Male Reproductive SystemVocabulary
PubertyPeriod of sexual development during which
males and females become sexually mature, and able to produce children.
Changes include:Voice changesBody shape Emotional changesBody hair
TestesThe two (2) male reproductive glands,
located in the scrotum.
Two main functions1. Produce Sperm2. Produce Testosterone
ScrotumThe external sac of skin in which the testes is
located. The scrotum is responsible for regulating the
temperature of the testes. The temperature within the testes must remain approximately 1°C cooler.
Raise Lower
Sperm needs a lower temperature to function properly.
EpididymisA “J” shaped tube located on the back of each
testis, in which sperm is stored for 2 to 4 days after they are formed.
Sperm also gains the ability to move there.
PenisThe male sex organ through which urine and
sperm leave the body
BladderThe Muscular sac that stores urine until it is
released from the body.
GlansTip of the penis
SemenThick, whitish fluid produced by the male sex
glands.1. Seminal Vesicle2. Prostate Gland3. Cowper's Gland
It transports the sperm
Also acts to decrease the acidity level in the urethra
Vas DeferensOne of the two tubes that carry sperm from
the Epididymis to the Urethra. Vasectomy: This tube is cut to perform a
permanent form of birth control
Seminal VesicleIn males, a pair of glands located near the
bladder that provides 60% of the fluid that makes up semen. Sugary substance that provides energy for the
sperm
Prostate GlandA gland located near the bladder that
provides 35% of the fluid to semen. Common site of cancer in men.
Cowper’s GlandA pair of glands located at the base of the
penis that provides 5% of the fluid to the semen.
A clear fluid that lubricates the urethra, and also reduces the acidity.
UrethraThe tube that passes from the bladder to the
outside of the body. Through which urine, and sperm travel.
RectumLast few inches of the large intestine, in
which feces are held until they are released from the body.
AnusThe opening of the rectum
ForeskinA fold of skin that covers the tip of the penis
CircumcisionSurgical procedure in which the foreskin is
removed from the penis
TestosteroneHormone produced by the testes that affects
the production of spermThe development of secondary male sex
characteristicsAnd the sex drive
EjaculationThe ejection of semen from the penisEjaculate is 90% water. Ejaculate consists
mainly of semen: 60% of the semen arises from the seminal vesicles
35% of the semen comes from the prostate. 5% is of other fluids (Ejacuation is preceded by an emission of 1-2 drops
of alkaline fluid from the Cowper's glands (two small glands beneath the prostate). Its alkalinity neutralizes the acidity that remains in the urethra from recent urination)
