Dear Friend, As I sat down to write this letter, I hardly knew where to begin; my mind and my thoughts were whirling about many things when this verse came to me. “The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.” (Jer. 8:20) I believe the greatest burden, the greatest care upon any pastor’s heart is to see his people, and his congregation come to know the Lord. I know that is my heart’s desire; that I could see some movement in their hearts toward seeking to know the Lord. This ministry, that we call Radio Missions, has stood for over 75 years, sending forth the unadulterated Gospel to the lost and dying world. We believe that we here basically stand alone. I know how the religious world has become the hot bed of mod- ernism, easy believingism, etc. I keep up with the modern day ministries, the television and radio preachers and, I’m sorry to say, I don’t find or see much “old-fashioned” preaching going out. We have accepted this “just trust Jesus,” shake some preacher’s hand or some other erroneous way of “salvation.” I know how the Lord saves a sinner; the Holy Spirit begins that work by awakening that poor soul to see his true condition. Dear Friend,As I sat down to write this letter, I hardly knew where to begin; my mind and

The Israelites or Jews will bebrought back to their ownnative land in much greater

numbers than are there now. In somefew cases the prophets would referand have in mind Israel’s return fromtheir exile like as mentioned inJeremiah 29:10. Most of the timeshowever, references in these passagesconcerning Israel’s return to takeplace long after meaning, “to return asecond time.” You will find thesewords in Isaiah 11:11 and Jeremiah12:15. This return will witness theHebrew people coming back toPalestine in great numbers, and thephrase in Jeremiah 29:14, “from allthe nations” means just that. TheHebrew people in Palestine today willtell you that there are Jews there frombetween 105 and 110 nations. Theprophets declare that Israel will abidein the land permanently (Jer. 24:6), “Iwill set my face upon them for good. Iwill bring them again to this land. Iwill build them and not pull themdown. I will plant them and not pluckthem up.” This has not taken placeyet, permanently. The statement ismade several times “The Jews will bein their land safely”. The theme ofdwelling safely is often expressed inJeremiah. For example, (33:16) “Inthose days shall Judah be saved, andJerusalem shall dwell safely: and thisis the name wherewith she shall becalled, Jehovah our righteousness.”Another thing you will notice in study-ing prophecy which is of deep inter-est; and that is, prophecies whichspeak of the future are related to thematter of righteousness. You remem-ber when Paul preached to theAthenians (Acts 17), he made plain tothem that when Christ returned Hewould judge the world “in righteous-

ness.” The apostle Peter (2 Pet. 3:13)tells us that the earth will be “renewedin righteousness.”

JEWS WORLDWIDE WILL BEREUNITED IN ONE NATION. Theprophet Ezekiel (ch. 37:15-28) makesclear that all these prophecies will befulfilled literally on earth in behalf ofthe Israelites. Regardless of whatsome of the older Commentaries andCalvin wrote, Jewish prophecies andpromises will not be applied to thechurch. You cannot mix the two. AndGod says you give offense if you try todo it – 1 Cor. 10:32. I know what thescholars taught on prophecy throughthe nineteenth century, 18th, 17th,16th and further back. But they werewrong in saying that the propheciesand promises which God made to theJews would be fulfilled in blessings tothe church. You will note in readingwhat the apostle Paul said in speakingof the great Decalogue passage that wewere to “honor father and mother bywhich the Lord would give long life inthe land which the Lord thy Godgiveth thee.” You will note Paul didnot say to these Ephesians (GreekPagans) that this land was given tothem, he said that “it may be well withthee, and thou mayest live long on theearth.” This is an entirely differentmatter, if you read Exodus 20:12 andEphesians 6:1-3. It is also true thatIsrael will experience a time of greattrouble for God said to them (Jer.46:28), “I will not leave thee whollyunpunished.” This time is spoken ofas “the time of Jacob’s trouble” (Jer.30:7), meaning the great tribulationthrough which Israel and the Gentileswill go – Rom. 2:8-10, but not theChurch. Moses referred to this periodalso near the close of his life (Deut.31:29), “Evil will befall you in the lat-

ter days”: (Zech. 14:1-3), “Jerusalemwill be besieged” a nd temporarilycaptured.

THERE WILL BE AN UNUSUALINVASION BY THE NORTHERN POW-ERS AS RECORDED IN EZEKIEL 38-39.I with many Bible students, scholarsand writers, and likewise JewishRabbis believe this northern invaderwill be Russia. The late Dr. L. SaleHarrison who held a Bible conferencein our church in 1931, said the originaltext of the word was “Rosho,” andmeant Russia and would be a terribletragedy for Israel. He and Dr.Bauman wrote some good books onRussia’s invasion of Israel. Note whatthe prophet Zechariah said (12:2-3),“And in that day will I make Jerusalema burdensome stone for all people.”Now that “burdensome stone” meansthe nations persecuting Israel willbring divine injury upon themselvesfor having tried to fit Jerusalem intotheir political structure which theysought to erect. The city of Jerusalemhas been up before the United Nationsfive times in the last 25 years. In eachcase no decision was ever reached. This is what Zechariah meant when hesaid that it would prove a burdensomestone to any nation. Prophecydeclares that Israel will ultimatelyhave both a great political and spiritu-al revival – Ezek. 36-37. In verses 19and 20 of Ezekiel 11, which is also likeas Jeremiah 32:39, you can read thesegracious words: “I will give them oneheart, and I will put a new spirit with-in you; and I will take the stony heartout of their flesh, and will give theman heart of flesh: that they may walkin my statutes, and keep my ordi-nances and do them: and they shall bemy people, and I will be their God.”These divine words have never come

true yet, but we see movings in thatdirection. The time will come whenthe Gentile nations “will come up toJerusalem to learn the law of theLord.” – Isa. 1:26-27 and 2:2-3 revealthis.

ISAIAH CONTINUED THIS THEMETHROUGH CHAPTERS 62-66.Jerusalem eventually will be ruledover by the divine Son of their greatking – Jer. 23:5-8; Ezek. 37:24. Therecan be no kingdom without a king andthe King David spoken of in prophecywith reference to the Messiah wouldbe the Messiah himself, which eventwill take place at the end of the days.(1) Jerusalem will ultimately be thesource of universal peace – Isa. 66:10-12; Hag. 2:9. Rom. 9-10-11 Pauldeclares will bring salvation to thepeople (Israel). (2) Verses 4-33 inRomans 9 review Israel’s past history.Chapter 10 shows present conditiontoday, and chapter 11 declares Godhas not cast away His people, for Paulhimself was an Israelite and saved. (3)Paul says Israel was the true olivebranch and because of unbelief bro-ken off and the Gentiles, or the wildolive tree, have been grafted into thetrue olive tree contrary to nature. These broken branches must be graft-ed in again to the true olive tree sothat “all Israel shall be saved” accord-ing to Isaiah 59:20-21. (4) The templein Jerusalem will be erected (Dan.12:11; Matt. 24:15; 2 Thess. 2:3-4; Rev.11:1-10). (5) Because of great tribula-tion the Jews will become few in num-ber (Deut. 28:62), but “shall blossomand bud, and fill the face of the worldwith fruit” – Isa. 27:6. Zephaniah says,“I will get them praise and fame inevery land where they have been putto shame” – Zeph. 3:19.

Then there are those who trustin and boast of the light ofnature. They are worldly-wise.

They are always talking about whothey are, what they are, what they cando, what they have done, where theyhave been, what they know, what theyplan, etc. They try to impress theworld with their importance. Christsaid, speaking of this type, “If ye wereblind, ye should have no sin; but nowye say, We see; therefore your sinremaineth.” (John 9:41) The Phariseeshad never faced reality – they did notwant to face reality.

When you try to be true to such anindividual, and try to get him to facereality, he gets mad with you, becausehe thinks that you don’t love him, thatyou have it in for him. Usually he istouchy on some point, and when youhit that sore spot, he’ll run. It’sbecause he is unwilling to face reality.Stop sinner! Oh, sinner, will you stop?Look to Christ! Listen to the voicewithin as He speaks to you, that youmay be broken at the feet of Christand that you might enter into the ben-efits of the Gospel. Christ said, “I amsent unto the lost sheep… The son ofman is come to seek and to save thatwhich was lost…” “If our gospel behid, it is hid to them who are lost…blinded by the god of this world.” Godsaves only lost sinners. Let me whis-per that in your ear. Listen sinner,God saves only lost sinners! Are youlost? Are you LOST? Can you throwup your hands and cry, “Father! OhGod, I’m lost! Save me lest I perish!I’m drowning! I’m gone! All hope isgone! I’m at my wit’s end!” Sinner, are you lost? Stop sinner; stop andlook yourself in the face. May I askyou a question? Will you do what I tell

you to do? Will you go to the mirror, and look yourself squarely in the face, and ask yourself the question, “Am Isaved? Do I know Christ?” Will you behonest with yourself? Will you facegrim reality? Will you not flee fromreality?

Then, there are those who are aliveunder the law while sin is dead inthem – sin has never been revived. They can sit and listen to Gospelpreaching and never be moved. Manyof them love Gospel preaching – thestronger the better, but they havenever been awakened to their danger. If the Holy Spirit moves their heart theleast bit, they will stay away from thepreaching for a while until all is set-tled. Christ came to save the con-demned – those under condemnation, those who realize they are condemnedto die. Christ pardons only guilty sin-ners. Are you guilty? The sinner mustknow that he is guilty, acknowledgethat he is guilty, take his place as aguilty sinner before God before he canbe pardoned. Such a sinner ceases tofight back. Have you stopped fightingback, sinner?

Now let’s notice briefly those whobenefit by the death and resurrectionof Christ. The first are those who aredead in trespasses and sins, but whohear His voice. “They that hear shalllive.” “You hath he quickened (madealive), who were dead in trespassesand sins.” Yes, those who are con-demned at the bar of justice, con-demned by their own conscience, those who feel the curse as a trans-gressor of the law, those who feel theweight and burden of their sins, thosewho are damned as unbelievers of theGospel…none but such souls as theseever hunger or thirst after the right-eousness of Christ, because they alonesee their own unrighteousness and

feel and know their need of a cover-ing. What covering do you have foryour sins, my friend? Has the LordGod ever passed by you and said,“Live?” Have you ever felt the arrowsof God striking deep into your soul?Have you ever faced the fact that youare condemned to die, and that justly?Have your unrighteousness anduncleanness ever been so manifest, orrevealed to your heart, until you havecried out for the righteousness ofChrist? Then has God ever passed byyou and spread His skirt over you andcovered your nakedness? Let meprobe your heart just a little bit, willyou?

If not – oh, if not, is there a deepdesire in your heart that you can’t giveup, you can’t let go, and you don’twant to let go until God spreads Hisskirt of righteousness over you? Mysinner friend, is there that deep desirein your heart? A cry, “I must knowChrist. I’ve got to get to Christ. I’vegot to know Him. I can’t live anylonger without Him!” There is such ahunger, there’s such a thirst in yourheart. If there is, you are going toenter into the benefits of the atone-ment of the Lord Jesus on the cross ofCalvary and through the empty tomb.Yes, you will! I believe this with allmy heart – that before a sinner getssaved he’ll come to hunger and thirstafter Christ so much that he’s willingto give up every bite of bread that hehas. He’s willing to surrender his job,his home, his family; he’s ready togive up everything under the sun ifonly he could know Christ as his Lordand his Saviour!

Let me read you a Scripture, myfriend, which bears this out, found inZech. 12:10:

“And I will pour upon thehouse of David, and upon theinhabitants of Jerusalem, thespirit of grace and of supplica-tions: and they shall look uponme (Christ) whom they havepierced (whom they have cruci-

fied), and they shall mourn forhim (for Christ), as one mour-neth for his only son, and shallbe in bitterness for him(Christ), as one that is in bitter-ness for his firstborn.”

Now, that’s Scripture, and that’s exact-ly what happens to every individualwho ever gets saved. He looks uponChrist and sees that his sins crucifiedthe Son of God, and there comes sucha mourning, such a longing and such adesire, such a hunger in his heart forChrist that he’ll be seeking Him. Nowthat’s what he talks about, seeking theLord, and you can’t let go. You say “Iwill not give up. I’ll sit down on theback doorstep of Heaven as a beggaruntil the Lord Jesus comes by; if it’s amillion years I’ll stay here. I’ve got toknow the Lord.”

It’s to such a heart as that, that Godthe Holy Spirit reveals the livingChrist, the crucified, buried, risen, and exalted Lord Jesus in the quiet-ness of the hour when all hope isgone, and you are there with yourback against the wall. You are facingthe Red Sea; you are facing a humanimpossibility. And then, in that quietmoment the Lord Jesus is revealed toyour heart as the living Christ, as theliving Saviour, as the living Lord. That’s right! Then you have threethings – a living Christ, a living Word, and a living believer, and all three areunited together. “The words that Ispeak unto you, they are spirit, andthey are life.” (John 6:63)

Then you’ll have a living believerthat’s raised from the dead and madea new creature in Christ Jesus ourLord. That’s the way God saves a sin-ner. That’s right! That’s the way Godsaves a sinner. Yes, now you’re goingto hunger. There’ll come such ahunger in your heart, that you’ll wantHim. Then, brother, when Godreveals Christ to your heart, He comesby revelation and you’ll believe Him!You can’t turn Him down then! You

rupt. Upon their first conversion, theywere often filled with comfort, rejoiced in hope, and found sweet sat-isfaction in attendance on divine ordi-nances: and they entertained the fondhope that it would always be thus, orbetter. They were like little children, dandled on the parent’s knee, and notexposed to hardship or required tolabor; but soon the scene changes.Darkness hangs over them; difficultiesperplex; conflicts discourage them.Inbred corruption begins to stir sensi-bly, and evils appear which were notbelieved to exist. The power of temp-tation is felt; and the Christian finds itto be literally true, that he is engagedin a warfare. Pride rises and attemptsto regain its former mastery; passionswells and become impetuous; thebaits which the world presents toavarice [extreme greed], ambition, and the love of ease and pleasure, arefound to be far more fascinating thanwas expected. The pleasures of reli-gion too have subsided, and the livelyrelish for the service of God is abated.Prayer, meditation, and self-examina-tion, once so delightful, now too oftenare a burden, and are, therefore, fre-quently neglected, or hastily and care-lessly performed. A distressing reluc-tance to spiritual duties is experi-enced; and all the pleasures of reli-gion have vanished. Now theChristian may be compared to aweaned child, from which the motherturns herself away, and refuses it itswonted refreshment; or perhaps isbetter represented by the child sentoff from his father’s roof, to shift forhimself, in a wide and unfriendlyworld. To increase his affliction, external troubles often combine withthose which are inward and spiritual.Malignant enemies rise up to annoyand persecute; friends die, or becomeunkind; ministers, on whom perhaps

too much dependence was placed, areremoved; zealous professors turnback to the world; religion is woundedin the house of her friends; truth liesbleeding in the streets; family com-forts decay; and poverty and debt suc-ceed to affluence and comfort; and tocrown all, Satan comes forth with afrightful roar, and endeavors to worrywhom he knows he cannot devour. Now, indeed, the feeble, timid soul ispressed beyond expression. It groans“being burdened;” almost wishes fordeath; not because conscious ofpreparation for a better world, but asa release from trouble. Sometimes, under these afflictions, especiallywhen bodily health is impaired, or agood name blasted by the tongue ofcalumny [slander], the soul grows pet-tish and impatient; and the feelings, ifexpressed in words, would be some-thing like this, “Why am I thus? Whyam I left to buffet the storm withouthelp or refuge? Why am I abandonedof God, and made a reproach to myenemies, who daily say, scoffingly,‘Where is now your God, in whom youtrusted? There is no help for him inGod.’ ” Or more commonly, theafflicted and heavy-laden soul, sinksinto despondency, and concludes thatit never has been in the right way; thatsurely, if it was one of God’s dear chil-dren, it would never be thus forsakenand left to sink in the horrible pit andmiry clay. “Surely,” it exclaims, “thiscannot be the way in which Jehovahleads his own dear children, whom hehath redeemed.” Were it not that nowand then there is “a little reviving” inthe midst of these years of affliction;unless, after long intervals of thickdarkness, some rays of cheerful lightgilded the dark scene, and some dropsof refreshment fell into the cup of sor-row, the soul would be overwhelmed

POINTED ARROWS(Selected quotes from L. R. Shelton and otherearly Baptist, Puritan, and Reformed writers)

Unbelief calls itself “honest doubt,”and not without cause, for we shouldnot have known it to be honest if ithad not labeled itself so.

Unbelief will destroy the best of us.Faith will save the worst of us.

When your will is God’s will, you willhave your will.

When unsaved religionists hear God’sSpirit-indited message, they will eitherrepent and turn to Christ for salvation,or turn on God’s messenger.

God administers no anesthetic duringHoly Spirit conviction for salvation.

God does not run a bargain counter. You will come clean with God or go toHell for your trouble.

No man is ever saved in his stinginess;he’ll go to Hell and leave his moneybehind.

God saves only lost sinners – Are youlost? Can you go back to the timewhen you took your place as a lost sin-ner? If not, you are not saved.

“If I should die tonight, I would go to___________” (Fill in the blank.)

You must be born again or go to Hell.

It’s either Christ or Satan, Heaven orHell, life or death, mercy or judgment.Which?

If you are not looking for Christ’sreturn, it shows you are not saved.

If the child never learns obedience toits parents, it will never come to knowobedience to the Gospel.

In the average pulpit the Word of Godis whittled to pieces, sin is minimized, man is deified, Christ is humanized, and salvation is taken for granted.

God sends no one to Hell; you go toHell of your own choice.

God’s Word is true whether any manbelieves it – believe it and be saved;disbelieve it and be damned.

The Gospel never tries to get alongwith any man; it strikes hard andswiftly, slaying the sinner.

God saves a sinner from his sins, notin his sins.

The missing note in present-daypreaching is Bible repentance. Therecan be no saving faith apart fromBible repentance.

Holy Spirit conviction is an ancientmystery to the average church. If youmiss Holy Spirit conviction, you go toHell without warning.

A sinner does not wake up to the factthat he is saved; he wakes up to thefact that he is lost, that he hates God,and he is a son of Satan!

Christ is Lord of all – or not Lord at all!

Man is not on trial; he is under thesentence of death waiting the day ofexecution.

The ultimate proof of the sinner isthat he doesn’t recognize his own sin.

would not turn Him down under anycondition. That’s right! That’s whatPaul said, “The Gospel I preach cameby revelation…and when it pleasedGod to reveal his Son in me…” Thenhe said, “We are shut up under the lawunto faith” (with a heart of unbelief) –or, “until faith is revealed,” and faithis revealed when the living Christ isrevealed to your heart. Then you’ll layhold of Him, and it’s no trouble tobelieve, is it?

Sinner friend, you’ve racked yourbrain, you’ve practically burned yourbrain out, trying to believe, but youcan’t. You can’t! Rest before Him andlook to Him; ask Him to reveal Christto your heart. “Make Him real to me,Lord. I do believe; help thou myunbelief. I do believe.” Sit there as abeggar at His feet until He has beenrevealed to your heart. “Flesh andblood hath not revealed this untothee,” Christ said to Peter, “but myFather, which is in heaven.” The Sonlies in the bosom of the Father, andHe is given to whom God will revealHim. He is sovereign. He is eternal. My friend, it’s the greatest thing in theworld to know that living Christ. Iknow what I’m talking about. I know!I’ll stake my eternal destiny upon it.There’s the storm center of the battleground right there. There it is – that

salvation comes to the human heartby REVELATION. “Salvation is of theLORD.” (Jonah 2:9) But you are goingto face reality.

Then those who are meek will enterinto the benefits of the Gospel. Christsaid, “He hath sent me to preach goodtidings to the meek.” The meek arethe only ones who will hear the tid-ings. Only the soul that is boweddown through grief and anguish andtrouble and distress – only the soulthat is so dismayed and dejected that itcannot bear a harsh word because hisspirit is sunk so low through continualsorrow of heart and grief of mind –will listen to the Gospel. He wantsdeliverance. He wants the comfort, the peace, the pardon, the deliveranceof the Gospel. Yes, those who are bro-ken by the cutting convictions of God’sWord – they are broken by the terrorsof the law – they are broken by theaccusations of Satan – they are brokenby the reproaches of those who are atease – they will know the binding upof their broken hearts by the hand ofthe Lord Jesus when He pours oil andwine of the Gospel into their woundedhearts – the oil, the grace of God forhealing; the wine, the joy of theGospel. Do you know Him?

The Sinner Facing the Truth(Continued from Page 7)

True repentance consists ofthe heart that is broken for sin

with a burden which human strengthis unable to bear.

But how is this the way of sanctifica-tion? It looks more like the path ofdeclension and apostasy. But remem-ber, that before we can ascend wemust descend; before we can be filledwith the divine fullness, we must beemptied of self and sin. To bring us tofeel our weakness and entire depen-dence, we must be left to try our ownstrength; and to convince us of the evilof sin, we must, for a season, be left tostruggle against its power, and tolearn to know the “depths of Satan.”To cure us of the undue love of theworld, the world must be “crucified tous, and we to it;” and to preserve usfrom idolizing the creature, theobjects of our too fond affections mustbe snatched away from our embrace. But, doubtless, this is a way which thepeople of God did not know, until theywere led into it. Even when fore-warned by experienced Christians, ofthe difficulties and dangers of theway, they heeded them not; as eithernot understanding what they meant,or as not giving full credit to their tes-timony.

4. Another thing in the dispensa-tions of God to his people which, priorto experience, they never distinctlyunderstood, and which cannot easilybe explained, is his leaving them for aseason to backslide; and then recover-ing them by the exercise of the samesovereign grace which first broughtthem into the path of life.

The young convert cannot believethat he shall every grow cold anddecline in piety, much less that hemay be left to commit some grievoussin, to the sore wounding of his con-science, and perhaps the dishonor ofhis profession. But, notwithstandinghis strong confidence, which leadshim to boast, “my mountain standeth

strong, I shall never be moved,” it willnot be a new thing on the earth, or inthe church, if he should add one morebeacon to the many with which thiscoast is already strewed, to be a warn-ing to those who come after him.Backsliding begins in the heart, showsitself in the closet first, and soon dif-fuses its paralyzing influence throughthe life. The backslider for a whilemay preserve a fair exterior; his pub-lic devotions may appear to be punc-tual and fervent, while in secret he iscold and careless. The Christian whilein this declining state, differs so littlefrom the hypocrite, that it is not easyto discriminate between them.Indeed, to the man himself, this iscommonly impossible, and happilyso; for when love grows cold, fearmust be brought to operate on the nat-ural feelings. If backsliders possessassurance, it is the assurance of delu-sion. While thus departing from God,they cannot possess satisfactory evi-dence of his favor, for the exercise ofgrace is its evidence. The symptomsof backsliding are evident enough. The want of lively faith, and love, andpenitence, is the root of the evil. Thereality, beauty, and importance ofeternal things, are out of view; theworld, therefore rises in magnitude, and seems clothed with new interestand its objects appear more desirable.Seriousness of spirit is now succeededby levity, and that tenderness of con-science which shuddered at the mere“appearance of evil,” by stupidity. The spirit of the world gains too greatascendancy; and conformity to thecorrupt maxims and customs of theworld becomes manifest. Even lawfulobjects are sought with too muchardor, and the too anxious desire to berich has often entangled the souls ofprofessors in many hurtful snares,

from which some are never extricat-ed, but their souls are finally piercedthrough with many sorrows, anddrowned in perdition.

When backsliding once begins, there is no knowing how far thedeclining Christian may depart fromGod. It cannot be a matter of muchsurprise, therefore, that in an evilhour, and under the power of tempta-tion, some insidious lust should pre-vail against him, and should carry himinto captivity. Indeed, such is thefrailty of the best men, that there is nosecurity for their not falling into grosssins, but in the conservative grace ofGod; and when Christians begin tobackslide they never recover them-selves, and return by their ownefforts; but by the kind interpositionof their faithful Shepherd, whose loveto his sheep leads him to leave theninety and nine, and to go into thewilderness to reclaim one strayinglamb. He makes his voice to be heardand recognized. If the common warn-ings of the word, and gentle sugges-tions of the Spirit have been neglect-ed, or resisted, it is usual with him toapply the rod. Providence is made tocooperate powerfully with grace; orrather is made a part of that system ofgracious means, which God makes useof to preserve and reclaim his erringpeople; and in the corrective dispen-sations of Providence, there can oftenbe remarked a connection betweenour sin and God’s chastisement. Oftenthe objects which have been the occa-sion of our sin, are somehow madethe instruments of our punishment; orin some way and by some associationobserved by us, God points as with afinger, by his dispensations of afflic-tion, to sins long since committed andperhaps almost forgotten. The richeswhich were too eagerly sought, “maketo themselves wings and fly away,” as

the eagle to heaven; or those forwhom these riches were so painfullyaccumulated, are taken away. If wemake an idol of any creature, God willoften judge it best to remove the stum-bling-block, and make room for him-self in our affections. Our heavenlyFather knows how to direct the rod soas to produce the desired effect. Heknows our frame, and can pierce thepoint of sensibility, and thus rouse usfrom our apathy, or from our dreamsof worldly pleasure and ambition. The backslider is now arrested in hisdownward course, is brought to pauseand consider his ways. He now seeshow far he has departed from theright path. He is convinced of his follyand sin, in forsaking “the fountain ofliving waters, and hewing out brokencisterns which can hold no water.”The convictions of sin in the case ofthe backslider, are often attended withkeener compunction and anguish, than were experienced under his firstawakening. Sometimes he almostdespairs of mercy; or if he dares tocherish a trembling hope of accep-tance, yet he expects no more kindand gracious dealings from his heav-enly Father. He calculates, like thereturning prodigal, to be placed on thefooting of “a hired servant,” ratherthan that of a son. But here again heis led by a path which he knew not; forGod not only “heals his backsliding,”but graciously forgives all his aggra-vated sins; receives him as a child, without upbraiding; draws him withloving cords, even the bands of a man,and says, “I will heal their backsliding,I will love them freely: for mine angeris turned away from him.”

This abounding of free grace andpardoning mercy to backslidingbelievers, is one of the most wonder-ful things in the way in which God

THE PRAYER OF FAITH

As mentioned in the hymn, “Whenmothers of Salem their childrenbrought to Jesus” they were setting anexample which many mothers havefollowed since (see Luke 18:15-16).How often it is said of one or another,“He was a child of many prayers”!When the story of God’s saving graceto a soul is told, how often is the con-fession made, “I had a praying moth-er.” Timothy had a praying mother;so had Augustine: so had JohnNewton, and countless others. TheHebrew mothers, bringing theirbabies and toddlers to the Lord JesusChrist, showed us that it is never toosoon to begin.

Mothers who pray for their childrenoften see their prayers answered, andtheir darlings growing up in the fearof the Lord. Eunice must have beenthe happy result of her care forTimothy’s spiritual welfare. Monica, after years of agonizing in prayer, sawher beloved son, Augustine, broughtinto the light. But it is not always theLord’s plan to let us know that ourprayers are granted. Sometimes theconversion of a prayed-for child doesnot take place until long after the

death of the praying mother. Yetmothers should never cease to pray infaith, though the answer may be longin coming.

There was once a poor womannamed Susan, left a widow with a littlegirl called Kitty. Susan was a trueChristian, and what she wanted mostfor her child was to see her too “inChrist.” She did all she could to teachthe little one of God and of His way ofsalvation, reading to her from theBible, and making her learn passagesby heart.

But Kitty showed no response. Shewas always impatient of her mother’swords and lessons, and would rush offto play with other children themoment she was free.

One Sunday, when Kitty was grow-ing older, she ran off with some otherrough children against her mother’swishes, and stayed all day. Susan wasgreatly worried, and, when the childturned up at last, she spoke seriouslyto her about her wrongdoing. ButKitty would not listen, and evenanswered back rudely. Seeing her sosulky and obstinate, Susan went awayto her bedroom, greatly distressed.Kneeling at her bed, with sobs andtears she besought the Lord for her lit-tle daughter, that He would changeher heart.

Left alone in the kitchen, Kittyheard her mother’s voice in the bed-room, and thought she must be tellingsomeone else of her naughtiness.Creeping to the door, she peepedthrough the keyhole. There wasnobody there besides her mother, andshe saw that she was praying for her.It was quite enough for Kitty; she ranoff at once to her playmates, and for-got the incident altogether.

Kitty grew up hard and willful, andwhen she married, she was a bad wifeto her husband and a bad mother toher children. Her godly mother Susandied soon after her marriage, prayingto the end in faith that Kitty might besaved.

My dear friend:I am speaking to all who class yourselves among those known as “awakened sin-

ners,” but I realize that the majority of you have only a vague idea of what it meansto be awakened. You are drifting along half asleep, half awake – drifting, with nodefinite purpose or aim directed toward getting to Christ. Now, what is the reasonfor such a state as you are in? It is that your heart is not opened and fully sensible tothe truth of your condition and the danger you abide in each moment you are out ofChrist.

Therefore, your greatest need – and the greatest need that all believers shouldpray for – is that YOUR HEART MAY BE OPENED. This is the work of the HolySpirit, and as you take time to read this and meditate on these thoughts, ask the Lordby His Holy Spirit to cause the Word to sink deep into your heart and open it to itsvery depths. If your heart is not broken up to receive the Word, it will continue to belike the first three kinds of ground in the Parable of the Sower.

Let’s look at the Sower (Matt.13:3-9) sowing the seed. As God’s messenger preach-es the Word, it is broadcast over the fields. It is the Seed of Life that springs up intoEternal Life that shall never perish. He sows sufficient seed, and he covers theentire field, even the wayside, the turn row. He sows good seed. The Scripture tellsus, that the Field is the world and the seed is the Word.

Are you the WAYSIDE heart that the seeds of the Word merely fall upon, andthere lie until the birds snatch them away? Let’s see if we can describe your WAY-SIDE heart. All week long your heart and mind is trodden back and forth, like a busythoroughfare, by wicked thoughts until the soft ground is packed and hardened bythe time the Lord’s Day morning arrives. Worldly thoughts rush to and fro, in themad frenzy of covetous desire to make money, get ahead, planning, scheming, maneuvering, pulling strings to close this deal, put over that plan. Maliciousthoughts are invited along the way to keep you company and entertain an emptyheart with a constant thoroughfare of wicked imaginations passing night and daythrough the unregenerate heart and mind. Then when the messenger pours out hisheart, entreating you to trust the Lord Jesus Christ, you say, “I can’t trust Him; Idon’t know how to trust Him.” The Word of Life falls on calloused hearts, and doesnot move you to embrace the Lord as your Lord. When he preaches on the wicked-ness of your heart, and the danger you are in, it may merely scratch the surface ofthe ground, which is but trampled again the moment the service is over, and you areno nearer a knowledge of your condition before God.

Perhaps your heart is a STONY heart. Among the stones, there is some good soil, soft ground, and the Word falls upon your heart, and you like it, you embrace it, youare drawn to it. You listen with eagerness, and nothing can keep you away from aservice. It seems that you are near the kingdom, as we say. Suddenly you becomeoffended, and your attention is drawn away to some so-called stumbling block, andthere you stay, hung up on some stone in the ground of your heart. It may be thatyou stumble over some sin in your life that lies buried beneath the surface, and you

say, “I just can’t give up this” – it may be cigarettes, or something else; “and Ican’t come over that.” It may be resentment against some individual, and allyou can do is dwell on that individual until you search out all his faults andclothe him with some great crime to justify you in not giving up this stone ofyour resentment against him. There are two marks by which you may knowwhether you are one of these unfruitful listeners: (1) Your ROCKY HEART willremain the same, because it has never been broken by conviction of sin; and(2) You will endure for a while, and then slowly drift away from whatever con-viction you may have had and drift back into a deeper state of rebellion.

But you may have come farther along the path of Holy Spirit conviction ofsin, where the Holy Spirit has plowed up the depths of your heart and pulledout the rocks and dug up the old stumps. You have given up everything thatthe Holy Spirit has put His finger on in cleaning up your wicked life. Youhave relinquished all your prejudices, jealousies, and resentments of everyindividual you know, and you have cleaned your life of every secret grudge, asthe Holy Spirit dug them out and showed them to you. The Word has come tomean something to you; it springs up in your heart. But the THORNS are alsospringing up – thorns of CARE that beset you on every hand and take yourmind from the Lord; thorns of PLANS you are making for the present and thefuture; thorns of ACTIVITIES you are loading your life down with; thorns ofBILLS you are burdening your budget with. These things crowd out the Wordand your meditation upon Him. They are distractions, which ultimatelychoke out the Lord, and which Satan uses to cheat you of the precious timethe Lord has given you to seek Him. Remember that thorns and flowers can-not grow in the same ground, and the thorns will always choke out the flow-ers. Pray to be made willing to leave all for Christ.

I pray that the Lord has broken up the fallow ground, dug out all the stones, and burned all the briers in your heart and prepared a good ground, because aBROKEN HEART alone can receive the good Word of God, the Living Word, who is Christ crucified, buried, and risen. When the Word is received, theHoly Spirit in you waters it with prayer until it brings forth fruit unto holiness.

My dear friend, examine your heart, whether ye be in the way of grace.Has the hard-beaten track of Satan and his wicked thoughts been broken up,and all those wicked thoughts cut off, all those selfish, rebellious, indepen-dent thoughts ceased? Has the stony ground been dug out, and all those sinsof the flesh, pride, hatred, jealousy, resentment all been dragged out and castaway? Have the thorns been cut down and the roots dug out that occupied theground of your heart and sapped up the time, energy, and means that shouldbe devoted to cultivating the Word of God? A broken, pulverized groundoffers no resistance, and therefore, it cannot resist the claims of the Lordshipof the Son of God. It cannot hold out against the love of the dying Saviour, and it cannot help but fall down upon the promises and receive the LivingWord, Christ Jesus your Lord. “A broken and a contrite heart I will notdespise,” saith the Lord Jehovah to every sinner. Cry for a broken heart, andthen let Him break it. “Every one that asketh receiveth ... ”

Face to FaceCarrie E. Breck, 1855-1934

“For now we see through a glass, dark-ly; but then face to face...”

(1 Corinthians 13:12)

The author, Carrie E. Breck, wasborn on January 22, 1855, at Walden,Vermont. Eight years later, her familymoved to Vineland, New Jersey. There she met her husband, a localfarmer, and lived most ofher life with him and theirfive daughters. In 1914,the family moved toPortland, Oregon, whereshe remained until herdeath on March 27, 1934.

Mrs. Breck was knownas a deeply-committedChris tian and a life-longPresbyterian. She wrotemore than 2,000 poems, anumber of which havebecome hymn texts, including “Shall I CrucifyMy Savior” and “Nailed tothe Cross.” Mrs. Breck hasleft the following account of her busylife as a wife, mother, and writer: “Ipenciled verses under all conditions;over a mending basket, with a baby onmy arm, and sometimes even whensweeping or washing dishes – mymind moved in poetic meter.”Interestingly, it was said of CarrieBreck that ‘’she could not carry a tuneand had no natural sense of pitch, butshe had a keen sense of rhythm andloved music.” Her spiritual gift wascomposing the words, the composingof the music she gladly left to others.

One of those music composers wasGrant Colfax Tullar, a Methodist min-ister. The circumstances of his col-laboration on the hymn “Face to Face”shows how God can bring together

writer and musician, words and musicto become a song that was destinedfor many a hymn book, and to bringmany a blessing.

Mr. Tullar was working with anevangelist during a busy gospel meet-ing in Rutherford, New Jersey, and anumber of them had gone to the localpastor’s home for supper one evening. As they all sat around the table, thepastor’s wife, knowing how muchGrant loved jams and jellies, passed

him the jar of jelly, whichat that point had very littlejelly left. Grant wrote, “AsI started to help myself Isaid, ‘So, this is all for me,is it?!’ At that instant, ‘allfor me’ as a theme for asong thrust itself upon mymind with such force thatI placed the dish again onthe table without takingany jelly, and excusingmyself, went to the pianoand wrote the melody anda few verses, the first onebeginning: ‘All for me theSavior suffered, All for me

He bled and died.’ The pastor asked ifhe might sing it at the service, thatnight, at which he told the people thestory of its writing.”

The next morning, as Tullar satdown and prepared to work on thewords of the song a bit more, the post-man came and delivered a special let-ter to him from Carrie E. Breck whohad heard he was there working witha crusade. She said she had written apoem and wanted to know if he couldput it to music. “As I started to readit,” Grant wrote, “I discovered that itexactly fitted my music written thenight before! No word of her poemnor my music needed to be changed!”That hymn was/is “Face To Face”

Praise in PoetryFace to Face

Carrie E. Breck (1898)

Face to face with Christ my Savior, Face to face – what will it be When with rapture I behold Him, Jesus Christ who died for me?

Chorus: Face to face I shall behold Him, Far beyond the starry sky; Face to face in all His glory, I shall see Him by and by!

Only faintly now I see Him With the darkened veil between, But a blessed day is coming When His glory shall be seen.

What rejoicing in His presence, When are banished grief and pain; When the crooked ways are straightened And the dark things shall be plain.

Face to face – oh, blissful moment! Face to face – to see and know; Face to face with my Redeemer, Jesus Christ who loves me so.

leads his blind people. When theywere looking for nothing but wrath, behold he shows his reconciled face, and manifests his pardoning mercywith all the tenderness of a kindfather. It is by such dispensations oflove and mercy, that God proves to ushow superior he is to all our highestconceptions. That he is God, and notman, is the reason why his people arenot consumed. “For my thoughts arenot your thoughts, neither are yourways my ways, saith the LORD. For asthe heavens are higher than the earth,so are my ways higher than yourways, and my thoughts than yourthoughts.”

It should not be inferred from whathas been said, that God leads all hispeople in precisely the same paths;for while there is generally a similari-ty, there is a particular diversity. Thecase of every Christian has probablysomething peculiar in it; both as itrelates to the work of grace withinhim, and to the dispensations ofProvidence without him. There aresome individuals who are led in a wayremarkably different from the com-mon paths of the flock. They are con-ducted through the world in a gentle, peaceful course; exposed but little tothe fierce blasts of adversity, withwhich others are assailed and almostoverwhelmed; and seem to be pre-served from those terrific conflicts, and satanic temptations, which othersare called to endure; while to othersthe path is hedged up and full of diffi-culties throughout. But often, whilethe first states of the pilgrimage aresmooth, the latter may be rough andpainful, or the reverse. During a longseason of prosperity and peace, thecup of afflictions is filling up ready tobe poured forth at a future day.Indeed, according to the order of nat-ural events, it must be so; for if all the

members of a large family are, formany years, spared, there are only somany more marks for the arrows offuture adversity; for all these are sub-ject to various misfortunes, and allthese must die, sooner or later, as wellas others. Those, therefore, whoseem for a while to be exempt fromadversity, will in due season havetheir full share; unless in mercy theyare “taken away from the evil tocome.”

5. Finally, the people of God areoften conducted through the “valleyand shadow of death” in an unexpect-ed manner. We learn, that ancientlythere were some “who were all theirlives subject to bondage, through fearof death;” whom Christ came to deliv-er. Well, that bondage of fear is stillexperienced by many sincere, buttimid Christians; and many anxiousthoughts are felt in relation to thisawful but inevitable event. Yet whenthe trying moment arrives – whendeath appears near, and the evidentsymptoms of approaching dissolutionare experienced – they find them-selves supported and comforted, farbeyond their highest expectation; and,as his last enemy comes nearer, heappears less formidable: his sting isextracted; and sometimes he seems toassume the face of an angel of light; sothat the dying Christian can often say,“O death, where is thy sting?” “For meto die is gain.” This peaceful end isnot reserved for those alone, whoappeared, in life, to possess a strongfaith, but doubting, despondingbelievers are often thus raised abovetheir gloomy fears, and are enabled totriumph in a dying hour. The faithfulShepherd of Israel is always present toguide the sheep of his purchasethrough this gloomy valley. Althoughthey are blind and know not the way,yet with his rod and his staff will he

both guide and protect them. Happythey who have God for their guide.

INFERENCES.1. We may learn from what has

been said, the end to be accomplishedby the various dispensations of God tohis people is, to humble their pride, todivest them of self-righteousness andself-confidence – to lead them toappreciate the grace and faithfulnessof the Savior; and to give exercise tothe several virtues of the Christianlife, and thus to prepare the soul forits heavenly state.

2. Believers, by being led in thisway, are instructed in the knowledgeof the deep depravity of their nature;the deceitfulness of the heart; theturpitude of sin, in its various formsand aspects; of the malice and subtletyof the grand adversary; and conse-quently of the riches of divine grace;the wonderful wisdom of the plan ofredemption; the tender sympathy, aswell as the faithful care, of theMediator; and of the desirableness ofa better rest than this world canafford. Our estimation of heavenlyjoys will have some relation to ourconflicts and afflictions upon earth. No doubt the gratitude of theredeemed, on Mount Zion, isincreased exceedingly, by the consid-eration that they “have come out ofgreat tribulation.”

3. Let us learn then to trust implicit-ly in the providence and in thepromises of a covenant-keeping God.His providence extends to the hairs ofour head, and his promises are all yeaand amen in Christ Jesus, and are“exceeding great and precious.” Weshould learn to live upon the promis-es, by the exercise of a lively faith andhope, trusting all our interests into thehands of a faithful Redeemer – confi-dently believing, that whatever hehath promised he will certainly per-form. Hath he begun a good work, and will he not accomplish it? Nonewho trust in him shall ever be disap-pointed; and the more confidently werely upon his word of promise, themore is he honored, and the moreacceptable are we in his sight.

Uncompromised Biblical Teaching

Letter of Encouragement

PennsylvaniaDear Pastor Pendarvis,

I am here and I am listening. Pleasedon’t grow weary in your well-doing.

Your daily messages are filled with loveand the urgency/importance of turningone’s heart toward Almighty God andreceiving Jesus Christ as Savior. You areconcerned about souls. You see the signsof the times, know the hour is late, andsense “time running out.” You are cryingout, ringing a bell, trying to wake peopleup and get their attention – hoping theirears are not stopped and that they willgrab onto TRUTH (God’s Word) whichwill put them on the right path whichleads to eternal life.

I encourage you in the Lord, brother, tocontinue doing what you know is God’scalling for your life – pleading to lostsouls everywhere within the sound of

your voice that God (His Word) is theanswer and Jesus Christ is the way. Oneplants; another waters; but God gives theincrease.

Every day multitudes face eternity. Wewho love the Lord are concerned about“souls” because God and Jesus are con-cerned about souls. We wish that soulswould be saved, and not lost (not go intoouter darkness, be separated from Godand be in Hell eternally). If this were notso important, Christ Jesus – the onlybegotten Son of God – would not haveneeded to go to Calvary in our place, giv-ing Himself as a sacrifice (the innocentLamb slain for the sins of the world).

Also, it is as you said, the churches(some...too many) are accepting perver-sions of the Truth. They have allowed theways and doctrines of the world to spin, twist, and water down God’s ETERNALWORD OF TRUTH (righteousness). Thus, doctrines of the unsaved – the worldly –have infested the churches.

Knowing what we know of God’s Word, and where the problems and rottenness isin our society/country, we know how topray. For our help cometh from the Lord. And we, as believers, wield a mightyweapon: prayer. God can move on heartsand defeat our foes. (See 2 Chron. 7:14)

There’s much work to do. Don’t go softnow. Stay strong in the Word of the Lord.

Kitty’s home was deep in the coun-try, far away from any place of wor-ship. Her mother’s Bible was putaway unread, and for some years,Kitty never heard a word of Scripture. Then a Christian man, who came tolive in the neighborhood, took pity onthe children in the cottages, andbegan a Sunday school. He had noplace for them to meet; but he gotmothers to consent to him holding theSunday school in the cottages byturns. Some parents were grateful, and were delighted that their housesshould be used. Kitty was at firstunwilling either to lend her room or tolet her children attend; but, when shefound what her neighbors felt, shegave in.

Most of the parents went with theirchildren each Sunday; but Kitty neverdid. When her turn came for theschool to meet in her house, shewalked about the room rattling potsand pans, and disturbing the class asmuch as possible! The teacherremonstrated in vain, but he did notlike to do so, so the Sunday schoolwent on meeting in Kitty’s housewhen her turn came, and every timethe woman walked about, making asmuch noise as possible.

After some months of this, suddenlythere was a change. During theschool, to everyone’s surprise, Kittystood quietly in the doorway, actuallylistening to what was said. The nextSunday she came with the children tothe neighbor’s house, and again stoodlistening. For several Sundays, thiswas repeated. At last she appearedone Sunday with Susan’s Bible; she satdown with the children, and read averse in turn with them.

The teacher had thought it best totake no notice of the change in Kitty’sbehavior, but when he found theneighbors saying what a completelydifferent woman she had become, he

spoke to Kitty, and asked her what hadhappened. “Yes, I am different,” shereplied; “it was Jane there that did it.”“Jane!” said the teacher, looking atKitty’s twelve-year-old daughter;“why, she hardly knows anything her-self!” “No,” said Kitty, “but it wassomething she did all the same. I sawher one day ‘peeping through the key-hole!’ ” Then she told the teacher ofher praying mother, and of the inci-dent I have told you at the beginning. The sight of her little girl at the key-hole brought back to her mind hermother’s prayers. With overwhelmingconviction, the remembrance of allher evil ways rushed in upon her. Shewondered how God could have sparedher from judgment for so long.Shutting herself into her own room,Kitty prayed, prayed for the first timein her life, that God would be mercifulto her, a sinner. “And God heard me,”she said earnestly; “He did not cast meoff, though I’ve been so wicked; andHe has answered my mother’s prayersat last, and given me a new heart.”

The change proved indeed to bereal. For the sake of the Savior whobore her sins in His own body on thetree, God forgave Kitty and clothedher in the righteousness of Christ.

So Susan’s prayers were granted.Perhaps you will say it was sad thatshe never knew on earth of theanswer being given. But we need notthink of that. The Lord knew whatwas best for Susan, as He does foreach of His children; and when Hetook her into His presence, she foundfulness of joy was her portion forever.

‘Tis not enough to say,I’m sorry and repent,

And then go on from day to dayJust as we always went.Repentance is to leave

The sins we loved before,And show that we in earnest grieve

By doing them no more.

syou see or find anyone in your church or family who wantsto be saved?” He answered, “I’ll have to say, no.” I standhere time after time and attempt to warn my hearers of thegreat judgment that is to come. I speak often of Hell and theseparation from God. It seems to have no effect on folkswho hear.

I think often of those who never hear a true Gospel mes-sage. Allow me to ask you how it is with your soul. Are youready to go out into eternity? Will it be to meet the Lord inHeaven or that other terrible place? I know that our Godwaits to be gracious, but He tells us that today is the day ofsalvation. I humbly ask you to pray for me here and for mybrethren who go out to our mission places to hold services.

Let me remind you of our Fall Fellowship Day, October 28,2018. I’ll be glad to see you. May our Lord bless and keepyou till I see you again.

Your Pastor,

Albert Pendarvis

What if we treated our Bible likewe treat our cell phone?

What if we carried it around in ourpurses or pockets?

What if we flipped through it severaltimes a day?

What if we turned back to go get it ifwe forgot it?

What if we used it to receive messagesfrom the text?

What if we treated it like we couldn’tlive without it?

What if we gave it to kids as gifts? What if we used it when we traveled? What if we used it in case of emer-

gency?

Is this something to make you go...hmm...where is my Bible?
