Dear School

Family, I have really appreciated

being back and spending

time at each of our 3

Campuses. It has been

another very busy fortnight as I look at all the

activities happening in the life of Temple. We have

had our Calling and Departure Ceremonies for The

Rite Journey, for Year 9 students at each Campus.

I attended the ceremony for the Mile End, Year 9

Students, held at sunrise on the Glenelg foreshore.

It was a very significant and special time for

families.

Our Athletics Day was fantastic and it is the only

event for the year where all the students and staff

from Temple come together. It was a historic event

as this year we also had Grade 7 students from

Sunrise Paradise and Fullarton schools, and we

had Year 7 and 8 students from Sunrise Whyalla

and Naracoorte. I would like to really thank our

Sports Coordinators Mrs Stephanie Sutherland

from Mile End, Mr Dan Kerr from Paralowie and Mr

Caleb Cure from Marion for their organisation of the

day. I would also like to thank all the staff and

students on their efforts throughout the day.

Our Prefects have recently represented Temple at

the AISSA Commencement Service held at Walford

Anglican School for Girls. This was a very Christ

centred service to celebrate the beginning of the

school year for the Independent Schools and was

attended by student leaders from many Schools.

The Head Prefects and Deputy Head Prefects have

also attended the Compass Student Leadership

Conference held in Canberra. This was a great

opportunity for them to connect with student

leaders from Christian Schools from all over

Australia. It is an exceptional conference and is

organised by Mr Mark Ryan who is the CSA

Executive Officer for SA.

Calling and Departure Dawn Ceremony On Friday, February 28, at 6:30 am Year 9 students and their parents

gathered at Moseley Square, Glenelg. It was The Rite Journey Calling

and Departure Dawn Ceremony, an event marking the beginning of the

journey into adulthood for our Year 9 students.

The ceremony opened with worship, honouring God and His incredible

favour and blessings. Students then reflected on their childhood and the

important role parents have played in their lives. Parents also

reminisced on fond memories of their child and their hopes and dreams

for their future.

As we celebrated childhood we explored the child-like qualities we want

to take into adulthood, like a child-like sense of adventure, a child-like

fun and a child-like faith. We contrasted this with childish behaviours

and attitudes that hold us back and that must be left behind in order to

become mature adults, such as losing one’s temper and gossiping

about others. Each student was given a shell to represent the childish

behaviour they identified as holding them back. It was a powerful

moment when students lined the jetty to toss away this shell,

symbolising their commitment to leaving this childish behaviour behind.

As the sun rose around us we were reminded of new beginnings and

Jesus' words, you are the light of the world. We inspire our young

people to be the men and women God created them to be, full of faith,

courage and compassion.

Students and parents had prepared heart felt letters of appreciation for

each other prior to the morning which they exchanged with each other

after the shell toss. It was a blessing to witness families sharing these

letters. I trust that this time is treasured by families for years to come.

The Year 9s are well and truly on their journey into adulthood.

Alison Cocks, Year 9 Coordinator

Year 8 Camp 2020 – Newsletter Article

In Week 5 of Term 1, our Year 8 2020 cohort set off for their three-day

camp down the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula. The camp was run in

partnership with Wilderness Outdoor Escape Adventures, who

enabled our students to take new risks and challenge themselves in

outdoor, aquatic environments.

On Wednesday and Thursday of the camp, students participated in

various activities at the Second Valley, Middleton and Goolwa

locations (some of South Australia’s most picturesque). Despite some

initial rain and clouds, students jumped straight into these activities

with enthusiasm and passion! From learning to surf, hiking along the

dunes and mountains of seaweed, to snorkelling, fishing along the

Second Valley jetty, rock pooling and looking for crabs, to the difficult

but riveting raft-making competition, all of our Year 8’s gave these

activities a go. For some students, even the thought of getting in the

water with a wetsuit, snorkel and fins was a huge risk, though to see

their confidence grow throughout these activities was not just

encouraging, but contagious for other more hesitant students.

Our first day ended with an incredibly dynamic and unique ‘Quiz

Night’, hosted by Jason and Lisa McPhee in the Dzintari Campsite

hall. This included sing-off challenges, such as ‘Finish the Lyrics’, to

charades, to general trivia rounds. While the boys’ team have been

champions for the last few years, in 2020, the Year 8 girls took the

trophy in almost all these categories! Honourable mentions also went

to David Peacock and Mackenzie Altschwager for their outstanding

solo performances in the karaoke, song categories.

On Thursday evening, we headed off on a night walk down from the

Dzintari Campsite to Normanville Beach which was led by Mr Adrian

Siegfried, and this was another great bonding experience for our

students. Once gathered at Normanville Beach, staff and students

were able to briefly reflect on their most memorable or funny moments

from the camp so far.

In the midst of these high-energy activities facilitated by Wilderness,

students were able to have relaxed ‘free time’ before dinner each

night. It was lovely to see them connecting over basketball, footy,

soccer, a variety of boardgames and even just enjoying the beautiful

views of our campsite location. Students also helped the kitchen staff

with set-up and clean-up duties for every single meal.

On Friday, 28 February – the final morning – students very efficiently

packed up dorms, common areas and then we headed down to

Normanville Beach for the annual ‘Rusty Person’ Beach Olympic

games. It was so encouraging to see students work collectively on

various ‘Olympic’ activities, from sand sculptures to three legged

races.

We would like to say a massive thank you to staff who attended the

camp full time, supporting our students in various activities and

helping others build stronger relationships with their peers. Mr Adrian

Siegfried, Mr Josh Turko, Mr Samuel Ferguson, Mrs Andrea Field and

Ms Rebecca Hillard – thank you for the investment of your time and

energy! I would also like to thank Jason and Lisa McPhee, our

incredible student mentors, who came down for Wednesday and

Thursday to spend time with our Year 8 students. Mrs Kirsty Smith,

Ms Amanda Benger, Mrs Kirsty Rickwood, Mr Magan Schaefer, Mrs

Lani Chatfield, Mrs Elmarie Rademeyer and Mrs Mel Dixon are also to

be thanked for their contributions over the three-day camp.

Finally, I would also like to thank the Year 8 parents and guardians,

who helped encourage and support the students in attending and

making the most of this great opportunity.

What an exceptional cohort and a memorable camp for 2020!

YEAR 8 CAMP

On Friday of Week 5 the school’s student leaders for both Campuses,

Mile End and Paralowie, ventured off to Canberra for the Compass

Student Leaders Conference. Head Prefects, Evie Connew and Jake

Meinel and Deputy Head Prefects, Ruvon Roux and Zak Collingwood,

joined 140 of their peers from across Australia, to gain insight into

Christian leadership. Through sequenced sessions the insightful

speakers enlightened the students about what is means to be made in

God’s image and be a part of His story; the foundation of Christian

leadership.

The trip began with an early bird flight into Canberra, which gave us

the opportunity to do some sight-seeing, before checking into our

accommodation. Friday was spent orienting ourselves with Canberra,

with a trip to the Telstra Tower, giving us a birds-eye view of the city

and spending some time in the Canberra CBD. The conference

officially began on Saturday morning. Between the informative

sessions, and valuable discussion time, there were further chances to

see the sites. Excursions to the Australian War Memorial and

Parliament House were included in the program, with a highlight being

able to attend Question Time at Parliament House. Jake Meinel and

Zak Collingwood were also able to meet Nicolle Flint, Member for

Boothby, their electorate. A Bush Dance, in the historic Yarralumla

Woolshed, built in 1904, on Monday night was a chance for the

students to let their hair down, before the conference closed formally

on Tuesday morning.

The students really enjoyed themselves and provided the following

feedback:

“I have learnt the importance of authenticity. I am encouraged that the

best way to lead is to be my unique self, the way God has created

me.” - Evie

“Meeting and being inspired by all the students, teachers and

speakers from all over Australia.” – Jake

“Gaining a better understanding of the Trinity and how love flows fully

from one to the other.” – Ruvon

“I have learnt so much about leadership and word of God and made

many new connections.” – Zak

This conference was a great opportunity to equip the students with

the skills and strategies needed to effectively lead the school’s

student body, which will enable them to leave a positive legacy on the

Temple community. It was a privilege to share the experience with

them. Amanda Anderson

My time in Germany

Hey, I’m Toby, currently in Year 12 and doing German as one of my

subjects. Have been since Year 8 when I started at Temple. One of

the bonuses of learning German at Temple is the privilege to host a

German exchange partner and show them around Australia and some

of the things special to us Australians such as the beach and other

unique Aussie icons.

My time in Germany was at the other end of Year 11 (2019), I left on

22 November to Doha to stop over for 4 hrs to then arrive in Munich at

12pm on the 23. Jet lag wasn’t so bad when I first arrived but I found

sleeping the first couple of nights to be difficult. I really enjoyed getting

started into the school in Germany, initially everyone was very excited

to be practicing their English with me but over time I listened to the

German more and more and am now able to have a decent

conversation in German. This was one of the biggest takeaways for

me, but some other things I really enjoyed was the little things like

paying in a different currency and hearing a different language

constantly spoken around me in public. One of the biggest tests of my

German was while I was staying in Munich I walked into a café with

my camera and asked if they needed any photos done, they said yes

which was a quick little score for me. Some of the major comparison

points between Germany and Australia are some things like

population density. Travel distance for things not being anywhere near

as far as in Australia. Also having houses very differently designed (to

save space). To end off the trip we went as an Australian group up to

Berlin and had a look at

some of the attractions

there for a week. I learned

a lot, mainly to do with

German war history. Never

have I ever taken history

so seriously with how

confronting some things

like the concentration

camps are.

I found 2 months to be a

perfect amount of time. I

was starting to miss my

friends and family and

the way of life back here in Australia. I also may have come very low

with spending money... I would 100% recommend the German

Exchange for any students thinking about it as it’s a great way to

greatly improve your German but also to experience a country other

than Australia or Bali.

Students not sure about learning German as an elective subject; Just

do it ✅ Tobi Wenzel, German Student
