Minister Byrne was invited by Talbot Grove Executive Director, Con Cremin, who gave her a guided tour and introduced her to key members of the team and those receiving treatment at the centre. Talbot Grove was recently awarded the prestigious ISO 9001: 2008 for excellence in Systems & Processes supporting the delivery of services, and also reaccredited with the CHKS Accreditation Award for Healthcare. Con Cremin outlined to Minister Byrne the significance of these awards and the high standard of treatment on offer at Talbot Grove. He also outlined to Minister Byrne their major development plans for new facilities on their grounds in Castleisland, which will ensure the continuity of this valuable service for future generations and emerging needs. Minister Byrne committed her support to Talbot Grove in accessing Capital Funding from the State toward the development plans. The only facility of its kind in the South West

of Ireland, Talbot Grove, was established in 1993 to provide a local residential service for people with addictions, including alcohol, gambling, drugs and other related issues and to support families living with addiction. Talbot Grove provides a pleasant, private and peaceful therapeutic environment in a homely environment surrounded by secluded gardens. All treatments are broadly based on a combination of the Minnesota Model of Addiction Treatment and the 12 Step Approach originally developed by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Services are delivered by a team of professionally qualified & highly

experienced Addiction Counsellors. Talbot Grove has also been selected for the second year running as one of the principal charities of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle to help with fundraising for the planned development. For more information visit: www.talbotgrove.ie

There was no shortage of interest in this weeks open day at the Kerry College of Further Education in Tralee as hundreds of students from across Kerry travelled to see what would be in store for them, should they opt for the College next September.Vice Principal Mary Murphy was delighted with the event in particular a special evening for parents which was held for the first time.“It was our first time running an Information Evening for Parents of School Leavers and it was refreshing to see the interest by

parents in options outside the Leaving Cert points system”Feedback from parents was very positive and parents were particularly impressed with the range of programmes on offer. “They very much appreciated being informed of how the further education programmes here at KCFE can allow students to access very high point courses in Universities and Institutes of Technology which may otherwise prove difficult to secure if dependent on performance in the traditional leaving cert.”There was a very busy day ahead

for their Open day, which attracted hundreds of students from across the Kingdom and beyond.“Our Open Day was by far the most well attended one we have ever held. We had the Spinnies from Spin South West here on Thursday morning and of course local Radio Kerry’s Brendan Fuller with his live Outside Broadcast on the Afternoon Show. Most secondary schools in the county supported the event with bus loads of school leavers arriving throughout the day to learn all about the exciting range of options, view the facilities and explore the workshops.”

“Overall we can safely say that hundreds passed through in what was a day that evidenced massive demand for post leaving cert courses in Kerry.”Carmel Kelly, Acting Principal and the management team at the college wish to thank all who made it a very successful event but in particular to all those who attended. If you missed the event the college prospectus is available from the college office on 066 7121741 and applications for courses are now being taken online at www.kerryfe.ie.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE LEADS WAY IN NATIONAL COMPETITIONTransition year students of Castleisland Community College are presently leading the country in the Water Explorer Competition. The competition is open to both primary and secondary schools and is about rising awareness of water conservation and issues relevant to water. This is an international competition that takes place amongst 11 countries and Castleisland Community College is presently in 4th position internationally. The competition consists of 24 challenges and is divided into 4 four areas. Marks are awarded after each challenge. The first is called fresh water and it involves examining the quality of water in the area. The students have conducted a field trip to the River Maine to investigate the plant and animal life found there. They have debated the use of chemicals in farming and they will be responsible for planting and looking after herbs that will be used in home economices classes. The water cycle, water treatment and purification has also been explored. The second area relates to global water and this refers to the impact of climate change here in Ireland where we experience flooding and in developing countries that are affected by drought.

Secret water discovers where water is hiding in what we eat, wear and use every day. It examines the amount of water used in food production and manufacturing. They have learnt that recycled paper uses 60% less energy and 80% less water. There is 4 times more water used to produce beef than chicken and 5 times more water used to produce coffee than tea. It

takes 2,500 litres of water of water to produce a T shirt. The final area is precious water where students examine ways to stop wasting water to save energy, money and our planet e.g. turn off taps properly, report dripping taps, at home turn off the tap while brushing your teeth . The washing machine and dishwasher should only be used when full. They have presented workshops to all 1st 2nd and 3rd years regarding their findings which is helping students with Biology, Home Economics, Geography , CSPE and Irish included as they have composed a rap as Gaeilge which they have taught to 1st 2nd and 3rd year students! They are making water pumps in construction studies to show how water is obtained in the developing world and they will be making ornaments in Engineering from empty tin cans that they found as rubbish by the River Maine.

The final assessment for the competition will be in April. The school has already been awarded a camera for their excellent efforts. It is certainly an enjoyable, exciting and fun way to learn about the topic.

ST. PATRICK’S LAUNCH ITS ‘MARCH TO FITNESS PROGRAMME’On Monday last March 6th Bank of Ireland’s Schools Officer and Kerry Footballer Shane Enright Launched the school’s ‘March to Fitness’ Programme. For the month of March, the school will be focusing on the physical activity levels and nutrition of all its first year students. We hope to increase their physical activity levels and improve their knowledge of healthy eating throughout the month. We will carry out a standard fitness test at the beginning of the month and complete a retest at the end of the 4 weeks to see if there were improvements. Results will not be published. This is simply for students to see if they benefited from adapting a slightly healthier lifestyle in school. We hope that this initiative will prepare and encourage all students to follow an active and healthy lifestyle into the future. Each week we will focus on a particular aspect of fitness and each day we will challenge the students to complete tasks relating to health and fitness. As well as this, students will set weekly goals that they will hope to achieve. It would be great if each household got behind this initiative for the month of March and encourage the students to participate to the best of their ability. Focus for each weekWeek 1 (Beginning March 6th) – Increasing

Physical Activity LevelsWeek 2 (Beginning March 13th) – Fruit & Veg IntakeWeek 3 (Beginning March 20th) – Drinking WaterWeek 4 (Beginning March 27th) – Healthy Food & Drink SwapsActivities throughout the month will include: 12 at 12 (12 mins activity at 12:12), 5k run/walk, make your own lunch for a week, make healthy snacks for break time, extended time for PE, talk from a nutritionist, advice from Kerry footballer Darren O’ Sullivan, fruit eating challenge, calculating their resting heart rate, and much more...The following are results found on Irish post primary students over the past 5 years:• 15-16 year olds already show signs of heart disease due to poor fitness. • Physical fitness can benefit academic performance and it is also essential for long-term health.• 75% of unfit 15-year-old boys had high blood pressure and 62% were at a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. According to Professor Niall Moyna, “Exercise should be viewed as medicine, as it can positively influence current and future physical and mental health. Greater emphasis should

be placed on promoting physical activity and other healthy lifestyle behaviours among students”.A study by experts in Dublin City University found that “almost 90% of Irish children are insufficiently active”

SYMPATHYSincere sympathy is extended to Maxi Fleming on the death of her husband the late Tony Fleming, Currow Village and to their daughters Liz, Maura and Eimear. Tony’s funeral was from Tangney’s Funeral Home, Castleisland to the Church of The Immaculate Conception, Currow on Wednesday evening last and on Thursday following his Funeral Mass Tony was laid to rest in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Killeentierna. Sympathy is also extended to Tony’s sister Mai Kinane, to his sons in law Eoin and Kevin, to his Grandchildren Conall, Daniel, Katie and Lucy, to his brothers in law and all extended family, neighbours and friends. The late Tony Fleming was a wonderful neighbour always willing to help out in times of need, he was a modern farmer in his time who together with his wife Maxi bred Pedigree Friesian’s that were not only prize winners but sought after by farmers from all over the Country.Tony was also an agricultural contractor and himself and his business partner James Mahony from Dromulton were the first to buy all the modern machinery that became available on the market from ploughs to combined harvesters and everything in-between, working night and day they knew the neighbours lands so well that they only had to be asked to do a job and when many a farmer checked his field the following day he discovered the ploughing, rotovating or harrowing had been done or the field of hay cut and no job was too large or too small.Times were hard for both farmers and machine operators and in a lot of cases the creamery cheque had to stretch to try and pay off many bills and Tony never demanded payment from anyone that was making an effort to pay for

work completed, if there was a death in the family that year he simply refused to accept payment and in many cases wrote off the entire bill.Tony Fleming was a gentleman that will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.Sympathy is also extended to Mai O’Connor on the death of her husband the late Michael (Mick Parick) O’Connor Mount, Scartaglen and to their family William, Bridget (Clarke), Marguerite (Howard), Marie (O’Shea) and Maurice, to his brother Jim and sister Hannah Mai, to his grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, and all extended family, relations and friends. Mr. O’Connors funeral was from Daly’s Funeral Home to the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Scartaglen on Sunday last and following his Funeral Mass on Monday, Mr. O’Connor was laid to rest in Scartaglen Cemetery.

SENIOR NEWSThe Senior Game V Kerins O’Rahillys was cancelled due to weather conditions. The Senior League commences Sunday 19th March at 2pm with Ballymac taking on Dromid Pearses at home.

MINOR MATCH REPORTCHURCHILL 0-9 BALLYMAC 2-7WE travelled to Churchill last Saturday evening for our first County League fixture and returned with 2 valuable league points.A strong wind blew across the field and made conditions difficult for both teams.Fine performances by captain Dara Reagan and Tadhg Brick among others helped us to this victory. The home side pointed early on, and minutes later Dara Reagan won possession took a return pass from Barry Lyons and pointed.Dara Broderick was fouled and Dara Reagan pointed from the free. Barry pointed from a Dylan Moriarty pass while at the other end a fine block by Tadhg prevented a certain score.Cathal Dunne drove upfield and pointed while Churchill pointed two frees.Dara Reagans goalbound effort was blocked but Tadhg Brick was on hand to flick to the net.Keelan Brosnan was fouled and D Reagan pointed with Churchill also pointing. Half time score Ballymac 1-5 Churchill 0-4.The Home side started the second half in style kicking 2 points inside the first 5 minutes.Keelan picked out Barry with a fine pass and when he was fouled D Reagan pointed.Cathal again went upfield passed to Dylan who in turn put Diarmuid Lynch through for a fine point.Churchill responded with two points to leave us ahead 1-7 to 0-8 midway through the half.Again Churchill pointed with about 12 mns

left to set up an exciting finish. With about six minutes remaining Dara Chawke powered through for a goal after which fine defensive work prevented our opponents scoring again and got our league campaign off to a great start..We are due to travel to Glenfesk next Saturday evening for the next game in this competition.

OUTLOOK SPORTS NEWS

Others might talk the talk but Castleisland race walker has being walking the walk for almost 40 years. Donal Barry caught up with Pat Murphy as he prepares to represent Ireland in the world Athletics masters championships in Daegu in South Korea next week. The fourth largest city in South Korea with a population of 2.5 million, which translates as “‘large hill’, is just another part of the world that Murphy will try to conquer. Many of us will look back at our various sports careers and remember the good old days, this is not yet the case for Castleisland plumber Pat Murphy who is still creating memories and breaking records in a sport, he calls a “friend”.It is a relationship he has carried on since his first county final race in 1978, inspired by watching the 1976 Olympics. “I did a bit of cross country and did a little bit of basketball, but then one night I saw race walking on the Television at the 1976 Olympics and said I’d love to give that a go and I’m at it ever since”Having researched a little more it was time for Murphy’s first outing competitively and while he was some way off the then Olympic champions Daniel Bautista of Mexico time of 1:24:40, the bug had bitten.“This is my 39th year race walking; my first race ever was the county finals at the old grass track in St Johns Tralee. It’s a long time ago and I’m walking since”With over 300 national, European and world medal medals won across his long career, Pat is still eager for more and reckons that it is his competitive streak, that has kept him in a sport that is as dear to him as a good friend is.The longevity of such a career has seen him encounter many friends and competitors along the way.At national level, Murphy in the height of his senior career was spoken of as an Olympian and while he made times good enough for two Olympics, circumstances transpired against his dream as he watched fellow competitor Jim McDonald come home in sixth in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. It was a golden time in walking with Murphy, McDonald from New Ross and Michael Lane from Mullingar all pushing the sport to new heights as they proved to be the Kelly and Roche of the cycling worlds answer to race walking. Lane would retire in 1993 with injury and later become national coach to a number of Irish athletes, including Gillian O’Sullivan at national level. It was also a golden time for Kerry Athletics While Murphy was hitting his peak, his Kerry

colleagues John Griffin, Jerry Kieran and John Lenihan were also in their prime representing Ireland with regularity.Still reminiscing is not part of Murphy’s world as he prepares and plans his 15-hour trip to South Korea.“I fly from Cork to Heathrow and from there all the way to Seoul, with a third flight from Seoul to Deagu. It’s a 15 hour trip, so recovery will be important”Murphy will arrive on St Patricks Day, and while he has everything researched and prepared to a tee, he is largely heading into the unknown, when it comes to seeing the line up. “When you qualify, you have to give your name and current PB, so heading into the event each athlete is well aware of their opponents, however on this occasion the hosts will have 12 athletes in the field with nothing known about them as they have all yet to set a time this year.”It’s an uncertainly that troubles Murphy but he is focusing on his own training scheme and has worked hard to get to a level, where he feels competitive to be facing down a field, with a former Olympic champion, a string of former world champions along with a handful

more national champions from across the globe.Murphy does not feel that his age (56) in any way inhibits him from his sport and with the country on a get active craze with a mushrooming of Couch to 5k runs, people taking up cycling or even heading to the Gym, for Murphy he is doing something that he loves.“Whether your eight or eighty, it about being competitive and pushing yourself, it’s about doing your best and wanting to win” and it’s that sprit that has Murphy in peak condition.“There are some outstanding people around the world, when you see an 85 year old running a marathon in 3 hours 50 minutes, a few weeks ago a great Irish Master Hugh Gallagher died age 92 and he had planned to go to South Korea as well.”For Murphy training is part of his daily life as he balances his full time job as a Plumber and once a week he runs a training circuit in the Castleisland Community Centre, the money he earns helps finance his participations in his sport. Race Walking would appear to be a lonely life but for Murphy it is something that he loves and if it is lapping his favourite route along the river walk in Castleisland, heading into a stiff wind along Inch Beach or simply coming down the back straight in a national championship, Murphy is at his happiest. To date Pat Murphy has walked over 260,000 race miles in his career, in simple terms the distance from the Earth to the Moon and it is over the moon he will be if he brings back a world title.

This game was a trilling contest with both teams playing some great football and battling hard to pick up their first win of the season. Both teams cancelled each other out in the opening 15 minutes with some good point’s 3 of which coming from Brosna/knocks John Walsh. However two late goals from St Pats towards the end of the half gave them some breathing space but Brosna responded with a goal of their own from John Bell just before the referee blew the half time whistle. The second half proved to be a very even contest with no team able to gain an advantage. However in the closing minutes of the game a great goal from Paul Walsh followed by two long range points from Patrick Moriarty looked to have given Brosna/Knock the victory but St Pats fought back and scored two late points to ensure they left Brosna with a point. Brosna/Knock will now play St Michael’s Foilmore on the 11th of March at home.

A FEW UNUSUAL USES FOR GARLIC*Get Rid of Acne. Cut a clove of garlic in half and rub it over the affected area. Done regularly, the antibacterial properties found in garlic cloves will help to clear up your complexion.*Treat Cold Sores. Like in treating acne, cut a clove of garlic in half and apply it directly to the sore. It might sting a little, but it’s been shown to work just as effectively as commercial treatments for getting rid of those unsightly sores.*Treat Athlete’s Foot. If there’s anything garlic doesn’t like, it’s fungus, so treating your athlete’s foot with the stuff works wonders! Crush a couple of cloves and toss them in a foot bath filled with warm water. Soak for about half an hour.*Use as a Pesticide in your Garden. Skip those harmful commercial pesticides and use a natural, DIY method with garlic instead! Click here for instructions.Warning: Don’t Feed Your Pets Garlic as it can be very toxic for animals.

BLIND DOG LOST IN CALIFORNIA WOODS FOR 7 DAYSA blind dog that wandered away from her family’s California home and into the nearby woods was found seven days later in the Santa Cruz Mountains.Beth Cole of Boulder Creek said her family’s blind Labrador retriever, Sage, wandered away on Feb. 24th after her family believed the dog had been brought in for the night. For the next seven days, a search and rescue effort took off as the neighbours tried everything in their power to locate the lost dog without success. Then Daniel Estrada, their next door neighbour went out on a hike with his friend Vincent Lopez, they were no longer actively searching for Sage but simply enjoying a day in the countryside when Mr. Estrada spotted a white object that he assumed was a rubbish bag in a nearby stream, but when he got closer realised it was Sage. The firefighter-paramedic for the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department believed Sage was dead and was preparing to get in the water and drag her body out of the stream when his friend noticed Sage lift her head.“Dude, she’s alive,” Mr. Lopez yelled.“At that moment, sadness was gone,” Mr. Estrada said. “I ran over to her. I was hugging her and giving her kisses.”Sage was too exhausted to walk, so Mr. Estrada hoisted her on his shoulders and carried her about 100 yards through the stream and then another 100 yards up a heavily-wooded hill.A joyous reunion full of hugs took place between Sage and her owners and Mr. Estrada said “There was no words to explain it. Everyone in the community was overwhelmed with joy.”The family offered Mr Estrada a $1,000 reward, but he declined the offer, insisting that the money be donated to an animal welfare group instead.

12-YEAR-OLD GIRL HAS COLLECTED PILES OF COATS FOR THE HOMELESSAt just 9 years of age and with the help of a little red wagon, Makenna Breading-Goodrich has already started a movement to help the homeless in her community.Three and a half years ago, the Arizona 7th-grader went to her parents with the idea to collect coats for the homeless. It occurred to her after she watched a show about the harsh realities of not having a roof over your head during the cold winter months her mother said.in Oct. 2013, Makenna asked her parents to print out 50 fliers she created, which she then put up around her hometown of Surprise, Arizona. She also went door-to-door, letting neighbours know she’d be back in a couple weeks to pick up any spare jackets.About two weeks later, Makenna wheeled her little red Radio Flyer wagon around town and collected about 200 coats to give to the Phoenix Rescue Mission.Since then, the effort has taken off. In 2015, she collected around 500 coats, and last year, she received 872, plus 300 other donated items, including hats, gloves, blankets, sweatshirts and undergarments.

AUTHORITIES DENY LICENSE RENEWAL FOR HORRIFIC ZOO WHERE OVER 500 ANIMALS DIEDIn just four years alone from 2013-2016, 486 innocent animals died at South Lakes Safari Zoo in Dalton, Cumbria in North West England. The Captive Animals’ Protection Society (CAPS’) representatives say the crimes at the zoo are some of the absolute worst cases of animal cruelty they have seen in sixty years.Thankfully, after CAPS’s investigations and persistent outcries from concerned animal lovers, this terrible facility has had its renewal license denied. The council describes the zoo’s owner, David Gill, as “not a fit and suitable

person” to manage the facilities and properly care for the animals.Although this is a major victory for animal rights, the fight has not ended. Gill still has the option to appeal this license denial.

TRUCKERS FOUND A DEHYDRATED, LOST BABY ELEPHANTWhen a group of truckers were on their way to deliver cargo to Nata in Botswana, they had to stop due to a bridge being washed away by heavy rains and a baby elephant came out from the bushes to say hello and see if he could hitch a ride. The men looked for the baby elephant’s herd but there were no other elephants in sight. The men gave the three-week-old baby some water and also called the nearest animal sanctuary for help.Once the bridge was repaired, the truckers loaded up their newest member and headed to the Botswana Elephant Sanctuary to deliver the young elephant. With elephants facing the looming threat of extinction, every single individual that can be saved is a huge win for the entire population.
