Introduction
IntroducestudentstotheconceptofalliterationbyrealingaloudAnimaliabyGraemeBase.Ask,"Whatdidyounoticeabouttheanimalnamesandthewordsthattheauthorisusingtodescribethem?"(Thewordsbeginwiththesameletter.)Explainthatthisiscalledalliteration.Tellstudentsthatalliterationisaliterarytoolthatwritersusetoaddemphasistowordsorcreateacertainmoodorrhythmintheirwriting.
Procedure
1.Provideeachstudentwithan“AlphabetAlliteration”pre-writingsheet.2.Instructstudentstoquietlybrainstormatleastoneanimalforeachletterofthealphabet.Givestudents
fiveto10minutestoworkontheirownorinsmallgroups.3.Invitestudentstoraisetheirhandsandsharesomeoftheanimalsfromtheirlists.Encouragestudentsto
listenforanyanimalstheymaywanttoaddtotheirownlists.4.Promptstudentstothinkofdescriptivewordsforeachanimalthatstartwiththesameletterastheani-
mal’sname(e.g.,angryalligator,magnificentmonkey,violetvulture,zanyzebraandsoon).Encouragestudentstobecreativewiththeiradjectives!
Independent Practice
1.Oncestudentsunderstandtheconceptofalliteration,assigneachstudentaletterofthealphabet.Explainthatstudentswillbewritingasentenceaboutananimalwhosenamestartswiththeirletter.
2.Havestudentslookthroughadictionarytofindadditionalwordsthatstartwiththeirassignedletter.Promptthemtolookforverbsaswellasothernounsandadjectives.Instructthemtoaddthenewwordstotheirlists.
3.Giveeachstudentasheetofconstructionpaperandcrayonsormarkers.Challengestudentstowriteasentenceaboutananimalusingalliteration.Encouragestudentstobeasseriousoraswhimsicalastheywant.Forexample,studentscouldwrite“EllietheElephanteatseggplanteveryday,”“Thegiantgiraffegesturesgentlytothegerbil,”or“Thequailwasquietlyquilting.”
4.Instructstudentstowritetheirsentenceonthebottomhalfoftheirpaper.Invitethemtoillustratetheirsentenceonthetophalfoftheirpaper.
5.Bindthepagestogetherinalphabeticalordertocreateaclassbook!
