Variable Message Sign-Trailer, LED

Due to the active performance of the traffic signs, supported by two high intensity warning lights top left and right, motorists pay full attention on danger spots ahead.

This VMS-Trailer can be used for many different applications and can be programmed according to individual needs.

A wide selection of road signs, guiding arrow signs and/or text messages can be programmed, which enables the user to respond to almost all traffic situations.

All signs are displayed by high intensity LEDs, bright and clearly visible.

As messages, i.e. just words, cannot be understood by everybody, the motto „A picture is worth a thousand words“ helps even foreign language speaking motorists to prepare for particular traffic conditions.

Sign selection as well as entire operation of the VMS trailer is very easy via a remote hand set.

The complete display unit, carrying upper- and lower board, is raised/lowered by an electric ac-tuator and also electrically locked in its final position for operation or transportation.

For short term use, i.e. trailer firmly coupled to towing vehicle, it is not always necessary to use jacks. Driver must not leave vehicle, no manual work must be done because entire operation can be done right from the driver’s cab.

Due to the compact body of the trailer it can be moved, even by hand, very easily and towed with normal vehicles. The VMS-Trailer can even be loaded onto other trailers, such as usual warning trailers, etc.

6. Safety instructions

6.1 Manual lowering (in case of power lack)On top of the relay box placed in one of the battery boxes, you will find a push button for ma-nual lowering of the LED board. Manual lowering might be required in case of empty batteries, malfunction of the remote hand set or main control. The manual lowering system has a so called “dead man’s control”, which means that as soon as the push button is released, the motor stops working. Depending on the position of the board, it will be unlocked, lowered and re-locked in transport position during the manual lowering.

In order to avoid harm, make sure that there are no persons or objects within the lowering area.

Additionally you will find another switch as well as an USB- jack on the lid of the relay box. Both are for service purposes.

By means of the switch CPU of the LED board can be switched on independently from the re-mote control.

Via the USB-jack you can connect a PC for service purposes.

6.2 Protect electronics from humidity In order to avoid short circuits, please make sure that the lids of the battery boxes are properly closed (especially during rain!).

10. Basic safety instructions

10.1 Intended useAccording to the guidelines for securing roadworks in Germany, mobile advance warning panels must be installed for roadworks of short durations. Active representation of traffic signs, supported by two long-range directional warning lights (MS 340 halogen / flash) in the upper corners, draw the road users‘ special attention to hazard zones.

Freely programmable LEDs allow the advance warning panels to be used in a diversity of applications.

Mobile advance warning panels for roadworks can be used at a standstill - secured by a parking brake, a supporting wheel, rear struts and stop blocks—or in tandem with a traction unit.

Driving with an upright LED panel is permissible with ball hitch up to 40 km/h (with min. tongue load of 25 Kg), with pintle eye hitch up to max. 80 km/h.The electronic system is used for raising and lowering the LED panel, as well as for locking it in the upright and flat positions.

The LED panel must only be raised or lowered while the vehicle is at a standstill.

The operational safety of the mobile advance warning LED panel is only guaranteed during usage for the intended use. The panel can be deployed year-round at normal wind speeds of up to 50 km/h (at a standstill) on motorways.

10.2 Non-intended use

- Transportation of loads on the LED panel or bottom plate

- Lifting of loads using the LED panel

- Operation or transportation of the LED panel in the unlocked state

- Driving with an upright panel at speeds in excess of 40 km/h

10.3 Faults in the electro-mechanical systemIf an adjustment drive malfunctions turn the main switch to „0“.The fault must only be repaired by authorized, qualified personnel.Never attempt to repair a fault at the deployment site.

10.4 Unauthorized conversions and spare partsConversions or changes to the mobile advance warning LED panel are only allowed following written approval by the manufacturer. To preserve functionality and safety, only original components from the manufacturer must be used when the need for spare parts arises. A use of other parts will annul liability for the related conse-quences.

10.5 Product monitoring In order to be able to continue offering dependable products in future, kindly notify us in the following events:

• Malfunctionofthemobileadvancewarningpanel‘sadjustmentdrivesorelectro-mechanicalsys-tem

• MalfunctionorfailureoftheLEDpanelsorremotecontrol

36 37

11. Special safety instructions

11.1 Ball coupling

After every coupling operation, check whether the trailer tongue is firmly fitted on the towing vehicle‘s tow ball. If coupling is not properly performed, the trailer might detach itself from the towing vehicle and can cause an accident.

Observe a swivelling range of +/- 25° vertically, and +/- 20° horizontally. Exceeding these ranges will overload the components.

Signs of wear

A wear indicator on the coupling handle shows whether or not the wear limit of the towing vehicle‘s tow ball or the trailer‘s coupling tongue has been is reached. For this, attach the tongue to the towing vehicle‘s coupling ball and drive the vehicle combination for about 500 metres.

Durch die Fahrbewegung stellt sich der Kupplungsmechanismus maximal nach. After that, check the degree of wear as follows:

• Ifthegreenareaoftheindicatoronthecouplinghandleisvisibleinthecoupledstatethetowballis still in new condition and trailer tongue‘s wear is within permissible limits.

• Ifthegreenareaoftheindicatoronthecouplinghandleiscompletelycoveredoronlytheredarea of the indicator is visible in the coupled state, immediately inspect the tow ball and the trailer tongue. Replace the worn part immediately.

11.2 Parking brakeWhen parking the trailer, always engage its parking brake. If the trailer is detached from the towing vehicle the trailer must be secured additionally with the two chocks.

The trailer can move back about 25 cm until the full braking force is achieved! Therefore, provide for sufficient clearance when parking

11.3 Breakaway cableThe breakaway cable serves as an emergency brake in addition to the trailer‘s parking brake. For the emergency brake to work properly, it is absolutely necessary to insert the cable into its guide.

The breakaway cable must not be wrapped around the support wheel, otherwise, the emergency brake will not work. Also ensure that the breakaway cable remains sufficiently long during cornering, other-wise, it might come into action inadvertently.

11.4 Height-adjustable towing mechanismCheck for compliance with safety requirements before every journey. In particular, make sure that the toothed washers mesh together without any play, so that driving stability and traffic safety are guaran-teed. Secure the locking lever by means of a cotter pin.Perform height adjustment only via the handle—there is a risk of accident.

If the adjustment drawbar remains set to a fixed coupling height for an ex-tended period of time, fretting corrosion can arise in the joints between the toothed washers and cause them to jam. To prevent this, regularly clean the washer connections (every 6 months) and apply water-repellent grease to them.

11.5 Support wheelDepending on its design, the support wheel is either screwed or clamped to the towing mechanism.

In the case of support wheels with a clamp, make absolutely sure to take the trailer‘s support load into account when loosening the clamp. There is a danger of trapping and collision.

When raising the support wheel in preparation for a journey, ensure the following:

- In the case of lightweight support wheels, the base must be fitted into the pipe‘s groove and rotated firmly upward.

- Automatic support wheels must be collapsed and rotated firmly inward. Pay attention to the wheel‘s position. The wheel and its fixture must not affect the brake linkage mobility.

There is a risk of injury when the support wheel is swung over the support shoe under subjection to load.

11.6 Wheels and tyresThe wheel bolts should be checked regularly for firm fit. After a wheel has been changed, always re-check it for secure fit 500 km later.

Remember that the trailer‘s driving behaviour depends on whether its tyres have been inflated to the correct pressure. The tyre pressure should be checked in the cold state every 2 weeks or so.

The following values apply to the tyres used here:

155 R13C 8PR : 3,50 bar165/80 R13 : 2,60 bar

11.7 Safety mechanismThe main switch is located in the right-hand battery box as viewed in the direction of travel. To switch off the power circuit for the electrical indicators (LED panels, long-range halogen warning lamps, remo-te control) and for the adjustment drives, simply turn the main switch anticlockwise to the „0“ setting.

The electromechanical system is operated by means of a logic control which only reacts while the remote control unit‘s function keys are under pressure. If the operator interrupts the remote control unit‘s key contacts during a movement the LED panel immediately comes to a stop at its current position.

11.8 Special hazards during operation of the mobile advance warning panel Coupling

- Observe the instructions on the tow ball‘s handle.- Open the trailer‘s coupling tongue.- Fit the tongue on the towing vehicle‘s greased tow ball. The tongue should engage audibly.- Pull or rotate up all support elements, and secure them wherever necessary. The support wheel

must face backward and be fully cranked up (automatic wheel) or pulled up (observe the relevant safety instructions).

- Release the hand brake, and attach the breakaway cable to the towing vehicle (observe the rele-vant safety instructions).

- Establish the electrical connections and check the illumination as well as the brake and indicator lights for proper operation.

Each time you have attached the trailer, make absolutely sure to check whether coupling has been properly performed.

38 39

Installation

Caution! Before operating a mobile advance warning panel which has been parked separately, en-gage the parking brake, extend the rear struts and load the support wheel via the height adjustment mechanism to prevent tipping and sliding. On a positive or negative gradient, the stop blocks should be used additionally.

Before putting the facility into operation, remove the remote control unit from the battery box, pull the cable (in the case of cable remote control) through the guide loop on the rear, right-hand hinged brace, roll out the cable and assume a laterally offset position on the right-hand side permitting a view of ap-proaching traffic. This is the only way to avoid accidents with possibly fatal consequences.

To ensure recognition of active traffic signs on the LED panel, a clearance of about 5—8 m behind the panel is required.

When erecting the LED panel in the transition from transport mode to operating mode, maintain a suf-ficient safety clearance due to the risk of loose objects falling down and injuring persons in the vicinity. The LED panel must always be locked in its flat and upright states.

During journeys

If the mobile advance warning panel is to be employed in motion behind a towing vehicle the maximumpermissible speed is with ball hitch up to 40 km/h (with min. tongue load of 25 Kg), with pintle eye hitch up to max. 80 km/h.

In this case, make sure that the LED panel is locked in the upright state (refer to section 1.1 on intended use). Traffic signs should not be changed from the towing vehicle while driving because the signals applied from there cannot be monitored for correctness.

Do not raise or lower the LED panel while driving (refer to section 1.1 on intended use).

Observe available headroom when driving with an upright LED.

Transport height (upper edge): Approximately 1.34 m Operating height (upper edge): Approximately 3.84 m Procedures in the event of a hazard

If an adjustment drive malfunctions, or the lifting / lowering mechanism fails during operation, deac-tivate the electro-mechanical equipment via the main switch in the right-hand battery box. Also de-activate the equipment immediately in the event of other hazards such as smoke emanating from the control device, or after a rear-end collision.

12. Operation

12.1 Safety instructions-> Refer to the basic and special safety instructions in chapters 1 and 2 of this operating manual.

12.2 Requirements concerning operating personnelMobile advance warning panels must only be operated by trained personnel at least 18 years old.

Trained personnel are those who:• havereadandunderstoodtheoperatingmanual

• arefamiliarwithguidelines(RSA)forsafetyatroadworksandregulationsforsafetyduring road maintenance

• havereceivedabriefingfromthemanufactureroranauthorizedparty

The manufacturer is not liable for physical or material damage caused by non-intended use, non-compliance with the operating manual, or non-observance of maintenance instructions.

12.3 Before operationBefore commencing a journey, always make absolutely sure to observe the related check list.

-> The check list is provided at the end of this operating manual (page 46).

12.4 InstallationThe advance warning LED panel must be installed in accordance with applicable guidelines for safety at roadworks and traffic regulations. After parking and alignment (without a towing vehicle), engage the parking brake, place the stop blocks behind the wheels and extend the rear struts.

13. Electro-mechanical faults, troubleshooting and repairAfter every repair, verify its success by conducting a function test.

If the panel does not move when the function keys for raising or lowering the panel are pressed:

-> The batteries are completely discharged Recharge the panel‘s batteries or use the emergency lowering mechanism for the transport mode

-> The power supply is interrupted Check the battery connections Check the fuses.

-> The main switch is off. Ensure that the main switch in the control box is on the „ON-I“ setting.

-> The battery of the wireless remote control unit (if in use) is discharged.

Never attempt to repair a fault at the deployment site. Put the mobile advance warning panel into the transport mode via the adjustment motor‘s manual control element.

There is a risk of short circuit.

Manual operation by means of a hand crankThe hand crank can be used in case of a power failure. Before using the crank, remove the cover for the Allen wrench. The maximum torque for the crank is 16 Nm (at maximum load).

Anmerkung: •Thepowersupplymustbedisconnectedduringmanualoperation.•Whenthedriveisoperatedviathehandcrank,thismustbedonemanuallyorvery

carefully with a machine, otherwise, there is a risk of overloading and damage to the drive.

14. MaintenanceCare and maintenance are essential for preserving proper functionality, particularly in the winter months when environmental factors increase the rate of wear.

Maintenance measures required for the ball coupling, DIN towing eye, overrun mechanism, height-adjustable towing device, axle, brakes, adjustment drive and special equipment (such as electricity ge-nerators) are described in the operating manuals provided by the manufacturers of these components to you. These maintenance measures are therefore not listed again in section 14.1

We recommend that a specialist workshop check the vehicle‘s mechanical, electrical and electronic parts every 1,500 miles or 6 months. However, this does not serve to replace the specified maintenance measures.

Repairs should only be performed at the manufacturer‘s service stations.

14.1 Mechanical maintenance schedule Frequency: 1 = Daily / 2 = Weekly / 3 = Monthly / 4 = Half-yearly / 5 = Yearly / 6 = As required
