Standing Ovation!Standing Ovation!Standing Ovation!Standing Ovation!The Toastmasters International District 82, Annual

convention – a confluence of kindred spirits, agathering of like-minded souls, a time for meetingold friends and making new ones – Ovation 2010 was all this and more…

The inaugural evening had a flag march with all theDistrict Officers, and the singing of the nationalanthems of India and Sri Lanka. The dazzling dancedisplay by Jeffrey Vardon, Chennai’s premier danceand ballet ensemble showcased the best of traditional Indian with a contemporary twist- fromKalari , Bharata Natyam to Rock & Roll and Salsa.

The Conference Chair welcomed the gathering, asdid the District Governor Deepak Menon and otherdignitaries, among them Abraham Bosco,- RegionAdvisor Marketing TI, LGET Nagaraj Rao, LGMSaleem, and IPDG Balraj Arunasalam.

A special feature of this year’s conference was theawarding of TI award for Excellence inCommunication and Leadership to JayashreeRaveendran . An individual with a hearingdisability, Jayashree is a journalist, dancer, and nowsocial activist. The award is for Jayashree’spioneering efforts in mainstream media –throughprint , radio, film and multi-media , to reach outto those who are disabled in myriad ways, and tobuilding bridges between them and ‘normal’society. Her leadership is evident in theFoundation’s many events such as the Job Fair for

the disabled, the international Film fest, the

centre for legal assistance and informationdissemination, among others. All details areavailable in the souvenir we released on theoccasion–or check their websitewww.abilityfoundation.org.

The highlight of the inaugural was the Keynoteaddress by Mark Brown, World Champion1995 –it had all the grandeur, the vocal variety, voice modulation and body language anyToastmaster expects in a world champion andthen some more. Mark won a lot of hearts afterthe speech as well by meeting everybody, chatting to all the delegates, exchangingfootball stories, family stories and jokes of allkinds.

The second day saw a set of parallel sessions:all the educational sessions on one side, andanother one by Mark Brown for corporates

–“Ate ways leaders gets things done.” Hissession on the Ovation 2010 theme “TheAlchemy of Articulation” was received by ahouseful audience with encores –everybodyloved it. Mark’s bag of tips, tools andtechniques epitomized how “great speeches arenot written –they are assembled.” The seedsfor District 82 to create a World Championwere planted here –it is up to us as District tonurture this seed.

The education sessions were as erudite as they

were entertaining- Pavan, Vijayshree ,Sabarigirish, P.C. Ramakrishna, Sumithra,Balraj,Aditya and Niranjan & Srikanth, all dida great job. Feedback forms told us only half the story –the rest was in the happy expressionsof people leaving the halls.

As a n ew Division G overnor you w ill get a lot o f advice. Actually, you w ill get a lot o f great advice. If you try to follow all o f it, then you m ight as well tr yto walk on water. Th e art of gettin g to President 'sDistingu ished is not t o implement a ll well-meanin gsuggesti ons, but to find out the key thi ngs that are tr ulyimporta nt to get done . In my estima te there are te n(10) cr itical success fa ctors that lea d a division t oPresiden t's Distinguishe d. Let me tell y ou right away: Ihave no t m astered all of them equally well.

1. Team : The re i s lot to do i n a D ivision over a per iodof twel ve months. So, it's crucial to h ave a great team helping you in the proc ess. Make sure you have willin gand ca pable area governors.Establish a communic ation plan(e.g. reg ular conferenc e calls) anda repo rt ing mechanis m, so thateverybo dy knows where thedivision stands. At th e divisionlevel co nte sts are serio us business.I reco mmend that you get someon e on your tea m to focus

on thos e. I created the role of Lt.Division Governor Edu cat ion andTrainin g. The responsi bility of this pe rson is to mak esure tha t the contests are planned w ell and execut edsmooth ly. The other ke y role is the pe rson focusin g o nyour ne w club strategy . For that I cre ated the role o f Lt. Div ision Governor Marketing. T hat per son is incharge of all new cl ub building ac tivities in you rdivision . Also, he or sh e works hand in hand with th eDistrict Lt. Governor M arketing and her t eam as we llas with the divisional a rea governors.

2. Mem ber focus: At the end of the day, we need tom ake sure that the e xperience is p ositive for ou rmembe rs. Use the con test season as a motivator fo ryour m embers to pa rticipate in th e Toas tmaster s’learning process. But there is more. Facilitate speec hmarath ons on the area and/or division level providin gspeakin g opportunities beyond the cl ub . I don't thinkyou can ever have eno ugh of those. O ne thing to kee pan eye o n: There is a ph enomenon in T oastmasters tha tis wort h tackling. Peo ple joi n a club with a lot o f enthusia sm. After two, three or four sp eeches they dropout. Ke eping these me mbers engaged will make a b igdifferen ce. Ret aining m ember s is key to your long-term growth strategy. En gaged membe rs will delive rspeeche s, which mea ns Competent Com m unicat o r

Awards (CCs) or Advanced Communicator Awards(ACs), which in turn means precious Distinguished ClubPlan (DCP) points.

3. Keep clubs in play: In my first speech as a DivisionGovernor I mentioned that we need to play defensefirst. Like in soccer or American football, that is howyou win the game. What does this mean to those of uswho run a Division? We need to make sure that ourexisting clubs continue to function. When a club hastwelve or less members, it is at risk. Make sure that these

clubs get a coach or two. Make sure that the clubleadership team of a low-membership club is committedto growing the club back to twenty members or more.

There is a clear businesscase for that. Starting anew club means that youneed a demo teamcoming in at least once. Inaddition, you need twosponsors and twomentors. That draws a lotof resources into the

process: a demo teamrequires commitments

from at least four people. In addition, you need thecommitment from four people to be sponsors/mentors.Turning a club around only requires one or twodedicated coaches. At the end you only have so manyvolunteer leaders who might be able to participate ineither a club rescue mission or starting a new club. Dothe math. It is wise to use the available volunteeringcapacity carefully. Keep in mind, that you only need tohave one more club in your Division than you startedout with. Keep the ones you have and start one newclub and you have the necessary condition fulfilled tobecome President's Distinguished .

4. Payments: Nobody likes to be like the IRS taxcollector. However, collecting dues twice a year isinevitable. My recommendation on this subject is short.Stay close to the dues collection process in fall andspring. Very often late payments tell you that there isa potential problem in the club. It's not very difficult tocollect twenty or so checks and send the money toToastmasters International. If a club has trouble doingthis on-time, then there might be other issues as well.

Communicate early and often about this. Alert yourarea governors and club officers ahead of time. Stay ontop of those clubs that are late with their payments.Consider a personal call, if need be.

Is it possible for us - adults - to keep our power of

imagination potent? We can not be as fanciful aschildren, but we can be thoughtful all the time, can'twe? But then, the demand on us is greater if we haveto help ourselves with Table Topics. It is not enoughto fill the vacant minutes and minds with matter. Wehave to literally, though not loudly, verbalize ourideas.

Take for instance the long hours of waiting at therestaurant for our first course to arrive when ourstomachs growl and grumble… Frustration can be

transformed into fructification if we areprepared to play the TM game. How aboutvocalizing our thoughts on, 'If I were themanager of this restaurant, what eco-friendlymeasures would I take?' If the silent GeneralEvaluator in us objects to the long-windedtopic, how about, 'If I were a waiter?' Wewould hit upon enough ideas to turn intosoft-skill trainers. But then, we need to beventriloquists and talk without opening ourmouths because the rule of the game is that wecomplement mental pictures with wordclusters.

By tapping the wellspring of ideas all the time, wecan rest assured that even if we were to still fail tosparkle on TM public platforms in TT Sessions, wewould at least have views of our own in privatecircles. After all life is a fair game and it ensures thatno fair play goes to waste. We can also (hopefully)escape the predicament expressed by GordonLivingston: Too soon, old; too late smart.

During a large dinnerparty one evening,Clarence Kelland, servingas toastmaster, rose tospeak at the end of themeal:"Gentlemen ," he began, " the obviousduty of a toastmaster is to be soinfernally dull that the succeeding

speakers will appear brilliant bycontrast ..."

An appreciative chuckle arose fromthe speakers' table. "However," Kelland continued, brandishing a listof speakers, "I've looked over the listand I don't believe Ican do it!"

Standing Ovation!Standing Ovation!Standing Ovation!Standing Ovation!continued from page 5

The evening saw the Toastmaster at their relaxedbest – good food, good friends and goodfun–what more could anyone ask for? Music bythe DJ, dance by Toastmasters.

The final day saw all the contestants geared upand ready for the battle of the Titans- RajdeepManwani won with a rousing Table Topicspeech on “Should politics and religion be a partof regular conversation?” Runners-

up were Dev Wijetunge and DayanFernando. Runners-up for theInternational Speech Contest wereNeha Jagtap and DhanajayanHettiarachchi, with Aaron Watsonthe winner to go to the InternationalSpeech Contest in August in USA.

The District Council meeting on 22May saw the elections of the newDistrict Council, with Nagaraj Raoas the new District Governor , LGETMZ Saleem and LGM SV Harikumar.A sad feature of the District Councilwas the low attendance of Districtofficers – Area Governors, Presidentsand VPE’s of clubs. As Toastmasters we need toinculcate in all club officers the idea of responsibility towards running Toastmasters asa whole, not just the immediate club. Thisacquires great importance because we are at the

cusp of an exploding moment in Toastmasterhistory – all District Officers need to understandthis.

Incoming District Governor Nagaraj Rao’saddress set the tone for more achievements nextyear.

At Ovation 2010 we tried a few innovations: aBusiness Networking session, so that all TM’s couldleverage their social networking in a differentdimension, and the release of a Delegate Directory, also for the same. The presentations by just twoorganizations- one for an Outbound LeadershipInstitute and another for solar & LED lighting sawboth getting firm enquiries and hopefully someorders in the near future!

Ovation 2010 created a record forPR initiatives – our Principal SponsorChennai Live 104.8 featured theConference Chair, DG DeepakMenon and Mark Brown on radio, and NDTV Hindu did a specialinterview with Mark Brown stillavailable on Mark’s website.

All in all, Ovation 2010 was receivedwith great warmth and accolades bythose who attended – all of us whoworked for this truly appreciate that.IP DG Deepak Menon said Ovation2010 was for him the perfect icingon the cake of his stupendously

successful innings. As hosts, we also had two morecherries on the cake- our lighthouse club Chennaigot the Best Club award, and our Division G withAbraham Zachariah at the helm, ( Nirmala Lillycreating a Division in one year flat with 9 new

clubs), outstripped all other divisions! In the Districtthat is No.1 in the world, no mean achievementindeed! What it also did for us in Division G is tothrow up new leaders, ready to face the challengesof tomorrow.

From the entire team of Ovation 2010 –thank you!
