Welcome New Advertiser...Peoples Service!

The Scouts of Crescent have partnered with the City of Crescent to plant some raised beds at the Vet’s Monument on the highway south of town. Rick Reimer has generously built the first four of them. Dirt and mulch were filled in as part of the Beautification Day. The evening of Tuesday, May 22nd they all gathered to plant annuals, perennials, and some vegetables some of which were donated. Afterwards they grilled burgers donated by the Pink Poodle and hot dogs. Everyone brought a side dish along with their gardening tools and watering cans.

Jordyn Reimer and Anna Newby along with Anna’s grandpa, Paul Shomshor,

help with grass clippings.

Pulling weeds and planting was a joint effort. There were over 18 Scouts and

their families that took part.

In honor of all newlyweds and soon-to-be’s, give us your best marriage advice.

Question of the Month

Sandra Rowe: My best marriage advice would be: Romance, Respect, and Reality Cindy Shea: Don’t treat your spouse any less respectfully than you would your best friend. To journey of joy and love for a lifetime. Ella, age 6, and Tristin, age 4 from CECC, plan to get married “when they grow up.” In response to the question, Ella says, “Well, when you get married, you have to be happy ever after. It’s a rule.” Mildred’s words of wisdom on why her marriage lasted 60 years: “We have a 50-50 marriage. I cook it, he eats it. He raises the toilet seat, I lower it. He does the outside work, I do the inside work. I wash the windows inside, he doesn’t wash the windows outside. He doesn’t do windows. I make out the grocery list, and he doesn’t make out a grocery list. I drive, and he tells me how. If he needs help, he calls me. If I need help, I call him. We agree on religion and politics. After all these years, we enjoy going out to eat together, and we still enjoy each other’s company. It’s as simple as that.”

Next month’s question due by June 18th...

Loess Hills Neighborhood WatchRural Residents Crime Report • April 2012 • Information provided by Crimemapping.com Many rural residents are quite frankly fed up with crime in their community. Pottawattamie County Sheriffs’ need residents’ involvement to help fight rural crime; they need more eyes, more ears. It is never recommended residents take matters into their own hands. “Always” call law enforcement. The best way for a rural neighborhood to fight crime is with the people who live there. What’s Up at CECC?Submitted by Linda & Mindy Brewer

At last, summer! The preschool kids aren’t counting the days. They like school. And really, the school-age kids do, too. But they think they are expected to want school to be over, so they do. Kids who go to day care don’t get to sleep in. They have to be up and ready when their folks need to go to work. But at the center, they get to laze around a bit more; be outside, play in the water, play games and just sit and talk. There will be “lessons” and reading time, but we try to make it seem more like fun than work. Our preschool class did go to the Omaha Symphony youth concert at the end of April. The one we attended was at St Philip Neri School on 30th St. just across the Mormon Bridge. It’s always interesting to see a different school. And there was a park just across the street, so we had a picnic after the concert. It is always surprising to see how interested preschoolers are in the instruments and music of the orchestra. This summer, we are trying to find people who play instruments to come in and demonstrate them for our kids. If you play an instrument and would be willing to give us a brief concert (any day; any time), please give us a call. Our preschoolers, especially, would love it. Speaking of music and the arts… CECC got a grant from Promise Partners to facilitate enrichment classes as we did in the summers of 2010 and 2009. The emphasis, this summer, will be the arts. We pointed out in our application that the public schools are

having to cut back on arts program and how important learning about and participating in the arts is for young children. The classes are scheduled for Tuesday mornings at 10:00 in the community room beginning June 5th. They are open to all kids who choose to attend. Age guidelines might be from three to ten, or so. We hope if your child lives in Crescent, he/she could walk to the community room or if further away, someone would think it is important enough to bring him or her for that hour, once a week. There is no charge. We are contacting people in drama, music, dance and art to find teachers for the classes. We’ll have a specific schedule in June. If you or someone you know would be interested in teaching a class, contact us. There is a stipend. Our goal, for August, is to take the kids to a workshop at the Rose Theater and to have a “Crescent’s Got Talent” show at the end of the classes. Our thanks, this month, go to Mike and Jordan Harmon, Troy Thomason and Matt and Jace, and to Chris Brewer who moved three tons of wood chips on to the playground and painted and fixed our swings. We really appreciate the hard work! As always, if you need child care this summer or just want your kids out of the house and “doing something productive” a day or two a week, contact us. We offer weekly, daily and hourly rates. Stop by or e-mail [email protected] or www.cecckids.com.

You Know You’re Living in 2012 When...

• You accidentally enter your PIN on the microwave.

• You haven’t played solitaire with real cards in years.

• You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of three.

• You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you.

• Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they aren’t on Facebook.

• You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the groceries.

• Every commercial on television has a web site at the bottom of the screen.

• Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn’t even have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it.

• You get up in the morning and go on line before getting your coffee.

• You start tilting your head sideways to smile. : )

As an almost old person, I never really liked the terminology “Old People” but I am proud of it and this is why... Old People are easy to spot at sporting events. During the National Anthem, Old People remove their caps, cover their hearts, stand at attention and sing without embarrassment. They know the words and believe in them. Old People remember World War II and Hitler, Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Normandy, the Korean War, and the Cold War. They remember the 50 plus Peacekeeping Missions from 1945 to 2005, not to mention Vietnam. They remember the Atomic Age, the Jet Age and the Moon Landing. If you bump into an Old Person on the sidewalk they will apologize. If you pass an Old Person on the street, they will nod, or tip their cap. They’re are respectful and courtly to women and nice to strangers.

“Thank God for Old People”Submitted by One of Our Readers

Old People hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain the lady is on the inside for protection. Old People get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children and they don’t like any filth or dirty language on TV or in movies. Old People have moral courage and personal integrity. They seldom brag unless it’s about their children, grandchildren or pets. It’s the Old People who know our great country is protected, not by politicians, but by the young men and women in the military serving our country. This country needs Old People with their work ethic, sense of responsibility, pride in their country, and decent values. Thank God for Old People. We need to tip our hats to them.

Library Story Time Returns to Crescent One of the Council Bluffs Library children’s librarians will, once again, be coming to Crescent once a week to tell stories to all kids that want to come. The time will be Thursdays at 11:30 in the community room of the Fire Barn. Story time will begin June 7 and continue through June and July. Crescent is the only place outside of Council Bluffs where they will offer this service. So we are very lucky, and all kids in town (and out of town) are invited to come to the community room for a half hour of fun stories and other activities.

TV...If kids are entertained by

have with twenty-six.

In a National School Lunch Program survey, nearly 70% of American school students say pizza is their favorite entrée... corn their favorite vegetable... and cookies their favorite dessert.

Rick Reimer still holds the Crescent Elementary 50-yard-dash record from 1977.

In ancient Greece, it was believed the aromatic herb rosemary fortified the brain and enhanced memory, so students would wear rosemary sprigs in their hair to enhance performance on their exams. The Latin name “Ros Maris” means “Dew of the Sea,” referring to the Mediterranean areas where it grows wild in abundance.

If someone calls you a “polymath,” should you be insulted? No... you should thank them! You’re being called a person of great or varied learning!

Crescent Elementary is one of the top rated schools in the Council Bluffs school district. Learn it! Love it! Support it!

Attorneys and doctors each have an average of 15,000 words in their vocabulary. Skilled workers without a college education use about 5,000 to 7,000 words.

Gene Simmons, best known as the “tongue-wagging demon” of the shock-rock group Kiss, holds a B.A. in education and speaks four languages.

At Crescent Elementary the favorite lunch menu item is pizza of any kind! Least favorite...turkey patty.

Public school teachers in New Jersey earn the highest average salary in the nation: $53,300. Lowest? South Dakota with an average $30,300. The national average is $43,300.

12,460 cartons of milk are consumed in one school year at Crescent Elementary (a huge part of it is chocolate).

850,000 students are currently home-schooled. That’s 2% of all students ages 5 to 17.
