Welcome back to the second half of the Lent term. We have had a very busy start to the year with, amongst other things, two Transition Afternoons, Kitchens of the Globe, Y11 Mock examinations, a Careers Day, Success Evening and the Dora Love Prize.
I was very proud of our Y9 and Y10 students who took part in the Dora Love Compeition and despite strong opposition came away with the top prize. The students had worked really hard on this project and the win was very well deserved. The board game designed by the students will be on display in the Museum of Migration in London.
One of my great pleasures as a Headteacher is to welcome guests and visitors into school. I enjoyed meeting so many parents at the Parents Open Forum and Kitchens of the Globe. It was also lovely to see so many primary students at our Harry Potter Evening and our Science Transition Event and I am delighted to hear from Suffolk County Council that 100 students will be joining us in Y7 in September.
Saxmundham Free School and the Seckford Education Trust are continuing to go from strength to strength. The national league tables have been published and I am very proud that of the 86 secondary schools in Suffolk Saxmundham Free School was the top performing school for English, top in Maths and Science for disadvantaged students and that overall our Progress 8 score was +0.16.
Our current Y11 are working very hard towards their GCSEs and I am confident that this year’s results will continue to build on last year’s success.

Careers DayOn Thursday 14 February we held our Careers Day for the whole School.
Local businesses had ‘Market Stalls’ in the Hall which the students were able to browse, and more employers came in the afternoon. Students often flourish in this environment and there were many positive interactions between our students and employers! We would like to extend a huge thank you to all those businesses that kindly gave up their time to attend. Amongst other activities the Students also worked on a ‘Barclays Online Reputation’ resource and completed the ‘I Could’ Buzz Quiz which helps students identify careers that may be suited to their strengths.
Dora Love PrizeHuge congratulations to the Dora Love Enrichment group who came first in the competition at the University of Essex on Wednesday 30 January 2019.The board game designed by the students will be on display in the Museum of Migration in London.

Harry Potter Book Night
Budding young wizards have enjoyed an evening of mystery and magic at the Saxmundham Free School Harry Potter Book Night, returning by popular demand.
On Tuesday 29 January, pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6 from primary schools across Suffolk gathered at the School Library for a range of enchanting Harry Potter themed activities, such as designing potions, decorating bookmarks, creating new Fantastic Beasts and testing Harry Potter knowledge through a quiz. The event was hosted by Saxmundham Free School students who also joined in the Wizard Chess.
Student Focus - Freddie N, Y8Freddie has passed his Rock Guitar Preliminary Grade Exam - he achieved a Distinction, including 30/30 for one of his pieces! Well done Freddie.
He did a lot of practice for this exam, including during break and lunch times, so he really did work hard for it.
Freddie is now going to skip Grade 1 and go straight onto Grade 2.
Brave The ShaveFive students have had their heads shaved to raise money for Macmillan Cancer. This was a very brave thing to do and we are proud that our students are so Community minded. Well done to Chloe-Ann, Emi, Bradley, Alice and Finley who have so far raised over £500. A very big thank you to ‘Heavenly Hair’ Saxmundham for helping with this fundraising event.
Enrichment: Ukelele
FootballWe have taken part in the annual B Team Football Six-A-Side tournaments over the last four weeks and although we had a mixed bag of results, all the students gave 100% and their attitude was brilliant. Well done to all involved.
Our Year 7/8 Boys Team played the first of many fixtures against Saint Felix School on the Wednesday 6 February. The team played fantastically well winning 3-0. The whole squad played their part with Filip scoring twice and the other from Nick. Well played boys!
RugbyFantastic effort from all the girls who attended the Rugby Tournament at Beccles Rugby Club on Tuesday 12 February, the large number of girls wanting to play meant that we were able to split into three teams, with Saxmundham Free School finishing top.
