He felt terrible.

What was Feynman worried about when he was young?

He was worried about being a sissy.

Did Feynman enjoy his first date?

Yes, he did.

Is it polite to say, “Thank you for a lovely evening.”?

Yes, it is a common way to show one’s appreciation after the date.

Reading

After dinner, I got all slicked up and went to Barbara’s house to call for her.

get all slicked up = get completely dressed up

call for her = pick her up

I was nervous.

She wasn’t ready, of course (it’s always like that) so her family had me wait for her in the dining room, where they were eating with friends—a lot of people.

it’s always like that 事情總是那樣 that : Barbara isn’t ready Family: 視為一個整體時,其後動詞用單數形。 T

he family has just moved out.

My family are all well . Next

She wasn’t ready, of course (it’s always like that) so her family had me wait for her in the dining room, where they were eating with friends—a lot of people.

have + O + V/V-en have I’ll have Mary wash the dishes. She had the dirty clothes washed. Next

She wasn’t ready, of course (it’s always like that) so her family had me wait for her in the dining room, where they were eating with friends—a lot of people.

They said things like “Isn’t he cute!” and all kinds of other stuff.

like = such asI eat a lot of fruit, like apples and bananas.

I didn’t feel cute. It was absolutely terrible!

I remember everything about the date. As we walked from her house to the new, little theater in town, we talked about playing the piano.

as = while … As I entered the room, I saw the little b

oy. He whistled as he went along.play the 樂器play the flute/guitar/...

I told her how, when I was younger, they made me learn piano for a while but after six months I was still playing “Dance of the Daisies,” and couldn’t stand it anymore.

when I was younger for a while 有一陣子The man has stood there for a while.

You see, I was worried about being a sissy, and to be stuck for weeks playing “Dance of the Daisies” was too much for me, so I quit.

Eating more natural food is good for your health.too much (for) 太難,太多Reading five books a week is too much for a little kid.

因 to be stuck 與 play 兩個動作同時發生,所以 play 用現在分詞 playing 。We sat there singing the song.

I was so sensitive about being a sissy that it even bothered me when my mother sent me to the market to buy some snacks.

so...that... 太…以至於…Mary was so tired that she went to bed early.

it 為虛主詞,代替後面的 when...snacks 。

We saw the movie, and I walked her back to her home.

It’s polite to walk your girlfriend home after the date.Walk the dog.

I complimented her on the nice, pretty gloves she was wearing.

compliment sb. on sth. The teacher complimented Tom on the good job he had done.

“she was wearing” 句中使用過去進行式,表示「當時正戴著的手套」。 she 前面省略了關係代名詞受格 which 。

Then I said goodnight to her on the doorstep.Barbara said to me, “Thank you for a very lovely evening.” “You’re welcome!” I answered. I felt terrific.

“Thank you for a very lovely evening.” terrific: wonderful

The next time I went out on a date—it was with a different girl—I said goodnight to her, and she said, “Thank you for a very lovely evening.” I didn’t feel quite so terrific.

the next time = the following time 比較 the next time 與 next time :The next time I saw her, she was dancing with a man. ( 已發生 )I’ll finish my story next time.

When I said goodnight to the third girl I took out, she had got her mouth open , ready to speak, and I said, “Thank you for a very lovely evening!” She said, “Thank you—uh—Oh!—Yes—uh, I had a lovely evening, too, thank you!”

got her mouth open 嘴巴張開get + O + Adj 使處於…狀態I’ll get the children ready for school.

Discussion 1:Do you think it is allright to have a boyfriend or girlfriend now? Give your reasons.

Yes

No

Reference answer 1:Yes, I think it is not only all right but also normal to have a boyfriend/girlfriend now. It’s natural for a boy/girl to fall in love with a girl/boy. But, before that, I think we’d better learn how to get along with a boy/girl. We should respect each other.

Reference answer 2:No, I don’t think it’s all right. Once we have boyfriends or girlfriends, we can hardly pay attention to our studies. Then, we may not be able to enter a good college.

2. What do you think a good boyfriend or girlfriend would be like?

Reference answer 1:I think a good boyfriend would be gentle, considerate, and not selfish. He would respect his girlfriend and treat her well.

Reference answer 2:I think a good girlfriend would be independent and not moody. She would care about her boyfriend and treat him well.
