptimal Wellness.

    You probably know the term seniormoment: suddenly you cantremember your favourite uncles

    name, or where you parked the car.These lapses happen to most of us fromtime to time, especially as we age. Whatsfascinating to me now, though, is thatthese occurrences are affecting people

    much younger than medical scienceused to expect.

    For a long time, medical science hasknown that the human brain changes withage: it literally erodes, or loses volume,over time. Statistics from the 1970s and80s found brain erosion (sometimes upto 25%) only in people over age 50. Justa few years ago, however, a major study

    conducted by Washington University in St.Louis, MO, detected brain volume loss asearly as age 30. And, the researchers alsofound that this brain erosion often leads tomental confusion and memory loss.

    More recently researchers at Wayne StateUniversitys Department of Psychologyadded to this growing body of studieswith another finding: the speed of brain

    erosion, and the brain regions affected,varies widely, even among healthypeople. Although this study didnt lookat the reasons for these variations, Icould make an educated guess thatVitamin B-12 might have been a factor.Its established medical fact that VitaminB-12 plays a big role in mental sharpness,memory, mood and energy.

    Correct a B-12 deficiency, correctmemory loss?No less an authority than HarvardMedical School plainly endorses the useof B-12 to treat memory loss caused by adeficiency of B-12. The prestigious schoolsupports these findings:

    t A lack of Vitamin B-12 can causepermanent damage to brain cells

    t Vitamin B-12 deficiency is among

    the reversible causes of memory loss(along with stress and disease)

    t Addressing B-12 deficiency is atreatment for memory loss

    t Addressing B-12 deficiency early canhelp bring back lost memory function

    t Ignoring B-12 deficiency can worsenmemory loss

    Theres more evidence pointing to thevalue of B-12 in helping protect againstbrain issues among younger people.

    According to the National Institutes ofHealth, one study suggests that B-12deficiency affects a much broader agerange than many have thought.     silently, attentively, completely lost in

    his story. He told about the fruit and

    how it was a blessing from God. He

    talked about how eating the fruit made

    them part of the land, until the people

    and the land were inseparable. He

    talked about the deer and the fox that

    needed to watch over them and protectthem like they were family. When the

    people were sufficiently humbled, it was time for the harvest.

    Angel and his wife instructed the people on how to harvest

    the fruit: Pick only the ones kissed by God (the ripe, ruby

    red fruit at the top of the Nopal plant). These are the ones

    Sonoran Desert, they said.

    Angel spoke of the need of the people to be good stewards

    of the resources and custodians of the animals. He spoke

    about the mummy deer that needed to feed their babies

    mummy foxes that brought their babies to him as if to plead

    with him to leave them some food. As I looked at him, tears

    Anew process has been discoveredfor turning the food we eat intoenergy: exercise. Normally, humans

    turn food into energy through metabolism a Greek word that describes how heatand light are created by burning woodin a fire. Metabolism is an example of

    controlled inflammation: the fire insideyou that turns food into energy. We burnsome of that energy at rest, but we burnmore of it when we exercise.

    Chicken or egg?We need energy to exercise. But now itseems that exercise is itself a source ofenergy. So, the question becomes, do

    fitness fanatics exercise because theyhave a lot of energy, or, does exercisegive our health nut friends the energywe envy?

    As it turns out, the answer to bothquestions is yes!

    We create energy as we burn sugars

    (carbohydrates), protein and fats. Theseare called macronutrients. Each has aburn-rate that supplies us with fuel: sugar

    that will challenge ouremotional health andwell-being. Sometimesthey are many smallfrustrations and disap-pointments, such asstruggling to lose

If you have a hard time goingwith the flow or facing the facts, youmight be putting yourself at risk forserious health problems.

    acceptance is powerful. Its aboutcoming to terms with reality, no matterhow unfair or unpleasant it may be.

    Practicing acceptance can help ease thetension and stress, while allowing us tosee our situations more clearly.

    Release the feeling of powerlessnessIn life you will face circumstances that

    you cannot control. Feeling powerless isactually a control issue. You will need torecognise that there are people, problemsand things that are uncontrollable and

    unchangeable and out of your power tocompletely affect or change.

    When you feel out of control andpowerless, remember that by acceptingwhat IS at the moment, you can rely onGod for strength and power. According toscripture, God is my strength and power:and He makes my way perfect, II Sam22:33. It is not your strength alone, butalso Gods, that enables you to acceptwhat you cannot control or change.

    Relinquish the pain of the pastMany times it is easy to blame ourmisfortune on someone else, saying, If my

    financial advisor had only warned me, Iwouldnt be in this mess. Or, If Susie hadonly told me she was unhappy before it

    was too late, we might still be together.If onlys, dont change the circum-stances. Only you can accept what IS.We cant cry about unpleasant circum-stances and expect them to change.Accepting what IS and deciding tochange your feelings about it creates anatmosphere to help heal your pain.

    Reclaim possibilities throughacceptanceMake this a season of healing and changeas you develop the practice of acceptance.The healing and liberating power ofacceptance comes when you choose toaccept the experience you have had orare having at this moment, no matter whatit is. That doesnt mean we have to behappy with our current circumstances,

    but acceptance means you acknowledgeand accept where you are in life at thismoment. In every problem that we face,no matter how dark it seems, there isopportunity for something magnificentto appear.

    Audrey L. has seen more thanher share of health issues. Aregistered comprehensive nurse,

    this Brisbane resident had to partiallyretire due to deteriorating health over thelast few years.

    I have been suffering with tingling andnumbness on my left side from my neckto my fingertips for many years, saysAudrey. I was unable to sleep on my leftside.     and 60% less likely to be hospitalised ordie from heart failure than those who ate

    less than one serving per week.They found that the women who atechocolate daily and those who ateit weekly experienced comparableheart health benefits. However, moreresearch is needed to explain the resultsof the study.

    low levels of HDL (good) cholesterol.

    t To lower elevated blood glucose levels.

    t Weight loss should be about .5 to 1 kilograms per week

    for a period of six months; after that, base a weight loss

    plan on the amount of weight lost.

    t The combination of a reduced calorie diet and

    increased physical activity is recommended since

    it produces weight loss that may also result in

    decreases in abdominal fat and increases in

    cardiorespiratory fitness.
