FROM THE DESK OF OUR RABBINIC INTERN, WARNER FERRATIER
Our Rabbinic Intern is writing monthly bulletin articles while Rabbi Schonbrun is on sabbatical until next month.
There’s an old story about a king who promised a reward to whichever of his three children could completely fill a large room. The first two children try valiantly, but unsuccessfully, as there are still gaps between their chosen objects. The third child however, enters the room with a single lamp, ignites it, and the room is filled with light. If one small flame can fill a room, then imagine what eight of them can do!
Hanukkah is, of course, the Festival of Light. On each of its eight days, we add a light because we want the light (and the goodness it represents) to increase in our lives. We place the lights in the window to “publicize the miracle.” Unlike many traditional practices, every member of the household is encouraged to light his or her own menorah. Each of these practices reinforces the idea that nobody has an exclusive right to light. It is intended to be shared, to be enjoyed, although not to be used for practical purposes. In other words, the extra light isn’t an excuse to make someone work longer hours. It is a symbol of freedom, rather than of oppression.
When I became more traditionally observant, I was surprised to learn that in addition to lighting the menorah in the evening, it is also lit during morning services. It makes sense to light them at night, but it seemed a little foolish, perhaps even wasteful in the morning.
The more I think about it, though, the more I like the tradition. If we believe that light is a symbol for goodness, then there can never be too much light. We might notice and appreciate it more during the times of darkness, but it still has value even when it is harder to distinguish during the hours of daylight.
These winter months are times of literal darkness. We need the lights of Hanukkah to shine brightly. The small flames seem to unite to repel the darkness that seems to weigh us down. In the secular world, we also seem to feel as though the darkness is weighing us down. We look to the festival lights to provide the hope and joy which push back the darkness that exists in our world.
However, we need to remember that the lights which shine at night, pushing back the darkness, are the same lights which we kindle in the morning. The same bits of hope and joy which shine so bravely in the night also shine during the less-fraught hours of daylight, even though they are less appreciated.
I sometimes think that good people are like these lights. We may not notice their work when times are easy, but we certainly notice them when times are more difficult. Perhaps this is the test. We may not feel up to the task of being light in the darkness, but perhaps we can be a light during the day. Conversely, we may strive to be a light in the darkness, but are we willing to be a light when no one is looking?
This Hanukkah, as we look at the lights pushing back the darkness, perhaps we should take a moment to reflect on the people in our lives who are our lights during the day. While enjoying the light from the menorah, take a moment to remember the people whose efforts are less appreciated. Take a moment to tell them about it. Perhaps by doing so, you will become a light to them in a dark moment.
Chag Urim Sameach!

MEET THE AUTHOR SERIES
CONGREGATION TORAT EL
Sunday, January 13, 2019 - 11:00am
Meet Yvette Corporon, author of Something Beautiful Happened
The author grew up listening to her grandmother’s stories about how the people on the Greek island Erikousa hid a Jewish family—a tailor named Savvas and his daughters—from the Nazis during World War II. Years later, she set out to track down the tailor’s descendants. Her search lasted years and took her around the world until miraculously she found them. Ms. Corporon’s excitement at finding Savvas’s family was shattered when three days later her nephew was gunned down in Kansas, a victim of a Neo-Nazi gunman. Something Beautiful Happened is a personal memoir and an ambitious account of the untold history of the Greek Jews. It is a story about the importance of kindness and the courage to stand up for what’s right no matter the cost, as well as the realization that the legacy of Naziism continues to exist. Yvette Manessis Corporon is a three-time Emmy Award-winning writer, author, and television producer.
Author also of The Cypress Whispers, she has been honored for her work on Greek Heritage and Culture.
Pre-Paid $15 per person/$20 at the door. Books will be available in the temple office
A light brunch will be served. Reservations at www.torat-el.org or 732-531-4410
This ongoing series has been made possible by a generous grant from the B’nai Sholom/Beth El Foundation.
