We have reached you once again, and we trust this, our Volume Seventeam, finds you well and in goodspirits. Though weve encountered that not all armies are here for our salvation, and some calls for help have beenheeded, but assistance has not yet materialized, yet we continue in our quest to connect to Galveston Island visitors, businesses, new locals, and our existing community of readers, as help will arrive! You hold the proof in your hands.

GWiz! Galveston Island is going through a lot of changes. Its hard to believe we will soon find our-selves two years into our islands recovery, and shes never looked better! I hope we have all considered well whatdirection we are headed and where we wish to grow. Where do Islanders want to be as a community? What dotourists want of us locals? Entertainment? Education? ...how about an edutainment guide? GWiz!

We consider that we all want peace and prosperity, but how can that be reached? Whos got the rightideas when most people can only seem to point out the wrong, dismissing viewpoints, ideas or experience before it can

sal truths and application? Do you think the current situation has created a little tension or loss?! This is where the citycompetition is either suppressed and/or attacked. The island tourism and commerce appears both boxed in or boxed outtry to elaborate more on that one soon. Our visitors, tourists, potential residents, lifelong residents, seasoned veterans aform our island community. It can change for the worse or strive to become better. I made my way from a meeting at the Stork Club with publisher Vance Reddin, which -soon relocated to Club 21 across Post Of -

ce Street. I had my mind set on later attend -ing a meet the candidates event organized

by Galveston Alliance of Island Neighbor -hoods (www.gaingalveston.org) to be held atthe Grand Opera House that same evening.

Good friend, political/socialsatirist, enter -tainer, musi -cian, airwave

    personality and

artist George Douglas Lee was MCing theevent, so I knew we were in for lively questions, commentary and criticism for the candidates. Attending the event DID help memeet the candidates, and I got a glimpse oall of the hard work that goes into endorsinga candidate, organizing a campaign, hittingthe streets with the issues, and working to getthe best representatives elected...and all youhave to do is vote! Luckily for us islanders, even those not elected into a particular position will hopefully continue as highly-active,

productive citizens working in unison to guideour island towards prosperity and peace.

I had come to Paris in the sum -1899 to write about the amazingsongwriter Candye Kane. Therest one problem, I had never seene Kane. Just then an unconscioustinean fell through the ceiling, heon joined by a dwarf dressed as a

hen something unusual happened.d a strangely familiar polyphonicne of Scotland the Brave, growingby the moment as everything else

d to fade away.I had done it again? Yup, Id

asleep while playing Moulinwith the repeat setting on. (a rath -setting for movies anyway dont

gree? Ill have to contact divxhat) So any way the phone call

om my BFF telling me to wake upt ready to go to the Candye Kanet at the Continental Club up in

wn. He made sure to remind memb my hair after showering and to

lean clothes and any shoes. Nor -this would be a rather insultingent coming from one grown manher but in his defense he is a Virgorthermore I often do forget to doort of things, especially the shoes

Later on, Id wish hed mentionedhing about bringing aspirin).

So two and a half hours later walking up to the Continental

o bask in the magic of the mag -ntly stacked (Trust me, she wontmy saying so), Bluesy, Jazzy, Cra -

generally oh so fabulous Diva e one the only Ms. Candye Kane.

I rst heard her hit song: Im

on a Bender at a drag show performanceat the Pink Dolphin here on the island(way back in da day, when it was still onthe Seawall). The performer there wasMs. Chavela; who in her own right wascompletely drag-tastic and did the songno harm at all. Once that song playedI knew I was a fan and in love. A fanof Candye Kane that is, (nothing funnyI just like talent). Wait, come to think of it, my BFF I was at this Candye Kaneshow with bore a striking resemblanceto Chavela, hmmm.

Apparently we were early, or the show was starting late or whatever,so we had a couple of dozen cocktailseach, which would be marginally funnyif It werent true. Btw, if you get a chanceto visit the Continental Club up there sayhi to the very cool although kind of scary

bartender named Squid. He makes a kick ass, well, anything you might order.

The atmosphere in the placegives you the kind of feeling you gotwhen you rst started going to bars andor night clubs. First of all it smells. Not

particularly bad, but stronglyof old booze and boozers andconcrete oors that have been

painted black over and over for years, but not too recently. You get the feeling somethingreally cool is soon going to or already has gone down in this

juke joint.Tons of pictures hung all over

the high walls behind the bar and manywere signed, by whomever had at leastone of their 15 minutes here. The pool

table in the back room occasionaly gaveme the ole stink eye and then gruntedHumph... and spat on the ground. Theshuf e board was chillin in the corner trying to still look hip

but had been here far toolong to be awkward or edgy. An upright Ms. PacMan Game in the far cor -ner was talking to herself and chain smoking a joy -stick, seemingly harmless

but you got the feelingif you made eye contact shed ask youfor change (Drugs are bad kids, Drugsare bad). Oh, and then theres the hugecourt yard out back with a big lit up elvislettering piece of artwork.

So with an ever so slight booze buzz seeping into my noggin, I looked upfrom the oor past the weaving barstooland notice that the opening act Skip Hel -ler and his band had hit the stage. Okay, lets talk about Skip. If Johnny Cash,Chris Issac and Dwight Youkum hada baby they would name him, yup you

guessed it Sue, cause Johnnywould kick their asses if theydidnt. But if Sue changedhis name and was on tour with Candye Kane he wouldchange it to Skip Heller. Thishep cat from California em -

bodies the essence of rockabil -ly or americana or maybe its just cool oldfashioned bona ed rock and roll. In hiskuffed 501s, boots and untucked Black shirt with that cool stitching on the back,

pearl buttons and all, he not only looked

the part but warmed up the crowd befor the rst song like a pro.

Now, please dont repeat this, but Skip told me in private after the sho

that he and Candye wer sort of an Item or at leastwo parts of a three par item. This made senssince He and Candye did aleast two duets and his (her, their?) band were the samwith one exception the fem-

phenom guitarist known asLaura Chavez (this is someone you denately would not want play against at guitar hero) who joined the ensemble wheCandye came on later.

Soon enough people were dancing and hootin and hollerin Houstostyle after every song Skip and his ban

performed. He gave me a CD and Ill givyou the 411 on how to get it for yourself.Top bunk stuff on there, absolutely great.

When the moment arrived thaCandye Kane took the stage, Her perfor mance was everything I expected it to be,she rocked the bar like a carpet crawinspeed freak in an poorly-balanced singlwide trailer. One comment she made that Ifound particularly funny was that she wasraised with a Drunk Father who is noa Jehovahs Witness, but she preferred thformer. When I got home I polished of a 40 oz of premium malt liquor, clicke

play on moulin rouge and passed out hoping Id meet the sparkling diamond thistime.

    Nocturnal

    Reverb

The idea began as a concept to combine our love of music with our desire to contribute into anannual musical event. We decided early on that wewould seek to help others and give back to societywith our events and productions.

Nocturnal Reverb at Meridian 2010 gave usthe opportunity to announce our style to the world, collaborating with some of Houston and Austinsgreat musical talent. We love to play and produceelectronic music, so we chose this medium. We

ooded the social networks and scene with heavy promotions, and even streamed the event live viaUstream.

We hand-selected 13 of Houstons nestDJs and producers to play great House music in a

Beats for Books fund raisingevent. We accepted book dona -tions at the door for a discounted

price and gave a percentage of the door to the Boys and GirlsClub of Greater Houston, be -cause we truly believe that chil -dren need guidance and educa-

tion the most. The evening was further enlightened with a

performance by LeRoy Peters, returning from a longoverdue hiatus from DJ-ing. LeRoy Peters is con -sidered one of the godfathers of electronic dancemusic and the after-hours scene in Houston and his

presence made the evening a shining night to remem - ber. Next time we hope to have even more lasers andlights!

The event was a great success and we were pleased with the percentage of attendees that brought books to donate. We were glad to facilitate the edu -cation of Houstons future leaders, and hearing someof Texas electronic music headliners get Nocturnalon Full Bass Maxx, was a sound for sore ears!

Special thanks to all who attended. We hopeto see you out at The Loading Dock for ACEOs up -coming Phoenix Assembly, a GWiz Bene t Eventfeaturing bands, fashion show, fajitas, merch & more! Jeremiah DiMatteoACEO Productions, Houston Texas(832)207-1278photo credits: Kristin DiMatteo

Keeping it Real... Once upon a time a very strong woodcutter asks

for a job with a timber merchant, and he got it. The pay wasreally good and so were the work conditions. For that rea-

son, the woodcutter was determined to do his best. His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where hewas supposed to work.

The rst day, the woodcutter brought 18 trees.Congratulations, the boss said. Go on that

way!Very motivated for the boss words, the woodcutter

tried harder the next day, but he only could bring 15 trees.

The third day he tried even harder, but he only could bring 10 trees. Day after day he was bringing less and less trees.

I must be losing my strength, the woodcutter thought. He went to the boss and apologized, saying that hecould not understand what was going on.

When was the last time you sharpened your axe? the boss asked.

Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut trees...(Stephen Covey, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People)

Fortunately, Ive been working. And from whatIve learned lately, many are not as fortunate. I get up, gofor a walk/run, shower, dress and go to work every day thatI can, with at least two cups of coffee in me. I work hard. Iwork late. I work on weekends. I still have a few vices but

Im working on them too.And something Ive witnessed along my wayis despair. So, I looked up the word despair and yep, Ivechanged. Galveston is changing too. Again.

Just like when I was younger and from as far back

as I can recall, Claudette, Alicia, Bonnie, Dean, Allison, toname a few, visited in succession. Trees came out of theground and houses were destroyed and our beautiful islanlooked like it had been bombed. In just a few short years everything came back to life though. Oleanders were the controversy on Broadway back then. The Seawall was boomingagain in no time, nice shops and restaurants started poppingup everywhere, seagulls became bothersome And now, the Seawall looks good, the historicaldistrict is blowing my mind, Im seeing more and more newestablishment ads printed, the west end looks fantastic, realestate is de nitely real and when my children grow up, thiswill all be a memory of how we handle the small change. Hasanyone traveled to a third world country lately? I ask becauseit lends perspective, and because weve got one so nearby. Itshould be required of every businessperson on the island.

Following the Ike clean-up, I saw a clean slate,an opportunity. Yeah so the economy is bad and all. Weredodging tar balls, tax hikes and tourism slumps. We driveover the bridge and feel the pulse of the city, of the World, and some of us move. Others stay and hope this despai

begets motivation, which begets momentum and metamor phosis - right? - So we can get on with it. Its a choice: savea way of life by letting go of some counterproductive habitsweve picked up along the way. Is it a vain hope? Do we really want to be like New Orleans, dazed and confused, half adecade after the storm and still holding out our hands?

Easy as it may sound, I dont. Id much rathesearch around in a shed for an axe sharpener. What does aaxe sharpener look like anyway? Real enough?
