May turned out to be a great

month. This was the first time

I attended the NYS AOH meet-

ing in East Durham. Before

the meeting Jim Burke, Ed McGlade

and John Hillin joined me at the annual

Austin Carew golf outing which supports

a scholarship for college bound high

school seniors. These applications are

due in the month of May so be aware of

this opportunity for 2016.

We are beginning our Road to

2016 and the 100 year commemoration

of the Rising of Irish Freedom. Like our

own American Bicentenial in 1976 we

intend to celebrate all year long. The

theme for us is education. A limited num-

ber of commerative coins will be issued

by the NYS AOH and will fund our educa-

tional activities. More to come on that.

What a great day we had for Me-

morial Day! The parade was very well

attended, and I thank all the men and

women who were there. The AOH/Marine

BBQ couldn’t have been better. This was

the first year we had a gas grill and from

the comments I heard, everyone thought

the hamburgers and the franks were pret-

ty good. The Marines stepped up and

did a good bit of the cooking. I think it

was all part of the grand strategy to

help them win the stickball game.

Irish Night our next big event is

coming up on June 27 at Brady Park. We

will need some volunteers to help set

up and man the various tables. Setup

begins at 2 pm at the hall. The evening

will kick off at 6 pm and end at 10

pm. Our entertainment includes The Ed

Ryan Band, InnishFree Irish dancers and

our Tara Pipes and Drums including the

color guard. If you have never attend

"Irish Night", do yourself a favor and

come on out with your family and

friends.

We are saddened at the recent

passing of Bill Laws wife Betty. Please

remember in your prayers all are mem-

bers who are ill.

See you down at the hall. God Bless!

A few things for you to keep in mind. The band will be playing at Irish Night in Brady Park on June 27th, please come down and support us. We are starting sum-mer classes - for both pipes and drums so please come down and join us. Just come to the hall any Thursday at 7pm and we will get you started - it is a very easy thing for us to do. The band has selected November 7th as the date it will hold it’s next Piper’s Ball. This will be the kickoff event for the celebration of the band’s 40th anniversary year. The band was formed in 1976, and we are stronger than ever and are looking forward to a great year in 2016. Please come down and celebrate with us. The band returned to the Massapequa—

Massapequa Park Memorial Day parade, we turned down a number of other offers so that we could once again march for the division. We had a great time marching thru town and seeing all the folks lined up. We hope we can once again do it again next year. Thanks it for now - have a lot of new music to learn and a golf outing to prepare for… The golf out will be $150 per person and held on June 22. The course is WindWatch and lunch/dinner afterwards will be at the hall. If you are interested in just attending the dinner, which starts at 2pm, the cost is $50 - please let John Hillin, Kevin O’Rourke or myself know. Ed McGlade, BandMaster

Memorial Day has come and

gone I guess we are now officially in the

summer season .Break out the white

shoes and straw hats. This year Memori-

al Day is something special because the

Band and Color guard is losing its senior

member. After 35 years, Frank (The

Deek) Flood is retiring. It won’t be the

same without him. As Frank was always

good for a few laughs, he was always

forgetting some part of his uniform.

Would you believe one time he even for-

got his kilt. Frank, the Color Guard and

Band is going to miss you.

The Division participated in the

Massapequa Parade on Memorial Day.

Thanks to all those that found the time to

march. We had about 18 men marching

for the Division. Where were the other

220? I wonder why people join an organ-

ization if they are not going to support it.

So much for that I had my say.

For the 25th year we shared a

day with the Marines at their Annual

Barbeque. The weather was great , food

was plentiful and a good time was had by

all. Sad to say we did not fare to well in

our annual stickball game as the future

Marines (14 years and younger) beat us

9 to 2 . A good time was had by all.

That’s about it for now see you at

our next meeting, Wednesday, June

10th.

The Club is opened every Friday

at 8 pm, come down and met your few

brothers and sister Hibernians. Last

month we bet on the Kentucky Derby and

also the Preakness. This month it will be

the Belmont stakes come and get your bet

in at the hall.

Last month’s winner of the

Maintenance Fund was Maureen Caffrey ,

she walked home with $90.00. For those

that don’t know what the fund is about, I

will explain it. We have a jar in the hall. If

you want to participate in it, you sign your

name to a $5.00 bill and put it in the jar,

on the last Friday of the month we pick

one of the bills out and whose name is on

it gets ½ of the pot. The other half goes

towards the maintenance of the building.

Now, we have $890.00,after I paid a

$1300 plumbing bill.

At our next meeting on Wednes-

day, June10 we will be having an election

for Green Beret Trustees. Anyone inter-

ested in running contact Ed Mc Glade.

That’s it for this month. Hope to see you at

the meeting.

“ORDINARY T IME “- The name given to the part of the Liturgical Year that does not fall within one of the major seasons (Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter). If one re-flects on the past five months we can recall that most of us have been looking forward to some warm weather as we have experienced a long-bitter Winter and a below average temperature Spring. In terms of weather, we have experienced something “out of the ordinary”! From a liturgical viewpoint, our experiences are quite different – Christmas, followed by Lent , Easter and just recently we celebrated the birthday of the Church with the great feast of Pentecost. And now we continue with “ORDINARY TIME” – the time between Pentecost and Advent and what is so ordinary about this period.

From a secular viewpoint, “ordinary time” is really the best part of the year where we can experience the extra-

ordinary things of life such as: Backyard barbeques; ball-games; the beach; gardening; vacation time, etc..

From a ‘religious’ viewpoint “ordinary time” can be consid-ered as a little weekly Easter just as Easter is a great annual Sunday. Sunday is thus the day on which we cele-brate the victory of Jesus through His Cross. With great joy and faith we can celebrate the deed of the Resurrec-tion, and at the same time Jesus gathers us around Him, present among His own, who have come together to listen to His Word and celebrate His Eucharist. Each Sunday, during “ordinary time” is thus a “feast” , a period of growth in the Faith for all who follow the Liturgy. It is He who makes of our seemingly ordinary lives an eternal offering to the glory of God!

Enjoy this coming Summer and “ORDINARY TIME”!

Did You Know An bhfuil fhios agat:

Set in the heart of Connemara, Co. Galway, Kylemore Abbey shares its wood-lands, lakes and rivers with a large variety of birds and animals. A trip to the West of Ireland is not complete without experiencing the scenic lands and cultures of the Catholic faith, beauty and tranquility of Kylemore Abbey and Gardens.

Kylemore Abbey, has been home to the Irish Benedictine nuns since 1920. The Benedictine nuns bought the house in 1920, having fled their convent in war-torn Belgium in 1914, where they ran a boarding school for girls for over 300 years. They re-established the school here and it is still very much alive today.

The Abbey was originally built in 1868 by Mitchell Henry, in memory of his late wife Margaret. Its architecture is best described as neo-gothic and the house still dis-plays all the characteristics of that period. Kylemore Abbey's most famous feature is its miniature cathedral, known locally as the Gothic church. It was built by Mitch-ell Henry in 1870. Its marble columns add to the design's richness. The castle was designed by James Franklin Fuller. Construction first began in 1867, and took one hundred men four years to complete. The castle covered approximately 40,000 square feet and had over seventy rooms with a principal wall that was two to three feet thick. The facade measures 142 feet in width and is made of granite brought from Dalkey, Co. Dublin by sea to Letterfrack and from limestone brought from Ballinasloe. There were 33 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, 4 sitting rooms, a ballroom, billiard room, library, study, school room, smoking room, gun room and various offices and domestic staff residences for the butler, cook, housekeeper and other

servants. Other buildings include a Gothic cathedral and family mausoleum containing the bodies of Margaret Henry, Mitchell Henry and a great grand-nephew.

The Abbey remained in Henry's estate after he returned to England. The castle was then sold to the Duke and Duch-ess of Manchester in 1909, who resided there for some years before being forced to sell the house and grounds be-cause of their gambling debts.

In 1920 the Irish Benedictine Nuns purchased the Abbey castle and lands after they were forced to flee Ypres, Bel-gium during World War I. The nuns, who had been based in Ypres for several hundred years, had been bombed out of their Abbey during World War I. The nuns continued to offer education to Catholic girls, opening an international boarding school and establishing a day school for local girls. They were forced to close the school in June 2010.

Since the 1970s the walled Victorian Gardens have been open for public tours and 'nature' walks. The Benedictine community has restored the Abbey's gardens and Cathedral with donations and local artisans in order to be a self-sustaining estate. Mise Eire.

CONGRATULATIONS, CONDOLENCES & PRAYERS

Summer is finally upon us and the warm weather events will

ensue. We had a wonderful time yesterday celebrating Memori-

al Day with a parade, followed by a beautiful ceremony and of

course a BBQ with our friends at the Marine Hall. And as much

fun was had by all, it is important to remember the reason we

are able to celebrate with family and friends. We honor the men

and woman who have made the ultimate sacrifice and their

family members who will forever miss them. We also honor

those who survived and whose lives were forever changed. Our

veterans need us now more than ever.

Yours in Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity,

Joanne
