The Southwest Minnesota Arts Council Gallery will

feature the linoleum block prints of Nan Karr

Kaufenberg of Redwood Falls from January 8 through

February 27, 2015.

Nan Karr Kaufenberg began working with print

making in 1990 while taking art classes at Southwest

Minnesota State University. A1er experimenng with

etchings, wood and linoleum block prints, linoleum

block prinng became her medium of

choice. Kaufenberg explained that, “Linoleum works

best for carving the curved lines and details that fit

my drawing style and I can do my work in nearly any

locaon with a few simple tools.”

Early on she began adding watercolor to the block

prints. “The mul-step process of creang the prints

is very enjoyable,” Kaufenberg connued. “Once I

have the image drawn onto the linoleum block the next step is carving the image into the block. A1er the carving is

completed, I roll oil based ink onto the block and then place the paper over the inked block and either hand rub the print

with a wooden spoon or run the block and paper through my hand-cranked

linoleum block print press. Each print is handmade, whether I use the press or a

wooden spoon to rub the ink onto the paper. Once the ink is completely dry, I

apply the watercolor to each print. An edion of prints is based on the arst’s

proof; to maintain conformity.

“I enjoy simplifying scenes and images – deciding what to leave in and what to

take out. The best compliment I have had on my work was at an art fair when a

customer walked into my art tent and said, ‘It looks like the sun came out in here!’

She commented on the cheerful quality of my block prints. If I can bring a smile to

someone’s face, that’s a bonus to me.”

Kaufenberg has art degrees from the University of Minnesota and Southwest State

Minnesota University. She has received over 20 awards for her artwork at shows

and art fairs in the last 23 years and is a recipient of SW MN Arts Council Individual

Arst grants in 1993 and 2007. She has exhibited her work throughout Minnesota

and currently resides in Redwood Falls.

The public is invited to visit the SMAC art gallery for a recepon from 5:00 - 7:00

pm on Thursday, January 8, 2015. Enjoy live music during the recepon. Regular

Gallery hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to noon and 1:00 to 4:30 pm.

SlaytonSlaytonSlaytonSlayton’s new dinner theater, Spellbound s new dinner theater, Spellbound s new dinner theater, Spellbound s new dinner theater, Spellbound TheatricalsTheatricalsTheatricalsTheatricals Spellbound Theatricals is a new dinner theater housed at The Vine in Slayton,

MN. Its first producon was a modern language version of Shakespeare’s “The

Taming of the Shrew” in September 2014. “We aim to create entertainment

that smulates the senses as well as pushes the boundaries of the possible,”

says director Tom Hudson, who began the organizaon to provide an

opportunity for creave voices to be heard, grow, and collaborate. “We are

commi/ed to an exceponal standard of theatre and performance art. We take

fun very seriously! With each show and season we are raising our level of

producon and performance standard. We want to provide a home for theatre

arsts, keeping them local instead of losing them to the coasts.”

Spellbound encourages locals with an interest in theatre to come

audion. Hudson says, “We see ourselves as mentors to those beginning in the

theatre world.” In addion to actors, “skills such as lighng, sound boards, set

designers, costume designers, makeup arsts, as well seamstress/tailors are all

needed in each and every performance. We also contract with professional and

established actors, technicians and designers.”

Partnering with Spellbound in the dinner theater venture, The Vine (2630

Broadway Ave, Slayton), owned and operated by Debbie Peterson, provides

meals for all performances as well as a rehearsal and performance space for the

group. Peterson, who is also a Spellbound Theatricals board member, is excited

to combine delicious dinners with excing performances. Full meals are offered

at evening shows, with a lighter meal at manees. Boxed lunches will be offered

for parcipants in the youth theatre program, set to begin in the spring of 2015.

Spellbound’s youth programs will include its nonprofit Theatre Laboratory and

“Page to Stage,” a naonal literacy outreach program established by Ann

Wallace King of Sea/le, Washington, who is also involved with Spellbound.

“’Page to Stage’ benefits all school age students by taking literature, generally

classic, that has arsc or dramac merit and bringing it to life on stage,”

explains Hudson. “We provide the book to the students and then they are

brought in to see the story come to life.”

The four-week summer Theater Laboratory workshop is available for students

ages 8 to 18, who will work with professionals to create a full scale theatrical

staging of a classic tale. Along with performing, students will also parcipate in

hands-on workshops including: Animatronics, Stage Combat, Stage Makeup,

Stage Lighng, and Costume/Set Design.

Hudson says Spellbound’s biggest goal in the near future is to expand into more

space to offer even more

opons for local arsts. He also

hopes to increase the number

of performances for each

producon. “It has been a

lifelong dream of mine to bring

this sort of group together. The

speed at which it has grown and

blossomed has made me proud

to be a part of it.”

Read LocalRead LocalRead LocalRead Local Read Local, started by Steve Linstrom and the Marshall Area

Fine Arts Council (MAFAC), hopes to provide readers in

Southwest Minnesota access to locally-related, published

literature, along with a high level of reader-author inmacy.

Linstrom came up with the idea to help promote local

authors when he saw many of them searching for places to

sell their books, but not many local book stores. He

approached MAFAC, and with the help of an advisory

commi/ee, a selecon of published works is now available

for sale to the public at the MAFAC Arts Center (109 N Third

St, Marshall).

Presentaons by the authors will enhance readers’

experiences of the works, and MAFAC will coordinate with

other area organizaons for addional author appearances.

Read Local is also looking for other regional venues to sell

its book selecons, which will rotate every six months, with

new books arriving in May and November each year.

The Read Local partners hope the program will expand the

literature available to the public, encourage local authors to

produce commercially viable wring, and provide

educaonal opportunies about wring to young people

and the general public .
