HP StorageWorks 9000 Virtual
Library System - Installing the
VLS9000 7.5 TB and 10 TB systems
WARN
ING:
The node weighs 17.92 kg (39.50 lbs) full. Use caution when lifting anode. The disk array enclosure weighs 33.6 kg (74 lb) full. At least two
people are required to lift, move, and install a disk array enclosure. If you
only have one person to perform the installation, remove the power
modules and disk drives before installing an enclosure. If possible, position the enclosure on top of another device or shelf in the rack to
hold it as you attach all the brackets.
WARN
ING:
To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment, before
installing equipment be sure that:
The rack leveling jacks are extended to the floor. The full weight of the rack rests on the leveling jacks. The stabilizing feet are attached to the rack if it is a single-rack
installation.
The racks are coupled together in multiple-rack installations. Only one component is extended at a time. A rack may become
unstable if more than one component is extended for any reason.
CAUTI
ON:
Make sure that the rack and all equipment mounted in the rack has a
reliable ground connection. Verify that the total current of the rackcomponents does not exceed the current rating of the power distribution
unit or outlet receptacles.
CAUTI
ON:
Parts can be damaged by electrostatic discharge. Keep parts in their
containers until needed. Ensure that you are properly grounded whentouching static sensitive components.
CAUTI
ON:
Once a disk array is added to the VLS, the only way it can be removed
from the VLS configuration (storage pool) is by re-installing the VLS
operating system and then rebuilding the virtual library configurationresulting in loss of data.
Rack mounting requirements
HP supports the HP 10000 Series racks for use with VLS9000. Other racks might
also be suitable, but have not been tested.
If you are installing the node into a telco rack, order the appropriate option kit at
the RackSolutions.com web site:http://www.racksolutions.com/hp. Follow the

instructions on the web site to install the rack brackets.
Each disk array enclosure requires a vertical rack space of 2U (equivalent to 89
mm or 3.5 inches).
Select a rack location that meets the space, airflow, temperature, power, and
electrical grounding requirements described in theHP StorageWorks 9000-seriesVirtual Library System user guide .
Installing PDUs
If the rack you are using already has PDUs (power distribution units) installed,
skip to the next section.
1. Determine the number of PDUs to install. The VLS 7.5 TB and 10 TB systems can expand to up to one full
array (base disk array enclosure and three expansion diskenclosures).

order
VLS9000 7.5 TB and 10 TB systems include one node, one Ethernet switch, and
up to four disk array enclosures.
HP recommends you install the components in the following order:
1. Expansion disk array enclosures (if available) on the bottom of therack
2. Base disk array enclosure above the expansion disk arrayenclosures, or above empty space (reserved for future expansion)
3. Ethernet Switch 2510-24 above the base disk array enclosure4. Node above the Ethernet switch
Installing the base disk array enclosure
Install the base disk array enclosure at the bottom of the rack. If you anticipateadding more storage, reserve space at the bottom of the rack to accommodate up
to three expansion disk array enclosures (2U each), and install the base disk arrayenclosure above the reserved space. This eliminates the need to uninstall and
reinstall the existing components when you expand the system.
Installing cage nuts
1. Locate the cage nuts from the rack mounting hardware kitcontents.
2. Start at rack positions 3 and 4, or above the space reserved forfuture expansion.
3. Install a cage nut in the middle hole of each position on thefront vertical posts for a total of two on each side.
4. On the left front post, between the two cage nuts justinstalled, install a cage nut in the bottom hole.
5. On the right front post, between the two cage nuts justinstalled, install a cage nut in the top hole.
6. On the rear vertical posts, starting at the same rack positions

used on the front, install a cage nut in the middle hole of each
rack position.
Attaching enclosure side brackets to the disk array enclosure
NOTE:The right and left enclosure side brackets are identical. Install the
brackets with the beveled slots facing away from the disk array
enclosure. To attach enclosure side brackets to each side of a disk array enclosure, use two
#8-32 x 3/16-inch flathead screws on each side.
1. Locate the enclosure side brackets and screws from the rackmounting hardware kit contents.
2. Position the enclosure side bracket with the long edge downand the arms flush with the top of the enclosure.
3. Line up the outermost beveled slots of the enclosure sidebracket with the rear holes in the disk array enclosure. Therear arm extends slightly past the back of the enclosure.
4. Install two #8-32 x 3/16-inch flathead screws into the slots.Tighten both screws.
NOTE:Using screws longer than #8-32 x 3/16-inch may result in interfere
with the power supply.
5. Repeat this procedure for the other side bracket.Attaching front and rear rail pieces
To attach the front and rear rail pieces, use three #8-32 x 3/8-inch flathead screws
for each complete rail.
