Vocal Integrity is led by mother and son team Maureen andJohn Theaker.

Maureen (ALAM, ANEA, NLP) brings a lifetime’s experienceof voice training. Having trained through the London Academyof Music and Dramatic Art and the New Era Academy,Maureen has created and run a successful speech and dramaschool of her own and has gone on to coach people of allages from every type of background in this work. Her clientshave included individuals, institutions and businesses fromacross the UK. Her approach combines a deeply intuitiveand compassionate understanding of people with a lifetime ofprofessional study in this field.

Since graduating from university in the 80s, John has heldseveral key posts ranging from secondary school teacher toconsultant in the City of London, embracing along the way theroles of economic reformist, conference organiser and nationalcharity leader, and culminating in owning and managing hisown successful business, employing around 200 people. Johnhas recently sold the company and joined forces with Maureen,as he wishes to concentrate on helping others to adopt theskills which have enabled him to succeed.

The human voice isalso one way we preserve our identity; and the voice and thepsychological state of an individual mutually influence eachother.

When it comes to being happy in life it’s your heart thatmatters. By heart we mean inner resolution and determinationto be happy and successful in your own way. Learningto speak confidently involves inevitably a growth of yourinner confidence, which are integral to each other. Remember the prophetic words of Roger Waters and PinkFloyd in the Wall – “We Don’t Need No Education”. Now it’scome out that the only thing our children are being trainedfor is to pass exams. Examiners are actually telling teacherswhat to teach! Everyone is so shocked but in a world wherethe main motivation is profit what is the surprise? Listeningto Michael Portillo on the Moral Maze on Radio 4 recently youcould hear the profound defense of capitalist profit as the bestway to advance society. It is an axiom that it is heretical toquestion. You can soften it at the edges but don’t dare doubtit is the only option we have. However I can’t see the need forprofit appearing as a basic human need. How can such a majorpolitical and economic policy process not be based on human’semotional and psychological needs?

Our children are being pushed through the exam machines,forced to borrow tens on thousands of pounds to go touniversity and start their life hypnotized by 100′s of thousandsof hours of media advertising promoting consumption. Itreally is as James Naughtie said recently on Radio 4 “a sausagemachine” for our children. When we add to this the partythat is going on amongst the rich at the expense of the poorit starts to leave you cold. As my generation reach maturitysadly the same old story is going on. Last night on BBC itwas clear again that the Federal Reserve had a major part toplay in the financial crisis, leaving one feeling suspicious aboutthe immense power of that institution and what on earth isgoing on behind the scenes to create these global financialcatasrophes.

The only job left in town that any intelligent person can dothat will create new value is to use all their intelligence inwhat ever way that can in what ever arena that they can tooverturn the materialists greedy society we have created andare still creating unfortunately with all the force of a runnawayspeeding locomotive. We have to keep positive that change ispossible no matter what and be clear what we are up against.

Brave New World: One day Elvis Fuentes, a curator atEl Museo del Barrio, decided to search for the word“Caribbean” in the New York Times. The double-edged image of the region—as a“utopic place of pleasure and a land of deviance andillicit activity”—inspired an exhibition, called “Land ofthe Outlaw,” chronicling the role of iconic figures rangingfrom pirates to missionaries.This edgy show is one of six in an unprecedented,ambitious collaboration staged by El Museo with twoother New York institutions—the Queens Museum andthe Studio Museum in Harlem—called “Caribbean:Crossroads of the World.” The exhibition is not a show ofCaribbean art—it’s a show of art about the Caribbean, asseen from historical, cultural, and social perspectives.

In its focus on how the movement of peoplesand products around the globe created new, hybridcivilizations and artifacts, “Caribbean” is part of a waveof recent scholarship on American cultures.

But “Caribbean” tells the story entirely through art.Natives, newcomers, slaves, revolutionaries, plantations,tobacco, coffee, Carnival, merengue, Toussaint, Trujillo,Castro: all of these and more are rendered, orrepresented, in objects.

The shows offer a large selection of what might bedescribed as Caribbean art as traditionally defined.There are portraits, religious scenes, and landscapes,by figures such as Puerto Rico’s José Campeche,

Haiti’s Hector Hyppolite, Jamaica’s Edna Manley, andVenezuela’s Armando Reverón, among many others,reflecting the meeting of native and foreign cultures andthe emergence of new creole societies. And since theproject is concerned with how the outside world sees theCaribbean, the exhibitions feature images by well-knownforeigners, such as John James Audubon, Paul Gauguin,Camille Pissarro (a Saint Thomas native), Walker Evans,and Jacob Lawrence.

Contemporary artists bringing a more conceptual andmetaphorical approach to the project include NariWard and Renée Cox (born in Jamaica), Janine Antoni(Bahamas), Pepón Osorio and Enoc Pérez (Puerto Rico),Edouard Duval Carrié (Haiti), Abel Barroso, René Peña,and Sandra Ramos (all from Cuba), and Hank WillisThomas (from the United States), to name a few.
