Hlnts for the beginning

O Look for well- l i t subjects ful l of l i fe and contrast, and tryto avoid scenes of a monotonous nature or lacking incontrast.

Snapshots taken from a close-up posit ion are almost betterthan carefu l ly posed " fami ly a lbum" p ic tures or pure land-scape and architectural scenes without foreground.

A smal l number o f bo ld co lor sur faces wi l l make a bet terp ic turo than an abundance of confus ing deta i l .

Your " idea l sub ject " : a smal l group of persons actua l lyperforming some movement or task, taken from 5 to 7meters or 15' to 23' away, in mid-morning or afternoonwhen sunl ight is ava i lab le f rom the s ide, against a p la inbackground, incorporating some color contrast.

When using f lash, make sure you operate within thedistance range given by the guide number. Avoid scenesinvolving several planes of act ion dif fering distancesaway, and do not f lash frontal ly against ref lect ive surfaces.

Before the first picture

Inserl the batteryas described on page 26 (unless your photographic dealerhas already done this for you).

Take off the lens capand keep safely to hand; when the camera is not in use alwaysreplace cap 1, so that the battery does not run down and thelens is protected against dust and dirt .

Framing the subjectHold the camera as shown in Fig. H or J: keep the carryingloop over your wrist as a safety precaution. Hold the viewfindereyepiece 19 close to your eye, and do not obstruct the view-f inder windows 20 and 21 or the meter cel l window 22 withyour f ingers .

Frame the picture so that your subject is entirely within thebr ight I ine o f the v iewf inder -+ F ig . K. The surrounding area,outs ide the br ight l ine, w i l l he lp to fo l low fast sub jects movinginto and out of the frame.

Conseils pour le d6but

O Choisir des sujets assez rapproch6s, anim6s et bien 6clai-r6s; 6viter les sujets peu contrast6s et peu color6s.

O Les photos sur le vif pr ises de prds sont meil leures que les<photos-souvenirs> bien arrang6es et que les paysages oules photos d'architecture sans premier plan.

O Quelques grandes surfaces color6es valent mieux que tropde d6tai ls de toutes les couleurs.
