EDITOR’S FOREWORD

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

First and foremost, praise be to Allah who gives us strength and

willing to complete this bulletin entitled “VOEx – Voice Of Excellent” for

the SEMESTER 1, 2010/2011 EDITION. Actually, this is the second edition

as the first edition had been published in December 2008. But it is not

published consistently. So, we take responsibility to life it back so

that it will be published consistently in each semester as it will be the

main bulletin and information source for all members of CFS IIUM.

Truly, completing this work is not a simple task. We have to sacrifice

our time and energy in order to finish up all the process for publishing

this bulletin. Thanks to all the crews for giving their full support and

cooperation. Thanks also to all who had help us either directly or

indirectly. May Allah bless all of your good deeds. Last but not least,

we apologize if there is something wrong we’ve done. This is not too

late for us to say “Salam Ramadhan, May this Ramadhan better than

before”. Hopes all of you are well-prepared to face the final exam that

is just around the corner. Good luck and thank you.

TIPS FOR MEMORIZING THE QUR’AN

Allah says in the Holy Qur’an (interpretation of the meaning):

“Those who recite the Book of Allah, establish regular prayer, and spend (in charity) out of what We have provided for them, secretly and openly, hope for commerce that will never fail”

(Fatir 35:29)

Abdullah ibn Amr ibn Al-As may Allah bless him reported: The Prophet peace be upon him said,

"The one who was devoted to the Qur'an will be told on the Day of Resurrection: `Recite and ascend (in ranks) as you used to recite when you were in the world. Your rank will be at the last

Ayah you recite.''' [Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi].

This Hadith mentions the merit of those who memorize part or all of the Qur'an. Some scholars, in explaining this Hadith, have mentioned that the number of ranks (levels) in Paradise is equal to the number of ayahs in the Qur’an, and that a believer will rise one rank for each ayah that he or she memorizes.

In another Hadith, Othman ibn Affan may Allah bless him reported that the Messenger of Allah peace be upon him said,

"The best amongst you is the one who learns the Qur'an and teaches it.'' [Al-Bukhari].

In what follows we list a few hints regarding memorizing the Qur’an, some of which were presented to us by the knowledgeable Sh. Osama Abdul-Azeem of Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt.

• First, make sure to correct your tawbah (repentance to Allah), as sins do not leave any room for the Words of Allah. The Imam Al-Shafie has a famous verse of poetry in which he complained to his scholar about having difficulty in memorizing. His scholar advised him to abandon sins

• Have your intention ready, and bear in mind the reward and virtues of this great deed as mentioned in the Hadiths above. Ask Allah sincerely to assist you in accomplishing this.

• Dedicate a specific time each day (or every couple of days) for memorizing. This should be a time when you are not busy with other things.

• Use the same copy of the Qur’an each time. This is because your mind takes a ‘snapshot’ of the pages.

• Start with the surahs that are easiest to you. Many people recommend beginning with the last five juz’s (the 30th, then the 29th, and so on).

• Other surahs to begin with are those that you enjoy reciting most of all, and those that you frequently listen to and thus probably already know part of by heart.

• The younger you are, the easier it will be. As you grow older, you get busier and your • capacity for memorizing decreases. However, it’s never too late in shaa Allah. If you

haven’t memorized a lot during your childhood or teens, you can still catch up. • After completing a couple of ayahs, recite them in the next nafl (voluntary prayer) that you

pray. Alternatively, practice them with a friend or your spouse.

TIPS

“Knowledge exists potentially in the human soul like the seed in the

soil; by learning the potential becomes actual.”

[Imam al-Ghazali]

Marwa Sherbini, 33 and her husband Elwy Ali Okaz had been living in Dresden, Germany for Elwy’s scholarship at the famed Max-Planck Institute for Physics. While Elwy was wrapping up his 3-year scholarship, with his thesis due in the coming days, Marwa was raising her three year-old son. She was also three months pregnant with her second child. The horrifying chain of events began with a small but significant event. Last summer, on 1st July 2009, Marwa had taken her son to a park and while there, she found a young German man on the play-swing. She requested him to give the swing up for her 3-year old. The man’s reaction was bitter, resorting to unprovoked verbal abuse– calling her an “I slamist”, a “terrorist” and worse. Marwa, unlike so many others who face this everyday across the world, did not stay silent, and with her husband’s full support, took him to court over the incident. A trial ensued and a District court found the German man (identified in some reports as Alex A.) guilty and fined him 780 €. The hateful Islamophobe murderer-to-be filed an appeal, and this hearing was being held last Wednesday. Here it is where the deadly assault took place. Just as Marwa had finished her testimony, the attacker moved across the courtroom and stabbed her – not once but

suffered in the frenzied attack. “I’m so angry that the policeman’s bullet hit me and not the killer.” It’s hard to imagine the pain that he and the couple’s family must be experiencing today. Marwa’s brother, Tariq Sherbini, labeled Germany as a “cold” country and said, “extremism has no religion. My sister was killed simply

because she wore the veil. This incident clearly shows that extremism is not limited to one religion or another and it is not exclusively carried out by Muslims… We are only asking for a fair punishment,” he said. “She was a religious woman who prayed and wore her headscarf, but she was killed because of her belief.”

The Hijab Martyr She is being remembered and honored as “Shaheeda Hijab”, the Hijab Martyr and there has been immense support, according to Islamonline.net, for their proposal to organize the World Hijab Day in her memory. The real focus is, of course, on the factors that led to this terrible tragedy. Islamophobia, unchecked and dangerous, is being cited repeatedly by Muslim groups to be the root cause of the trouble. Some are pointing to the fact that growing anti-Muslim sentiment in Europe, bolstered by illegitimate remarks on the burqa by French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, is serving as the foundation for such incidents. This event has come to light in the media for the brutality it describes. But the real question is: are there other Hijab martyrs out there? How are they suffering? What are the realities that Muslims face in Europe, and by extension other Muslim-minority states, just because they dress in a certain manner? The silence in the media over this unique and harrowing incident also gives rise to another question that is on many people’s lips: what if the situation were in reverse? Or what if a Jew had been targeted in this way due to anti-Semitic sentiments? Would the coverage have been more extensive in that case? “RIP Marwa al-Sherbini. Allah Bless You! Unfortunately, if the situation was reversed, way more people would have heard about this atrocity”. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiun

A Letter From Satan I saw you yesterday as you began your daily chores. You awoke without stopping to pray.

As a matter of fact, you didn't even bless your meals, or pray before going to bed last night. You are so unthankful, I like that about you. I cannot tell you how glad I am that you have not changed your way of living, Fool, you are mine.

Remember, you and I have been going steady for years, and I still don't love you yet. As a matter of fact, I hate you, because I hate God. I am only using you to get even with God. He kicked me out of heaven, and I'm going to use you as long as possible to pay him back. You see, Fool, GOD LOVES YOU and HE has great plans in store for you. But you have yielded your life to me and I'm going to make your life a living hell. That way we'll be together twice. This will really hurt God. Thanks to you.

I'm really showing Him who's boss in your life. With all of the good times we've had .. We have been watching dirty movies, cursing people, out partying, stealing, lying, being hypocritical, indulging in fornication, overeating, telling dirty jokes, gossiping, back stabbing people, disrespecting adults and those in leadership position, NO respect for the mosque, bad attitudes: SURELY you don't want to give all this up.

Come on, Fool, let's burn together forever. I've got some hot plans for us. This is just a letter of appreciation from me to you. I'd like to say "THANKS" for letting me use you for most of your foolish life. You are so gullible, I laugh at you. When you are tempted to sin, you give in HA HA HA , you make me sick. Sin is beginning to take its toll on your life. You look 20 years older, I need new blood. So go ahead and teach some children how to sin.

All you have to do is smoke, drink alcoholic beverages, cheat, gamble, gossip, fornicate, and listen to and dance to the top 10 jams. Do all of this in the presence of children and they will do it too. Kids are like that. Well, Fool, I have to let you go for now. I'll be back in a couple of seconds to tempt you again. If you were smart, you would run somewhere, confess your sins, ask forgiveness from Him, live for God with what little bit of life that you have left. It's not my nature to warn anyone, but to be your age and still sinning, it's becoming a bit ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I still hate you...... IT'S JUST THAT YOU'D MAKE A BETTER FOOL FOR GOD.

So REMEMBER :

" And Satan will say when the matter is decided ( The Disbelievers entered the hell ) :

"It was Allah Who gave you a promise of Truth: I too promised, but I failed in my promise to you. I had no authority over you except to call you but ye listened to me:

then reproach not me, but reproach your own souls. I cannot listen to your cries, nor can ye listen to mine. I reject your former act in associating me with Allah. For

wrong-doers there must be a grievous penalty." Quran [14:22]
