Introduction This document will guide you through setting up your existing phone to use VoIP services.

VoIP VoIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. VoIP uses an Internet connection to make and receive voice calls rather a traditional copper phone line, which gives it a few advantages. Phone calls are much cheaper as they are charged by data usage instead of call time and as communication is through a digital connection, the signal quality is clearer than a normal analogue signal.

The ATA The Analogue Telephone Adapter (ATA) converts the signal from your phone to a VoIP signal ready to send over the Internet. It also converts incoming VoIP data into an analogue signal your phone understands.

A VOIP Analogue Telephone Adapter

On the back of your ATA is a set of sockets that we plug various cables into. We’ll be connecting things up very shorty but for now lets go over what each does.

The connection ports on your ATA.

1- Line: This socket is not used. 2- Phone: This socket connects to your phone using a white phone cord (RJ11) 3- Ethernet: This is used to connect your ATA to a router or a computer. 4- Internet: This connects to your modem or router with an Ethernet cable to provide an

Internet connection to the ATA. 5- DC: The power supply for the ATA.

ATA Setup Let’s start by setting up your ATA. Firstly, find a location to place your ATA where you can easily access both your Internet connection (IE: Router or NTD) and your telephone. You will need to connect cables from the ATA to both your phone and Internet Connection so ensure it is reasonably close to both. Unplug any white phone cables (see below) from your phone that are connected into the wall. We will re connect these later on, for the moment they are best left unattached.

Next, plug your ATA’s power supply into the wall. A DC power supply looks something like this:

Next, connect the DC power pin into the power socket in your ATA. This will be a small round socket with a pin in the center labeled “DC 5V”.

Phone to ATA Now lets connect the ATA to your telephone. Using a white phone cord, connect the phone socket on your ATA to the phone line socket on your phone.

Connect Your ATA To Internet Next we will connect the ATA to the Internet. The steps can be a little bit different depending on the type of your Internet connection. If you have an ADSL, Fibre or Fixed Wireless Customers then use the “ADSL, Fibre or Fixed Wireless” section. Customers with an NBN or IPStar Satellite Internet service should use the “Satellite Services” section

ADSL, Fibre or Fixed Wireless Services Follow the instructions in this section if you have an ADSL, Fibre or Fixed Wireless Internet Connection. Firstly, find the router in your household. Your router provides the Internet Connection that a VoIP phone uses to transmit your telephone calls. Using a blue Ethernet cable, connect to any spare LAN port on your router.

With the other end of this cable, plug it into the Internet port on the ATA.

Satellite Services Use this section if you have either a NBN or IPStar satellite service. The setup for satellite service requires the ATA to connect directly to the NTD through its the Internet port. Devices such as routers or computers normally connected to the Internet port on your NTD need to be reconnected to the Ethernet port on the ATA.

Firstly, locate the Network Termination Device (NTD) in your household. The NTD’s for NBN and IPStar satellite services are shown below.

Next find the Ethernet/LAN port on your NTD as pictured below.

If this port has a blue Ethernet cable connected then locate the other end of it and disconnect it from the other device. We will reconnect this shortly. Using a blue Ethernet cord, plug an end into the LAN/Ethernet port of your NTD and connect the other end into the Internet port of your ATA.

Now reconnect your router by connecting a blue Ethernet cord from the Ethernet port on your ATA into the WAN port of your router.

Conclusion That’s it! You’ve now setup your home phone to use VoIP instead of a copper phone line. All calls through this phone will now go through your Internet connection.
