He played an active role in many special golf events, including handling the wagers for the Calcutta tournament. He was again called upon to manage the resident betting for NFL Sundays and Derby Day. As an early resident, Connie devoted much of his retirement to the welfare of Herons Glen. They were not disappointed. The parade was led by the elaborately decorated cart driven by the handsome Santa and his lovely Mrs. Claus, who stepped out to greet the watchers with candy and wishes for a Merry Christmas. Following them were 27 more carts, each unique for its individual creativity. Draped in colored lights, some were topped with sparkling Christmas trees and gaily wrapped packages. Others were camouflaged as sleighs, one “pulled” by two white reindeer. Not to be outdone by Macy’s, our parade included two giant inflatables that rode proudly behind their driver. Like many special occasions, this one was over too quickly. Cruising through their final neighborhood past waving and cheering friends, it was time for the carts to head for the clubhouse. Community InterestsHearing Assist DevicesBy Karen Jessop, Herons Glen The Herons Glen Recreation District has purchased the Williams Sound Assisted Listening System. This will be available to residents with a hearing impairment to rent on a first-come, first-served basis. We have a total of four devices for rent. The system consists of a body pack receiver and earphones/neckloop. The Assisted Listening system is by Williams Sound and is model FM 457 purchased from D B Sound. Residents may choose to purchase their own system by calling D B Sound at (941) 624-4521. The system will only work if the Herons Glen soundboard is in operation and run by the Herons Glen media staff or during the concert series when the sound is produced by the sound system coming with the performers. As a resident, if you plan on reserving one of the four available devices, you would do the following: 1. Go to the HGRD Administration office prior to a performance in the ballroom. 2. You will be assigned one of the four devices. 3. Your house account will be charged $5 for each use. 4. Prior to the performance in the ballroom you will pick up your assigned listening device at the back of the ballroom. 5. You must return the body pack and earphones/neckloop immediately after the performance so it can be readied for the next user. We hope this new system will allow our hearing impaired residents the ability to enjoy concerts, plays, and meetings in the ballroom.

Stay Safe Out There! The Importance Of Strong, Unique Passwords And Two Factor AuthenticationBy Vivian Manning, Herons Glen You’ve read the stories online, in the paper, and watched on TV – online accounts hacked with stolen login credentials; money or identities stolen, causing untold havoc and loss.

The main underlying factors leading to hacked accounts are the use of simple passwords, reused over multiple accounts. The hackers break into large targets, like Google, Adobe, Yahoo, Marriot, eBay and many others, and steal login credentials stored at those sites. They then run automated scripts to apply the stolen login credentials at other sites, such as banks and email services, to try to break in to those accounts, because they know there is a high likelihood that people use the same login credentials across multiple accounts. And the hackers are often successful. The single most important step you can take to increase your online safety and to thwart the thieves is to use a different password at every online service you log into. I know what you’re thinking: I have dozens of logins! How can I remember a unique password for each one? It’s not possible! I agree, it is not possible to remember that many passwords – especially that many passwords sufficiently difficult that they are not easily guessed or cracked using cracking automated software. One way around this problem is to create a “pass phrase” rather than a password. I like to use this example: My grandmother’s favorite phrase was: “This too shall pass.” This phrase would be easy to remember, and it’s sufficiently long to make it more difficult to crack than a single dictionary word, or something like a birth date. But as a pass phrase, it still needs “help” to make it more difficult to crack. Secure pass phrases should consist of upper and lower characters, along with numbers and symbols (and no personal information such as names and dates), so a secure pass phrase could be “This2ShallPass!” and the next variation of the pass phrase could be “This2shallpass?,” and so on, changing one or more characters in a way that is easy for you to remember. I am not suggesting you use this particular pass phrase! Something that is meaningful to you will work best. Consider other information you could combine with your pass phrase, such as your first phone number (or portions of it). We almost all remember that first phone number (and it’s very unlikely it’s still in use – if it is, don’t use it!). The key is to make the pass phrase easy for you to remember, and easy for you to slightly change for each service you log into.

This one simple step will go a long way to ensuring increased security for your accounts and reduce the likelihood that a hack at one online service will make your other accounts vulnerable. Unfortunately, that is just a first step toward increasing your online security. Most online services, especially web-based email and banking institutions provide for something called two factor authentication (2FA). If the service you access has made this security enhancement available, you should take the opportunity to enable it. 2FA can sound intimidating, and, to be honest, it is a bit of an annoyance to set up. But, once set up, it is invaluable and there is one simple way to make it less intrusive and annoying. For your most important accounts, 2FA is a must. All 2FA consists of is this: Your password or pass phrase will not be enough to log into the service once 2FA is enabled. You still enter your login name and password, as usual, and then, rather than logging you in immediately, the service sends a text message to your cell phone with a six-digit code. (If you don’t have a cell phone, you can generally set up 2FA for a landline and an automated voice will send the code.) Once received, you enter the code into a box displayed on the login screen. Once you’ve entered the code, you’re in! Without the code, even the correct login credentials will not allow access to the account. (The texted code is the “second” factor so if someone steals your credentials from another service, they still won’t be able to access your bank or email account, or any other account that has 2FA turned on.) The key to making 2FA less annoying, once enabled, is to check the box on the login screen that says something along the lines of “trust this browser.” The next time you log onto the service, using your web browser on the same device, you won’t be asked for the 2FA code, you will just log in as usual with your login credentials. You will need to authorize each device that you use (and each time you get a new device, you will need to authorize it also) to access the service, but, once authorized, the initial annoyance is behind you and security remains high. No one else can access your accounts, unless they have access to your login credentials and your cell phone (or landline), and this is highly unlikely. With strong, unique passwords (that you never disclose to anyone else – no online service will ever request this information from you and you should never offer it), and 2FA turned on, you will have gone a long way toward protecting your online accounts from improper access. There are additional steps you can take, and one I highly recommend is to use a password manager, which will create nonsensical and very secure passwords for your online accounts, and the magic is – you don’t need

to remember the passwords – the password manager does it for you! You just need to remember the one super-strong and unique password you set up for your password manager, and let it do the work of logging you into your many online services. Setting up a password manager does take time and some learning, but it’s well worth it. When I set up mine up a few years ago (I use a password manager called 1Password, but there are others), I just set it up with my usual logins. After I loaded all my login information into the program (and that took quite some time) and was comfortable with the program, I started letting it reset my passwords by automatically generating new passwords according to the formula set in the program. I’m not going to pretend it wasn’t labor intensive, it was. But the work was well worth it – now I only have to remember one password, on my computer, my phone and my tablet, to open my password manager and let “it” log into all my accounts. The peace of mind, knowing that my accounts are all secured by unique and near-impossible-to-crack passwords, that I don’t have to remember, is very comforting.

The takeaways to increasing your online account login security: • Use a unique, hard to crack password for every service you log in to. • Never reuse a password. • Pass phrases are easier to remember than passwords, and longer, so generally more difficult to crack. Ensure pass phrases contain upper and lower letters, symbols, and numbers and no personally identifying information. • Never give your passwords or pass phrases to anyone who requests them – you will never be asked for that

information by any legitimate online service, and you should never offer to provide them. • Enable two factor authentication if the service offers it. Remember to check the box that allows your usual login devices to be recognized, to reduce extra login steps for these devices. • Consider the use of a password manager to store all your logins in one location and let it create secure passwords and complete your logins for you. It’s crucial to create an extra-secure password for your password manager software as it will contain all your login information!

Bell RingersBy Gwen Schaaf, Herons Glen The Alpha Gamma Delta chapter of Beta Sigma Phi started the early shift of bell ringers for the Salvation Army on Dec. 2 in front of Publix. Having fun and doing good are (left to right): Esta Doliner, Gwen Schaaf, Linda Protani and Mary Ann Moreno.

The Game ShowBy Joni Moffatt, Herons Glen Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. will feature Game Show Night in the ballroom. Do you remember the old TV game shows? Producer Denise Leclair came up with a great idea to entertain Herons Glen residents where the audience can participate in the Newlywed/Oldiewed Game, Password, Name That Tune and The Price Is Right. Jimmy Jacobs will be our host for the evening. The winners of the first three games will get another chance at The Price Is Right. So, come out and join the fun. You could win a prize! Tickets are $5 and will be sold at the ballroom entrance on the following three dates: Tuesday, Jan. 7 from 6 to 6:45 p.m.; Tuesday, Jan. 13 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.; and Thursday, Jan. 16 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to the charity of the final winner’s choice.

CongratulationsBy Anita Sharninghouse, Herons Glen One of the beautiful things about Florida and specifically Herons Glen is our landscaping. Although there are some restrictions, residents can individualize their residence with gorgeous landscaping. Many of us may not know a lot about what should be planted or how to make our yards look wonderful, but we are learning with the help of our Grounds Committee and their initiative to periodically identify homes with attractive landscaping. This initiative has been ongoing for two years. Winners are identified in the fall and in the spring. Please join us in congratulating the 2019 fall winner: Buddy and Denise Fisher, 3516 Odyssea Court. Congratulations Buddy and Denise!

14th Annual Home TourBy Susan Oliver and Karen Wills, Herons Glen Save The Date! Sunday, Feb. 23 is the date of the Herons Glen home tour sponsored by the Alpha Gamma Nu chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. This annual event provides an opportunity for residents to view lovely homes in Herons Glen, while at the same time contributing to local charities.

From the sale of home tour tickets, the sorority has made donations to the Harry Chapin Food Bank, Partners for Breast Cancer, ALS in honor of Hilde Heard, the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, Veterans of the Glen, and the After The Rain home for women. We wish to thank the Herons Glen homeowners and residents for their continued support of this event. You may purchase home tour tickets in the ballroom lobby from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3; Tuesday, Feb. 4; Wednesday, Feb. 5; and Thursday, Feb. 6. Last year’s tickets sold out in the first three days so you may want to shop early.

Pretty In Pink 2020 Kickoff!By Becky Gignac, Herons GlenPhoto by Shari Critchley The Pretty In Pink 2020 Kickoff was held on Dec. 10 at the home of Shari Critchley and Pat Sanders. Shari has graciously volunteered (or was tricked) to be the chairman for the coming event to be held on March 25. This year promises to be bigger and better with Shari at the helm. She brings a lot of new and fresh ideas. As you may or may not know, the Pretty In Pink event consists of multiple fundraising events that culminates with a women’s 18-hole scramble and beautiful luncheon honoring all cancer survivors. You do not have to be a golfer to participate. It is so much fun.

The money raised goes to the Partners for Breast Cancer Care Inc., which is a community-based nonprofit organization that funds breast screening, diagnostic testing, surgery, and treatment to uninsured low-income Lee County women and men at no cost to them. At this year’s kickoff we had a lot of return committee chairs and the tried and true fundraising committees’ events include Sign Sponsorship, Cooking for the Cure, and Raffle Baskets. Always a favorite, but may be in need of a committee, is Flamingo Flocking. Watch for some new events for 2020.

Players Of The GlenBy Linda Dental, Herons Glen The cast for Lovers and Other Strangers has been selected for the Players Of The Glen’s production in March. The Players of the Glen are pleased to announce the cast for their 2020 production of the award-winning comedy Lovers and Other Strangers. This play by Renee Taylor and Joseph Bologna is a four-scene, two-act comedy set in New York City during the early ’70s. Each scene focuses on a different couple searching for a way to deal with the complications, deceptions and commitment issues in each of their relationships. In the fi rst scene you meet Brenda, an over-the-top single woman, played by newcomer Cheryl Felt, and her romance seeking “date” Jerry, played by Dennis DeLuca. Jerry’s plans for a romantic evening take a funny twist when Brenda starts sharing her thoughts on relationships. Long-married Wilma, played by Barb Callaghan, is looking for romance in her marriage to Johnny, played by Howard Nutt in the second scene. Johnny has a different take on how things should be. In the third scene Hal and Cathy, being played by Dick Barrow and Carol Bryan, are having diffi culties with their illicit love affair. Hal tries to placate Cathy when she questions his intentions. In the fi nal scene, parents Bea and Frank, played by Rose Hansford and newcomer James Jacobs, try to counsel their son Richey, played by newcomer Bob Agate and his wife Joan, played by Laura Steil on marriage and happiness. Each scene will make you laugh and will touch your heart as you watch each couple struggle through their problems. Director Trish Perry would like to thank all those who came to audition for the show. She was very impressed with the number of talented people living in the Glen. The show will take place on March 20, 21 and 22 in our ballroom. Watch for announcements on ticket sale dates.

Quilters Display At The Show By Dianne Kline, Herons Glen There are so many activities in Herons Glen including a group for quilters. We meet in the clubhouse on Wednesday and Thursday beginning around 9 a.m. Anyone interested in joining us is welcome, no fees involved. We make quilts for family, friends, Golisano Children’s Hospital, hospice, nursing homes and multiple other charitable organizations. Most of our Herons Glen quilters belong to one or more larger guilds as well. The Southwest Florida Quilters Guild meets monthly at North Fort Myers Recreation Center. This larger guild will be having our biannual quilt show on Feb. 7 and 8 at the Lee County Civic Center on the corner of Bayshore and Route 31. The theme this year is “What’s Old is New Again.” Many of our Herons Glen quilters have quilts on display in the show. There will be about 275 quilts. We also have a memorial display in the show. This shows the work and honors the lives of our angel members, who are members that have died since the last show. Two of our angel members were Herons Glen quilters Dolores Travers and Sandra Gressley. They will be missed by all of us and remembered fondly. Favorites at the show, in addition to quilts on display, include many vendors, a silent auction, raffl e baskets, a boutique and of course food. You will see Herons Glen residents working there, come and join us; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. You will see beautiful quilts and many tired but happy quilters you will recognize. Come one, come all.

Socialites Celebrate The Season Island StyleBy Pam Scheid, Herons Glen The December meeting of the Socialites, held in the festively decorated ballroom, was all about luncheon with friends and music. President Karlyn Gies welcomed members and guests and wished them all the joys of the season. Although much of the usual business meeting was waived to allow extra time for the program, Nancy Lyons announced the Angel Tree gifts had been delivered, and Bev

Groft reported the member contribution to the All Souls food bank totaled $404. Following the meal, Martie Shea introduced Christina Moffett, the director of music at the North Fort Myers Academy of the Arts. The Socialites organization is a patron of the academy, and for several years they have entertained the Socialites at Christmastime. This year they sent their 20-member steel drum ensemble. The performance by these talented middle school musicians fi lled the ballroom with a lively Caribbean version of familiar songs and Christmas carols. Caught up in the fun, members joined in for Tequila, and those who remembered how did the Macarena. Even some of the staff found the music irresistible, dancing among the tables as they served dessert. Learning to play the steel drum is an extra-curricular activity for these students, who are also accomplished on other instruments. Appreciating that bringing their drums to the Glen was no small feat, the Socialites thoroughly enjoyed this unique and delightful program.

Bears For CopsBy Gwen Schaaf, Herons Glen Alpha Gamma Delta (AGD) chapter of the International Women’s Sorority, Beta Sigma Phi, s u p p o r t s m a n y charities. Two of the charities were evidenced at i t s November meeting. Charlene Kohut collected stuffed toys to give to the Fort Myers Police Department for their “Bears for Cops” program. The police carry them in their patrol cars to give to children who were involved in car accidents or domestic abuse cases. Another charitable activity is headed by Sharon Pedersen. She is in charge of taking books to Faith Academy on Bayshore Road. Periodically, some members of AGD arrange to attend Faith Academy to read to the children.

Travel Club Annual Christmas DinnerBy Jim Gormley, Herons Glen On Dec. 12, 74 member s o f t he Travel Club, dressed up in their holiday finery, enjoyed the annual Christmas Dinner. The event was he ld in the ballroom, which was decorated for the season. The guests feasted on entrees of either steak, salmon or turkey followed by either pecan or pumpkin pie. The evening began with a champagne toast, and during the meal we were serenaded by Michael Moore-Kelley on the keyboard. After dinner two of Santa’s elves (Kathy Hollander and Rosie Swisher) passed out gifts of Herons Glen “LED Lanterns.” The evening closed with door prizes of poinsettias to three lucky winners. The next meeting of the Travel Club will be Thursday, Jan. 9 at 3 p.m. in card room “C”, where Jim and Carol Commodore will give a presentation on “Taiwan and the Far East.”

February 13 - April 4

Dec. 29, 2019 - Feb. 8, 2020Based in Minnesota, the musical adaptation of the popular 1993 Warner Bros. fi lm tells the laugh-out-loud story of family, friendship, love and romance. Grumpy Old Men centers around neighbors, Max and John, two grumpy retirees whose verbal, and sometimes physical, altercations date back to their

high school days. The rivalry reaches its peak when the beautiful, eccentric, and charming Ariel moves into the neighborhood. Chaos and laughter ensue as deep-rooted feuds are reopened, but with the help of Ariel’s love and compassion, Max and John have a chance to be re-united in friendship.

Based on true happenings, this heartwarming story tells of Charlie, a factory owner struggling to save his shoe business and Lola, a fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos. The two have seemingly nothing in common, but with a little compassion and a lot of understanding, this unlikely duo learns to embrace

their differences and fi nd they have more in common than they think! Featuring original songs by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, this high-energy, full-hearted hit is inspiring audiences to let love shine and showing them that sometimes the best way to fi t in is to stand out!

By Terry Rosen, Herons Glen On Dec. 7 for two hours our ballroom exploded with happy faces as mothers and their children enjoyed a special Christmas party hosted by Alpha Delta Mu. All of our guests belonged to an organization called “A Mom’s Helping Hand.” They are single moms doing their best building strong and stable lives through resources, training, and education. Our organization, Alpha Delta Mu, has been giving them a helping hand monthly and this party was our gift to them for the holidays. Music and entertainment were lovingly supplied by Tom Foster, a man full of talent and heart. We laughed as we danced to the Chicken Dance, The Hokey Pokey, and other Christmas music. Rick Lindquist lovingly fulfilled the role of Santa as he presented the 44 gifts we bought for the children. We also presented gifts to the moms; no one should be left out. A special thanks to our Executive Chef, Jason Miller,

By James Jacobs, Herons Glen Yes, we were back again, raising our voices in song and bringing good cheer to our neighbors in need of some “spirit lifting.” Judging by their reactions, we were successful! This year, the group consisted of Clara Longo, Barb and Don Vanover, Marla and Rich Pierce, Judy Smith, Suzanne Flynn, Debbie Bickett, Nancy Piscioneri, Sue Perkins, Gerry Lecavalier, Danielle Lecavalier, Denise and Paul Leclair, Diana Tallman, Mary and Jerry Kulyk, Jim and Beth Burnett, Lesley-Ann Penney, Anne Marie Dooley, Pam Reed, Debra Gluszczak, Debra and Warren Camp, Sally and Ron Uffens, Jimmy Jacobs, Abigail Jacobs (my boss) and Joy Kenyon Venker (the big boss!). Our gratitude to all of you. It is very rewarding to see all those who took the time during the holidays to join us in our attempt to spread the spirit of Christmas. And thanks to all the folks who took the time to listen to our occasionally off-key caroling, while still smiling, sometimes between tears.

What A Wonderful Feeling! What A Wonderful Time!who bent over backwards to fill our stomachs with delicious pizzas. He made many concessions to make today possible. The ladies who helped were Barbara St. Germain, Trish

Chesnov, Pat Sabo, Joan Darcy, Diane Signal, Rosemary Lind, Jane Flynn, Mary Porter, Linda Ryan, Diana Tallman and Terry Rosen.

Joyful Voices This is the essence of the Herons Glen community. We are caring; we are friends; we are family! From all of the choir: Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, and

Happy New Year! P.S. Canadians can really sing. Who knew?
