A great visionary with his clear head and powerful memory Abinavagupta investigated śāstras most thoroughly on Yoga, Darśana, Tantra, and also on Poetics and Dramaturgy which include the subjects of music, theatre and dance as well. His available writings are the proof of his shrewd eye and a marvellous intellect. His command on language was wonderful. He had a beautiful way of putting forth his ideas in a convincing manner. Abhinava as a polymathic personality exercised strong influence on Indian Art and Culture. Living in Kashmir Abhinavagupta studied all śāstras of his time under the guidance of many teachers. In order to quench his thirst of knowledge he unhesitatingly approached many teachers of various sects/schools which included Jainas, Buddhists, Vaisnavas, Siddhānta Śaivas and finally he went to Trika Śaivas. Among his long list of written works the largest and the most important is Tantraloka. This is an encyclopaedic treatise on all the philosophical and practical aspects of Trika and Kaula schools. These schools are popularly known today as Kashmīr Śaivism. His other important works come to us mostly in the form of commentaries on earlier valuable texts. These include Parātriśikāvivarana on Parātrīśikā, Mālinī-vijaya-vārtika on Mālinīvijayottaratantra, Īśvara-pratyabhijñā-vimarśinī on Īśvara-pratyabhijñā-karika, Īśvara-pratyabhijñā-vivti-vimarśinī on Īśvara-pratyabhijñā-kārikā-vivti, Gītārthasagraha on Bhagavadgītā, Abhinavabhāratī on Nāțyaśāstra, and Locana on Dhvanyāloka. There are many of his other works too, some of which are known only through references as these have not been available to us so far. Abhinava’s stotras are equally very powerful. Abhinava generated a line of scholars whom he taught and who later became great scholars on their own right. They continued the work of their teacher by taking the tradition forward, explaining the śāstras and writing commentaries. Also, the great writers who appeared in the Indian subcontinent after Abhinavagupta were not only influenced by his ideas, they have also referred to his excellence. Abhinava has been quoted extensively as authority in the field of poetics and aesthetics. Modern scholars are well aware of the elements of rich symbolism in his works, universal acceptability of his non-dualistic thought, his creative Pratyabhijñā oriented metaphysical and epistemological ideas. His unique contribution is the universalization through divinization of the outer world. His interpretation of the primacy of action is: kriyā (action) as the Śakti principle, knowledge as action, yogic sādhanā and sublimation in attaining the highest goal of life. All these aspects have played a very significant and creative role in highlighting the dynamism of Indian art and culture. vkpk;Z vfHkuoxqIr lglzkCnh egksRlo dk'ehjh; egkekgsÜoj vkpk;Z vfHkuoxqIr bfUnjk xk¡èkh jk"Vªh; dyk dsUæ lh-oh- esl] tuiFk] uà fnYyh& 110001
