Cool ideasDid you know…Comic

A big thank you!

“Worldly good is ebb and flow.” That proverbhangs in the meeting room where our patron,Edy Bucher, has conducted board meetings for somany years. His father, company founder ArnoldBucher, instilled this philosophy into his son.

Edy Bucher joined Bucher & Cie. of Langenthalin 1944, when he was just 20 years old. The sig-nificance of “ebb” was firmly brought home tohim both in the office and while cycling out tomeet customers. At that time, Switzerland wassurrounded by warring nations and productionhad to close down because of a dearth of rawmaterials. And even after the war ended in 1945,shortages meant that the travelling salesman wasstill not able to fully resume his tour of duty inthe company vehicle – a van that had been con-verted to run on charcoal. The little team had tostruggle to keep the firm alive from day to day.The years of deprivation and turmoil left theirmark on the young Edy Bucher, adding that extrasteel and entrepreneurial spirit. To this day, he isknown as a businessman who brings to his work amix of judicious risk-taking and healthy caution.“Who dares wins”. That too is a motto which hasguided the man who was owner and CEO ofMOTOREX for 47 years. Even since Edy Bucherleft the operational side of the business, he hascontinued to provide strategic input at the meet-ings of the Board of Directors, from which he isdue to retire at the end of April 2009.

Our MOTOREX brand, our entry into thelubricants business, the green colour of theMOTOREX barrel, a willingness to invest con-sistently in high-quality staff, in buildings andequipment and in publicity were milestones alongEdy Bucher’s road to success. To the extent thatour company has received acclaim from variousquarters as a “jewel in the crown of Swissindustry”. That is a compliment that should beaddressed first and foremost to our Edy himself.

All of us in the MOTOREX family would like tothank him for devoting such a large part of hislife to the success of our company. We will doour utmost to ensure that it remains a beacon ofsuccess in the world of engineering.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC)

Volatile organic compounds include benzene, alcohols, acetone and propellants such aspropane and butane. They perform various functions, acting as thinners, solubilizersand in drying processes. VOC are among the substances responsible for theformation of low-level ozone.

Since January 1, 2000 Switzerland has imposed an excise taxon every kilogram of VOC. Excise tax proceeds are returned tothe people in the form of a health insurance premium subsidy. This system is intended to encouragethe development of alternative sub-stances to replace harmful VOC.

The latest generation at a glanceThe following three MOTOREX release agents have a particularly successful track record:

the same or even better separation per-formance. Consequently, thin, rapidly bio-degradable base oils or petroleum oils lowin aromatic compounds are seeing greateruse. Conventional solvents subject to VOCexcise taxes have also been greatly reducedor replaced by non-toxic substitutes. This isa relief not just for the environment, butalso for users’ budgets.

When innovative additives with featuresthat include greatly improved air and waterexpulsion are used, the improved surfacequality of the concrete is immediatelyapparent to the eye. This characteristic isof particular importance for fair-faced con-crete elements.

Today’s ever more sophisticated concreterecipes, often containing a multitude ofchemical substances, require a broadknowledge of building chemistry on the partof the release agent producer. For thisreason MOTOREX, in collaboration withconcrete and formwork producers and users, carries out a wide range of laboratory andfield tests. The tried-and-tested product lineis continually updated with new additionsand replacements for old products.

New ingredients and formulasWhere in the past the most common com-mercial release agents used paraffin ornaphthene-based refined petroleum prod-ucts of low to medium viscosity with a highsolvent content, today the trend is visiblytoward lower environmental impact with

Modern release agents: VOC-free winsThe innovative CONFORMand PERAFORM release agents areMOTOREX’s

MOTOREX BOXER 4T SAE 15W/50 was ex-

tensively tested by AC Schnitzer, the quali-

fied BMW tuner from Germany.

Agile boxing: BOXER 4T SAE 15W/50

The BOXER 4T motor oil introduced byMOTOREX two years ago is highly regar-ded among riders of BMW models withfour-valve boxer engines. No wonder, sincethis lubricant ensures balanced thermalcycling and greatly reduced friction in allmoving parts of boxer engines. This maxi-mizes engine performance, minimizes fuelconsumption and prevents premature wear.

Optimum engine speed stabilityguaranteedBikers bore out their engines to achieve anideal balance between the moving massesin a boxer engine. As a result, a highlystable hydrodynamic lubricant film capableof ensuring maximum engine speed stabilityunder all operating conditions is essential. The high-quality Synthetic Performancemotor oil also prevents deposits inside theengine and reduces oil consumption thanksto its low evaporation rate.

Boxer engines require amotor oil with very special characteristics.

MOTOREX nowoffers BOXER 4T SAE 15W/50, a newly formulatedmotor oil

designed specially for all modern BMWboxermodels.

New viscosity and formulaAs of now, MOTOREX BOXER 4T will beexclusively available in SAE 15W/50 visco-sity, making it suitable for all BMW boxerengines, including the popular 1100 and1150 models as well as the latest 1200 ccmulti-valve generation. But that’s not all:the oil’s composition and molecular struc-ture have been further refined and evenbetter attuned to the technical characteris-tics of boxer engines, such as air-oil cooling, the separation of engine and transmissionlubrication and the arrangement of cylin-ders and camshafts.

“Respecting nature” –

the professional fisher-

man’s values make

environmentally safe

ASPEN 4T the clear

choice.

Herons and seagulls

are faithful companions

on the lake. Their reward:

a piece of the unwanted bycatch.

Denis Junod hauls just about anything in

his hardworking pick-up, from fish on ice to

wild pigs to ASPEN fuel.

Thus ASPEN is well-suited to any applica-tion where people work in the direct vicinityof an engine. This consigns headaches fromtoxic emissions to the past once and for all.

Benefits of ASPEN two-stroke(with 2% oil admixture) and ASPENfour-stroke gasoline

• contains only traces of benzene, aromatic compounds, sulfur and olefins• extremely clean, pollutant-freecombustion• very long storage life (open 2 years, closed 10 years)• minimal gasoline vapors• extends engine life• keeps the engine and exhaust clean

ASPEN fuel was devel-oped in the late 1980s inSweden out of concern forforest workers. Since then,

numerous further applications for ASPENhave been found. ASPEN fuels are perfectfor conscientious users who take responsi-bility for their own health and that of theiremployees. A philosophy that’s a perfectmatch for MOTOREX’s own.

nets are being hauled in, and the stationaryengine’s exhaust goes straight into the airthat Junod breathes. A perfect place to useASPEN, as are all outboard engines.

What goes around comes around“Professional fishing is like farming. Every-thing is one big cycle, and whatever goes outwill eventually come back in,” says DenisJunod with conviction. For this reason hedoes what he can to protect nature andwildlife. There is no contradiction here, heinsists, since as a fisherman and hunter helives directly from nature. Fortunately hiswife also has a part-time job, providing asafety net for his family in case his fishingnet should come up empty one day…

MOTOREX ASPEN, a good catchMOTOREX ASPEN is a low-pollutingalkylate fuel. Alkylation is a process inwhich clean gases from the crude oil refin-ing process are compressed and polymerized(small molecules converted to large ones). This produces a very clean fuel which ismade up of only a small number of sub-stances and is therefore naturally free ofhazardous components. The only combus-tion products are carbon dioxide and water.

10

Professional fishermen through and through6:00 a.m. at the fishermen’s hut on Place desPêcheurs in Auvernier on Lake Neuchâtel:Denis Junod is on the way to check his nets, which he set the day before at (to the unini-tiated) random spots at up to 40 meters’depth. “Lake Neuchâtel covers an area ofabout 200 km2 and can be up to 150 metersdeep,” says the fisherman somewhat guard-edly. After all, keeping secrets is as much apart of the fisherman’s life as nets andbrailers. You have to know where to findthem – perch, whitefish, pike, char, laketrout, catfish and all the rest. Junod headsresolutely toward the net buoys. Emptycanisters marked with the fisherman’s namemake the best and cheapest floats.

Professional fishermen, huntersand gatherersDenis Junod has been a professional fisher-man for 37 years. It was his father André,who took up fishing as a “professionalhobby” on retiring from a career as a watch-maker, who inspired him to go pro. He’snever regretted it – even if success at timesmeans just making ends meet from his earn-ings… Life as a professional fisherman islike the waves, “sometimes it’s up and thenit’s down.” The lake is a perfect place forpondering and philosophizing. You can see

it in the 57-year-old Junod, whose own sur-face is anything but calm — he is restless, follows his instincts, an ever-alert hunterand gatherer. Once he’s done his day’s fish-ing, he can often be found in Neuchâtel’sabundant forests if the season is right.Collecting mushrooms is yet another ofhis favorite activities. During morel season, the weather is never too rainy for a day offoraying.

Technical helpers lend a handNo, there’s no sign of high tech on thisboat. The 80 hp Yamaha four-stroke out-board engine is nearly silent but verypowerful. Junod performs minor repairand oil changes on the barely two-year-old engine himself, using MOTOREXMARINE LINE products. He and his sonOlivier, who apprenticed as a mechanic andis now also a professional fisherman, havebuilt two hydraulic power blocks, one foreach man. A small four-stroke onboard sta-tionary engine drives a hydraulic pump thatturns the blocks with hydrostatic power.“Not a bad idea,” says the father with pridein his son’s achievement. The engine isfueled by exceptionally environmentallyfriendly and low-emission MOTOREXASPEN 4T. The boat stands still while the

Themen of the Junod family – 87-year-old

grandfather André, father Denis and his

son Olivier – have been fishing Lake

Neuchâtel for three generations. All three

share the same love of nature.

The hydraulic power block makes short

work of hauling in the 100-meter long,

four-meter high nets.

The catch in spring is typically small.

No cause for worry –

summer’s on its way.

Over 100 automatic lathes produce tiny,

complex high-precision parts for the watch

industry – a ZWAHLEN SA specialty.

The four 1000-liter tanks are connected

by chrome steel pipes to several dispensing

stations in the machine room.

Well-integrated: MOTOREX EASYTANK

MOTOREX’s innovative EASYTANK

supply solution has been a firm part

of the lubricantsmarket for over

two years now.We spoke to Serge

Zwahlen, director of precision turning

company ZWAHLEN SA, about their

experience with the system.

ZWAHLEN SA is a family business found-ed in 1974. Its current production site is inCourt near Moutier. Over the years, theproducer of high-precision micro-turnedparts has found a secure place as a supplierto renowned watchmakers. The companyprimarily produces components from barswith a diameter of 1 – 3mm. Just overtwenty employees put their deftness andskill on daily display in every area.

The machine room houses over a hundredautomatic lathes of differing ages. Many ofthem are cam-controlled and repeat thesame work steps thousands of times. Theiroutput often consists of precision partsbarely visible to the eye.

MOTOREX magazine: “Mr Zwahlen, the cellarof your factory houses four central tanksthat each hold 1000 liters of metalworkingfluid. They’re monitored using fill levelsensors and connected to MOTOREX inLangenthal by the mobile telephone net-work. What was your primary aim in choos-ing the MOTOREX EASYTANK system?”Serge Zwahlen: “We wanted the infrastruc-ture at our current location to match ourneeds exactly. Our main objective for thefluid supply system was to achieve a highlevel of autonomy. We have to be able at all

times to fill several machines at once with, say, fresh cutting oil.”

MOTOREX magazine: “Did you ever havedoubts about the capabilities of the auto-matic resupply system?”Serge Zwahlen: “No. I was glad we finally hada system that would let us avoid the reorder-ing process. Our quality control proceduresare very strict. Every one of the several mil-lion parts we produce a year is individuallyinspected! So we’d rather invest our time inquality assurance.”

MOTOREX magazine: “How are your logisticsexpenses working out?”Serge Zwahlen: “Very well, they’ve declinedquite a bit. For one thing we have pumpingstations right in our machine room. Fresh

oil is pumped to the stations by powerfulelectric gear pumps designed specially forindustrial use. The risk of using the wrongfluid is also sharply reduced.”

MOTOREX magazine: “What does it look likein francs and centimes?”Serge Zwahlen: “Oh, (laughs), that’s a goodquestion! The system has certainly helpedimprove our staff productivity, but I’venever actually done the calculations. Im-proved safety is also definitely a factor frommy perspective as director of the company.Manhandling 200-kg barrels the way weused to was anything but safe. Speaking ofbarrels, since we’ve had the MOTOREXsupply truck pumping refills directly fromtank to tank we’ve had hardly any emptybarrels standing around. That’s somethingI’m personally glad of. Somehow it makesthings look neater right away.”

MOTOREX magazine: “Have you ever had anyproblems with EASYTANK?”Serge Zwahlen: “None worth mentioning, really. (Grins.) If the fill level in any of ourfour product tanks falls below a predefinedminimum of 25%, the fill level sensor sendsa text message to MOTOREX. Shortlythereafter we get a call, or if we prefer an

e-mail, from MOTOREX to set the deliv-ery date. Soon after the system was in-stalled, our first delivery from Langenthalarrived with everything we had ordered. The driver unreeled the fill hose but noticedafter 25 meters that it was a few meters tooshort. He quickly arranged for an extensionthat got the job done.”

MOTOREX magazine: “What’s your final wordon MOTOREX EASYTANK?”Serge Zwahlen: “In my opinion, anyonethinking about the future and planning tobuild a new facility or refurbish an old oneshould consider the EASYTANK system.I’m sure the main factors will be dif-ferent from one case to another. ForZWAHLEN SA it was clearly the rightchoice.”

numerous configuration options.

Successful production at Stryker Spine SA

Parts can be picked up after they are

trimmed off and worked on the back using

the two counter-spindles.

Talking to production facility head Guil-laume Finck, one immediately gets a senseof Stryker Spine SA’s passion for innovation.Innovation at Stryker Spine begins in thedesign phase, is unmistakably present inproduction, and ultimately informs the suc-cessful marketing of the company’s productsas well.

Market demands are intensifying from oneday to the next. And this is true in everyrespect, from the quality of the parts pro-duced to lower follow-on costs. Producingcomplex parts requires several separate workoperations, often on different machines, andtherefore involves multiple tool set-up. Thisextends throughput times and erodes re-peatable precision, thereby substantiallyraising the cost of producing medical de-vices, which after all are not mass-marketproducts.

Stryker Corporation is aworld leader in orthopedic andmedical technology,

A “Formula One” multi-spindle auto-matic lathe“Repetitive precision is an extremely highpriority at Stryker Spine,” Guillaume Finckinforms us during our tour of the plant. Theforward-looking production solution had tobe fast and extremely precise. Stryker Spinefound such a solution in the MultiAlpha8 x 20 from Tornos. This tool has eightmotorized spindles with independentspeeds and has been specially fitted withcombined counter-operation, two program-mable manipulators and an integrated partoutlet unit.

These conditions place enormous demandson the cutting oil. Rapid heat dissipationand an integrated cooling system within theoil circulation system are especially impor-tant factors in maintaining dimensionalprecision. Stryker Spine works to tolerancesof just one micrometer (one-thousandth of amillimetre). A change of just 1°C in thetemperature of the cutting oil would affectthe dimensional precision of the workpiece.

Before giving MOTOREX ORTHO NF-Xthe chance to demonstrate its performancepotential in practice, Stryker Spine meticu-lously tested the universal cutting oil againsta predefined evaluation grid. The measure-ment results from the test piece were highlyencouraging, showing exceptional precision. The chromium-cobalt piece also displayedexcellent surface quality.

As if tailor-made for the MultiAlphaThe benefits of MOTOREX Vmax tech-nology in the formulation of ORTHONF-X are particularly clear on the Multi-Alpha 8x20. The high cutting pressure andideal cutting speed generates heat betweenthe workpiece and the tip of the tool, andthis heat is used to enhance the cutting oil’spressure stability. This is an especially desir-able property in chip-cutting operations. The totally homogenous and stable lubri-cant film between the tool cutting edge andthe workpiece functions as a sort of protec-tive cushion. And the film is only a fewthousandths of a millimeter thick!

A well-rehearsed teamThe people at the La Chaux-de-Fonds pro-duction site know that the job isn’t finishedwith the right choice of infrastructure. Thespecialists at this plant, which holds multiplecertifications, are not only highly efficient inproduction, they also know the importanceof service in support of the product. On-going information exchange, whether withthe machine tool manufacturer or withMOTOREX’s Technical Customer Servicedepartment, furthers continual improve-ment at all levels.

We’ll be glad to provide information on thenew generation of ORTHO cutting oils andon how your company can improve its per-formance.

Stern tube oil for propeller shaftswater out even at high pressure and ifthe shaft shifts a few millimeters axially orradially.

Lubricant film fills the gapThe effectiveness of the stern tube seal ulti-mately depends on the sealing system used.Between the seal ring and the shaft, sterntube oil builds up a thin, highly stable lubri-cant film. This distance is sometimes calledthe seal or lubrication gap. At the sametime, the high pressure load is a challengefor all transmission oil properties. Modernstern tube oils, as they are also produced byMOTOREX, are based on a fully syntheticester, giving them good biodegradabilitycharacteristics. If oil leaks into the seawaterthrough a flaw in the sealing system, it israpidly and completely broken down bynatural microorganisms. This process issupported by the fact that the oil floats onthe surface of the water and is thus exposedto air and light.

A lubricant solution to accompany ship andenvironment on the great voyage into thefuture.

The steel juggernauts of the oceans trans-port goods and passengers from one conti-nent to another with never a pause. At thestern, several meters below the water’s sur-face, each ship is propelled by one or morescrew propellers. The motive power, oftenamounting to several thousand kilowatts, istransmitted by propeller shafts runningthrough the stern tube, a hollow assemblythat forms a direct connection between thesea and the engine room.

High-quality sealing systemsneededA sealing system for oil-lubricated propellershaft bearings keeps seawater out of thestern tube. Conversely, the seal also keepslubricant from leaking into the water or in-ward into the engine room. These seals areusually composed of several shaft seal ringsinstalled in series. Their main function is tohold back the oil at both ends of the shaft. Ifthese sealing systems are worn or degradedby saltwater after lengthy service, stern tubeoil – the oil used to lubricate the propellershaft and its bearings – can leak out.

During operation, positive pressure buildsup inside the stern tube, where the driveshaft passes through and the bearings arelocated. This pressure is needed to keep

MOTOREX inspires in BrazilExactly seven years ago we reported onNico-las Rodrigues’ unstoppable enthusiasm formotocross. Though barely four years oldat the time, the son of the MOTOREXMOTO LINE importer for Brazil was oftenseen on the winners’ podium of the Moto-cross Kids Class.

Today at age 11 Nicolas is still hard to stopand is among the top five in Brazil’s MX 85 ccchampionships. So far he has lived up to hispromise seven years ago to follow in his heroStefan Everts’ footsteps in a career as a pro-fessional motocross racer. For now he attendsschool in Rio de Janeiro and helps his fatherout in the shop. But in his free time you’reguaranteed to find him training on his bike.We wish Nicolas and the whole Rodriguesteam continued success!

Did you know. . .Switzerland is known worldwide for mountains, chocolate, clocks andwatches. Everyone knows that there is only a grain of truth to these clichés.But Switzerland does produce watches of exceptional quality!

In recent years renownedwatchmakers have increasingly started using suchexotic materials as titanium, cobalt-chromium, nickel-free metals andhigh-tensile steels such as 1.4441 (implant grade steel). Phynox and allsorts of precious metals are gaining in importance in the luxury watchsegment. But this extremely wide range of raw materials places increas-ingly stringent demands on cutting fluids. Whether for turning the tiniestparts, milling blanks or grinding and forming cases, MOTOREX’sSWISSLINE is an indispensable part of the Swiss watchmaking successstory.

. . . that leading Swiss watchmakers rely on MOTOREX?
