Our theme for the December meeting will be “Holiday Magic.” It can be any holiday you want. If you don’t have anything in that area, bring another effect and after we go around and do the Holiday Magic, we’ll go back around for other performances. This will be my last letter as President of Ring 81. To prosper, the Ring needs more members willing to volunteer, more members who will bring in new prospective members, and more members who will perform at our meetings. I wish you all Happy Holidays! Arnie Kropf (aka The Great Arnoldo)

BURLINGTON HULL

When I was a kid, one of the first items acquired was a deck of cards called a “Svengali Deck.” It’s a deck with one card repeated, alternating with different cards and the repeated card is trimmed short so many fascinating effects can be done with it. Pitchmen at fairs & carnivals made a living presenting effects with the deck and Marshall Brodien in the 1960's creat-ed a sensation with his "TV Magic Cards" commercials'. In 1909 Burling Hull patented this trick and claimed to be its inventor. There has always been considerable disagree-ment about his claim and many of his detractors say that the

trick was around long before he was born. Hull, however, did come up with the idea of using “roughing fluid” so the duplicates would stick and the effect could work more smoothly. He also invented more than 50 tricks that could be performed with the deck. Some still said, however, he should have called himself “Hurling Bull”! He was born September 9, 1889, as Burlingame Gilbert Gault Hull. He lived much of his life in DeLand, Florida. In his teens he called himself Clif Westfield and performed a manipulation act as well as doing ventriloquism, chapeaugraphy, shad-owgraphy and even dancing. His career blossomed and he also began to write about magic and invent and perfect many magic effects. He wrote extensively about card effects, mentalism, escapes, razor blade swallowing, billiard ball manipulation and also publicity and showmanship. Over the years he used a variety of names: “Volta,” “Volta the Great,” and “The White Wizard.” (He used this name during his early ca-reer when he performed dressed totally in white.) Hull was shrewd as a businessman and often could be found at magic conven-tions doing presentations about business methods for magicians. He was also ex-tremely active as a proponent of the use of patents and copyrights to protect original magic gimmicks and written work. Ironically, Hull was not averse to lifting material from other magicians and publishing it as his own — if he felt they had stolen from him! Among his 52 published books was the popular 33 Rope Ties and Chain Re-leases, still a classic among escapists though it was written in 1915. He was also au-thor of Sealed Mysteries and Sleights; The Encyclopedia of Stage Illusions; and How to Answer Questions for Crystal Gazing and Mind Reading Acts. Much later in his life he published another classic: a three volume The Ency-clopedic Dictionary of Mentalism (1961). The book was (and probably still remains) the largest compilation of every aspect of mentalism, including gimmicks, effects, specific patter and special sleights. Hull had an ongoing feud with the dealer mental-ist Robert A. Nelson and in his written work would lambaste Nelson for teaching men-talism tricks to gamblers and racketeers to enable them to cheat the public. Late in his life his eyesight began to fail although he continued to work on books, dictating the text. His good friend Bev Bergeron (who worked as Rebo the clown on Mark Wilson’s television show) helped him move out of his house and into a nursing home. He died on October 19, 1982, after reaching the age of 93. Abridged and edited by Gale Molovinsky from The Greats of Magic by George Schiller.
